Sri Lankan rapper Maya Arulpragasam, better known by the moniker M.I.A,has stirred controversy with her new video which has been banned by Youtube for it’s violent content.

The singer who performed at last year’s Grammies just days prior to giving birth to her son,was mad after learning that her new video for the single ‘Born Free’ is banned from the website.

Directed by Romain Gavras, the video follows a group of US soldiers who invade a town and hunt down readheads to be massacred in the desert.

The 34-year-old artiste who often grabs headlines for her overt support to the Tamil cause in Sri Lanka blasted Universal Music Group on Twitter, but later pulled back her statement after realising that the ban was not engineered by them.

“Born Free” has been embraced by her devotees since earlier this month. It is expected to appear in M.I.A.’s forthcoming third studio album which is yet to be titled.
