Instagram, the popular photo and video-sharing platform among the youth, is also known for its direct messaging (DM) features. With the latest release, Instagram DMs have gained three new capabilities, which make connecting with fellow Instagram users a lot more fun and engaging.

Users can now assign nicknames to their friends, which will only be visible in the DM window, and the nicknames can include text, numbers, and emojis. Similarly, Instagram has also introduced new stickers, similar to WhatsApp stickers, to help users express their emotions without text. Lastly, Instagram users can now share their live location with fellow users.

Temporary location sharing is available for both personal and group messages. However, note that this feature is disabled by default, and one needs to manually enable it. This feature is also currently limited to select countries and is available in India. Unlike sharing live locations on WhatsApp, live locations on Instagram DM will automatically expire after one hour. When one shares a live location, there will be a live indication at the top of the chat.

As for the nicknaming capabilities, there is an option for users to prevent their friends from changing their nicknames and can control who can assign nicknames. Regarding the stickers, Instagram has added over 17 different sticker packs.
