As Mumbai continues to receive intense rainfall exceeding 300 mm, several videos – from submerged vehicles to commuters wading through waterlogged roads – emerged on social media.
One such video on July 8 shows a local train passing through heavily waterlogged railway tracks as passengers at the doorsteps keenly look at the scale of inundation outside with the rail track remaining invisible.
Sharing the video, an X handle @GodmanChikna wrote, “They did a collab between Railways and Waterways”.

Netizens reacted with a tinge of humour captioning it ‘Inauguration of Water Metro’ or as ‘Vande waters… world’s first Amphibious train technology’. One person termed it “a rare technical innovation where we left behind China and Japan also, driving train over water. Every year our train switch to amphibious mode in rains.”
Another user reacted. “When you pay for a train ticket (maybe not), and you get a water ride for free.”
Waterlogging in Mumbai has caused disruption of suburban train services in low-lying areas.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for Mumbai as rainfall continued on Tuesday. Western Railways updated commuters on minor delays. According to reports, Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer, CR, said trains on the main line are running on the slow line in both directions at a restricted speed limit. Nila said the water level on the tracks at Bhandup is currently 4 inches, leading to the slow speed of trains.
