Mumbai saw a massive dust storm accompanied by heavy rain causing several casualties across the city on Monday. Amid the adverse weather, a stampede-like situation erupted on Mumbai local trains.

A video of a large number of commuters trying to get onto a local train is doing rounds on the internet. The visual shows commuters pushing each other, hanging on the train’s door attempting to board the train as two commuters fall into the heavy crowd.

Sharing the video on X, a user wrote, “#Mumbai local train services adversely affected after the city received heavy rainfall accompanied by a massive dust storm. Stampede like situation at #Thane station.”

The video grabbed the attention of other social media users. One of them commented, “First day, first show of monsoon and they were not ready. Railways need to gear up for predicted heavy monsoon this year.” Another user wrote, “People are treated worse than animals in this country.”

Meanwhile, eight people were killed and 74 injured after a giant hoarding collapsed in Ghatkopar’s Pant Nagar locality as gust wind and rain hit the city. The hoarding measured 120×120 feet as against the permitted size of 40×40 feet.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde visited the site and announced ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh for the kin of the deceased. The National Disaster Response Force conducted rescue operations at the collapse site.

According to the India Meteorological Department, rainfall activity is unlikely to continue on Tuesday and Mumbai is in for hot and humid conditions on Wednesday. A heatwave alert has been issued for Thane and Palghar districts for Tuesday.
