Extended/mixed-reality is often touted as the next big thing and it’s no wonder tech companies are pouring millions into their development. Samsung is also set to join the fray with its own XR headset that would run a new variant of Android. Now thanks to Chinese news outlet Gyro Technology, we have our first look at a prototype of the headset.
The prototype has a sleek visor design that resembles Quest 3, but uses thinner and lighter pancake lenses instead of fresnel lenses. It also has four cameras for tracking, two cameras for color passthrough, and a depth sensor for environmental awareness and hand tracking.
The device is powered by Samsung’s Exynos 2200 chip from 2022, which is superior to Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2 Gen 1 used in Quest 2 and Pico 4, but inferior to the XR2 Gen 2 expected to launch in Quest 3 later this year. It also uses OLED microdisplays, which offer better resolution and contrast than LCD screens.
The most intriguing aspect of the device is that it apparently does not have any tracked controllers, relying solely on hand tracking and eye tracking for interaction just like the Apple Vision Pro.
According to the report, Samsung is planning to improve the specs and design of the device after seeing the announcement of Apple Vision Pro, which boasts the M2 and R1 chips, dual near-4K microdisplays, LiDAR, face tracking, and a custom aluminum alloy frame with a curved glass front plate. The report also says that Samsung will price its device between Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro, ranging from $1000 to $2000.
Apple Vision Pro is currently seen as a one-of-a-kind product with no competitors in the segment thanks to its special features and its price tag. But Samsung’s upcoming XR is shaping up to be a worthy competitor, if these specifications are to be believed.
