American Tommy Paul won his first round match at French Open. But it was some intense emotional drama back home in Florida that brought him a lot of joy.
Seeded 12th at Roland Garros, Tommy’s truck was repossessed by authorities in Florida after he accidentally missed three payments. On a day that he battled rain and sunshine alternating at Court Simonne-Mathieu to beat Elmer Moller of Denmark 6-7 (5), 6-2, 6-3, 6-1, there was more than a set deficit he came back from.
ESPN reported that the 2023 Australian Open semifinalist’s truck was taken over while he played the semifinals at the Italian Open earlier this month. Typically for an American, the shenanigans resulted from changing banks and forgetting to properly adjust the automatic payments for his Ford F-150.
“I missed I think it was like three payments,” Tommy was quoted as saying by ESPN. “They came and took it. I didn’t know it happened like that. I didn’t know how quick they would come and grab it — like in the middle of the night. Now I’m watching all these repo shows, where they come in and swoop trucks at 1 in the morning. It’s definitely a funny experience. To be in Europe while it happened is even crazier. But we did get it back,” he said.
Tommy was asked by his trainer — who was back in Florida — to check his security camera footage, for routine delivery packages and inform him if they needed to be picked.
“There were no packages — and no truck!” he told the press in high pitched American tone of flabbergast on Sunday. The New Jersey born then went through his whole video footage. “I’m like, ‘What the hell is going on? There’s a tow truck coming and taking my car!’ I thought it was stolen at first,” he was quoted by ESPN and Associated Press.
Turning it into a reel he took to social media and posted the black-and-white footage of his property being towed away from his driveway. It was slow mo truck tow to the soundtrack of Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On.”
