‘Very difficult day at the office’: Jannik Sinner plays 4 points despite stadium fire alarm going off

Sinner's evening match had already been delayed, because the previous game between Taylor Fritz and Lorenzo Sonego faced a 75-minute delay when the venue lost power.

World No. 1 Jannik Sinner won a dramatic third-round clash against Gabriel Diallo at the Cincinnati Open, playing four points of the match with the stadium’s fire alarm going off. While Sinner won the match with a 6-2, 7-6(6) scoreline, he had to save a set point before securing his victory. The club’s grandstand has stood since 1899. The ATP report noted that both players agreed to play through the grating noise of the siren and the lights flashing.

“It was a very difficult day at the office. He was serving very well, especially in the second set… If you don’t play well in tough situations like this you can lose these matches,” Sinner said.

Sinner’s evening match had already been delayed, because the previous game between Taylor Fritz and Lorenzo Sonego faced a 75-minute delay when the venue lost power.

Thanks to the victory, Sinner is now on a 22-match hard-court winning streak, a run of results that started after he lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the Beijing Open final in October. The victory over Diallo also helped him improve his record to 46-0 against players who are ranked outside the Top 20 on hard courts since losing to World No 66 Dusan Lajovic at this tournament two years ago.
