More than 40 crore devotees are estimated to take a holy dip at the Sangam––the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati river––at the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. As the world’s largest religious event continues to attract devotees, an advertisement offering a “dip from home” has grabbed the Internet’s attention.
The ad requests a photo, along with a payment of Rs 500, from devotees who want to experience the holy dip without travelling to Prayagraj. “A once in 144 years opportunity! This is your last chance for the divine Mahakumbh snan. Don’t miss it. Send us your photo, whatsapp We’ll take a photocopy of your photo & we’ll take a dip in the holy waters with your photo. Benefits of this: Cleanse your soul, you will receive divine blessings & your ancestors will bless you for taking a dip in the Mahakumbh. This moment won’t come again in your lifetime. The viral ad amassed over 40,000 views, prompting reactions from social media users. “Land of opportunity,” a user wrote. “Creativity overflowing,” another user commented. “This idea should not go outside India,” a third user said.
Meanwhile, at least 18 people were killed in a stampede at the New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday evening amid the Mahakumbh rush. On January 29, 30 people were killed and 60 were injured after a stampede broke out at the Mahakumbh Mela on the Mauni Amavasya.
Mahakumbh Mela commenced on January 13 and will conclude on February 26.
