YouTube, the world’s most popular video streaming platform, is now testing a new premium lite subscription with fewer ads at half the price of the full-fledged premium subscription.
According to a post on Threads by a user named jonahmanzano, YouTube Premium Lite costs $8.99 a month, almost 50 per cent cheaper than the regular premium plan priced at $16.99. However, there is no confirmation if YouTube Premium Lite will also be available as an annual subscription plan.
As of now, there is no information on whether the YouTube Premium Lite subscription will be available in India. While the regular premium plan costs Rs 149 a month, YouTube Premium Lite may cost around Rs 75 if it is launched in the country.
Considering the recent price hike in the YouTube premium subscription, YouTube premium lite subscription will display fewer ads. According to a report by The Verge, YouTube is currently testing this subscription in select markets like Germany, Thailand, and Australia.
According to the official comparison chart, YouTube Premium Lite will offer an ad-free user experience on most videos, but users will see some ads in music content and short videos. However, YouTube Premium Lite subscribers will miss benefits like ad-free streaming on YouTube Music, offline downloads, and background play.
YouTube started testing the Premium Lite subscription in 2021 for the European market, however, the service was discontinued before the official rollout.
