WhatsApp, the popular instant messaging app will soon get a new Snapchat-like feature that allows users on the platform to send short video messages to their friends, family and colleagues.
According to a report by WABetainfo, WhatsApp developers are currently testing the new feature on the beta version of the app. Currently available on the beta version of the app, the ability to record and send video messages is expected to make its way to all users in the coming weeks.
Similar to how you send voice notes in the app, the new feature requires users to tap on the microphone button that resides on the right side of the text input box. If you are on the beta version of the app, the microphone button will turn to a video button, pressing on which will let you record a video message with a maximum length of 60 seconds.
The functionality can come in handy if you want to share something with your friends without leaving the app and recording video from the phone’s camera app. Just like text and audio messages, videos sent using the upcoming feature will be end-to-end encrypted. Also, it is currently not possible to forward video messages to other people, but they can be saved using screen recording applications since WhatsApp does not treat them as disappearing messages.
