Amazon’s Fire TV lineup has been running on Fire OS, an operating system the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). In the last few months, rumour had it that the tech giant would soon be launching new Fire TVs powered by Vega OS, its in-house developed operating system.

Now, in a blog post, Amazon has officially announced Vega OS. While the company is yet to share details, in a blog post, it did say that the new operating system will be “responsive and highly efficient.”

Also, unlike Fire OS, which had Android at its core, Vega OS is based on Linux and is built using React Native, the popular JavaScript-based framework that makes it easy for developers to build new applications. However, Amazon still seems to be struggling to bring app developers on board.

The first device that will come with Vega OS out of the box is the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, which was launched last week. In case you are wondering, the upcoming streaming stick supports 4K and comes with HDR10+ support. Amazon also unveiled a new Cloud App program, which makes it easy for developers to port apps from Android to the new operating system. The company says it will also cover the cost associated with the cloud streaming service for nine months.

However, unlike Fire OS, Vega OS does not support sideloading of apps and only allows users to install apps from the Amazon Appstore. Amazon has also promised support for game streaming services like Xbox Gaming and Luna. And while the company plans to launch new products with Vega OS out of the box, older devices that still run on Android-powered Fire OS will be supported.
