It’s been 13 years since India defeated Sri Lanka by six wickets at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai to win the prestigious World Cup 2011 on April 2, 2011. After the win, the Indian cricket team lifted legendary Sachin Tendulkar on their shoulder as a tribute to his contributions.
The World Cup 2011 marked several firsts including the first time in World Cup history that two Asian teams appeared in the final and the first time since the 1992 World Cup that the final match did not feature Australia. The final between India and Sri Lanka also saw stunning performances by Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir, and Zaheer Khan.
Celebrating 13 years of India’s World Cup 2011 win, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took to X and shared a photograph featuring Team India as Champions. “Throwback to a very special day! #OnThisDay in 2011, #TeamIndia won the ODI World Cup for the second time,” BCCI wrote.
Cricket enthusiasts also took to the platform and relived the moment when team India lifted the World Cup 2011 trophy. A user wrote, “April 2nd, 2011 – a moment etched in history, forever giving me goosebumps! India clinches the ICC Cricket World Cup. With 33k voices at Wankhede united in singing ‘Ma Tujhe Salaam’.”
Another fan shared a series of celebratory photos featuring M S Dhoni, Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and others. “Dhoniiiii finishes off in style. A magnificent strike into the crowd. India lift the World Cup after 28 years. The party starts in the dressing room and it’s an Indian captain who’s been absolutely magnificent on the night of the final.” The day we never Forget!!” he wrote.
