IPL 2023 LSG vs PBKS Highlights: Shahrukh Khan-Sikandar Raza take Punjab home in a two wicket win

Shahrukh Khan has struggled against leg spin and on comes Ravi Bishnoi. Glides the ball down the leg for the first two deliveries, inducing a caught behind appeal as well but nothing comes. SRK goes for the sweep off the third but survives an incoming catch from deep mid wicket. 

Sikandar Raza has pressure on his shoulders to finish the over but is only able to locate fielder on the fence with a pull. Seven down for 139.

Just when Punjab looked to have the upper hand, Lucknow induce a close run out call. Third umpire to review this. Touch and go from the second-umpire's angle. Split screen shows Raza's home.

The Zimbabwe batter finishes the over with a drilled shot through covers for four. 137/6 after 17 overs.

Mark Wood has been breathing fire in this over. A wicket off that last ball but Shahrukh Khan doesn't care. Full, in the slot and he picks the English quick down long on for a six. 13 off the over. 128/6 after 16 overs. 32 needed off the last 24 deliveries.

Mark Wood for his third. 144.3 kph, short, on the body and Sikandar Raza swivels across to pull the ball clear of fine leg. Wood has only gone short to the Zimbabwe international this game. A single and that brings up his fifty, a first in the IPL.

Meanwhile, KL Rahul takes a banger diving catch at mid off to dismiss Jitesh Sharma. Quick and length from Wood and Sharma drives it but what a dive to his left from the Lucknow captain! Punjab lose a sixth wicket.

An over later, Ravi Bishnoi has arrived and has made the almost instant impact. After being smoked for a four by the stand-in Punjab captain, the leggie removes Sam Curran. Looking for another boundary, finds Krunal Pandya at long-off. 115/5, Punjab after 15 overs.

That's the question being asked of the Lucknow thing tank. "There cannot be confusion with someone in the purple cap race," remarks Eoin Morgan. Meanwhile, Sikandar Raza finds another boundary and 100s up for Punjab, 108/4 after 14 overs.

"Come on boys, let somebody else play," laughed Graeme Swann. "He's teasing him," went Eoin Morgan. The comm box could barely hold its laugh as Sikandar Raza went after the short boundary and Yudhvir Singh at deep mid wicket. Back to back sixes that got the fielder's hand on the ball but went over the rope. A four which was towards wide long on, just about clear of the quick's reach. 17 come off that over. 99/4 after 13 overs.

Sikandar Raza takes the aerial route off Krishnappa Gowtham and a first six for Punjab in six overs. Close enough to the pitch of the delivery and he lofts it over long off. Seven off the over, despite that maximum. 82/4 after 12 overs.

Sriram Veera: Nearly 11 years after he last played an IPL game (10 years, 332 days), Harpreet Singh Bhatia has made his comeback in IPL. In fact, by his telling, he might have got into IPL in 2017, but a case of mistaken identity ensured he wasn’t picked in the auction. On the morning of the auction, a news agency had wrongly reported that Harpreet was arrested and granted bail for driving his car on to the platform of a suburban railway station in Mumbai. The offender was the left-arm spinner but apparently it was misconstrued to be Bhatia. 

“I am getting calls from everyone asking what have you done. I was hoping to be picked up at the IPL auction… When my name came, the franchises must have felt why take a player who is in police custody,” he had said then. He was the highest rungetter in the T20 Syed Mushtaq Ali tournament, then.

On Saturday night, he finally got his chance, and was anchoring the chase rather neatly on a tricky pitch before he heaved Krunal Pandya to long-leg after making 22.

Raza and Harpreet had their backs against the walls with a rising required rate and the latter goes for a pull off Pandya but locates Yudhvir Singh behind square on the on side. Punjab four down for 75. 

Spin from the other end as well. Both the innings have seen a whole lot of shuffling in the bowling owing to the two-paced, uneven bounce/turning surface. Halfway through the innings, Punjab Kings are 68/3. Sikandar Raza (11 off 13) and Harpreet Singh (17 off 18) in the middle. 

"He's just keeping the pressure on the opposition. Ready with the ball."

England captain Eoin Morgan noted a Ravindra Jadeja-like urgency in Krunal Pandya's first over to further pin the pressure on Punjab. Meanwhile, Harpreet Singh would amass a boundary using the pace of the ball to dab it behind short third for four. Eight off the over. 61/3 after nine.

Mark Wood back for his second over, keeps pressure on a wounded Punjab batting order that already seems to be missing their captain and top run-scorer, who tied their first three innings together this season. Chasing a 160, Shikhar Dhawan the sheet anchor would've been handy, especially against a heavy arsenal Lucknow pace attack. Just the five runs off his eighth. 53/3.

Avesh Khan back into the attack after getting bashed in his first over, by the batter as well as his captain, who had a mouthful for his young pacer served a short one to Short. Makes a brilliant comeback in this one. Just three off it. Pressure on Punjab. 48/3 after seven overs.

Krishnappa Gowtham to close the powerplay. Comes round the wicket. Matthew Short picks him for a slog down long on for six. The offie, goes wide and length against the Aussie. A half hearted shot to clear mid off but it lands straight to Marcus Stoinis. 45/1 after six overs.

Yudhvir Singh Charak into his third over after nabbing two wickets off his first two. Matthew Short had accumulated quickfire boundaries in Punjab's last game as well after early wickets and he decides to go after the 25-year-old. Short ball to start and a pull over mid-wicket for four. Goes wide off the next one and is slashed square past cover for another. Nine off the first three, none off the final. 37/2 after five overs.

Sriram Veera: In 2021, Mumbai Indians had uploaded a lovely video involving Zaheer Khan and Yudhvir Singh Charak, who used to be with Mumbai back then. Zaheer is seen telling him to get the non-bowling left arm higher if he wants to bowl fuller length deliveries. “When your (left) elbow goes higher, you will automatically feel the weight shifting  . If your left arm is higher, the right arm will get straighter and come ahead.  And only head position is what you always should work on.” Yudhvir Singh is all ears, and says his “outswing is also getting better as I have started to complete my action”. Zaheer nods, “It will get even better. You have to keep doing it speed (bring down the left arm down before release”. 

On Saturday night, those Zaheer tips could be seen in  LSG’s Yudhvir’s double-strike. The strapping lad had Atharva Taide hurried for pace, and holing out to fine-leg before slipping in a cracker of a nip-backer that burst through the bat-swing of Prabhsimran Singh. Zaheer would have been happy with the the height of the non-bowling arm and the speed with which it came down and the head position.

Lucknow have posted a total of 160 to chase on a wicket that is yet to reveal itself following an innings of the odd one turning, another one holding and another one whizzing off the surface. 25-year-old Yudhvir Singh had received his debut cap earlier this evening and has left instant impression with two wickets off his first two overs. That second one in particular - with Prabhsimran Singh's off stump cartwheeling - made KL Rahul pull off a fist pump. On comes Mark Wood, who has already bagged a fifer on this ground a couple weeks ago. 28/2 after four overs.

Sriram Veera: Avesh Khan’s first ball was a short one and Matt Short bashed it to midwicket boundary to trigger KL Rahul’s disappointment and anger at the bowler. He jabbered away, as Avesh Khan hung his head and walked back. The second was a good ball, fuller on a length, but the next two were shortish again, and Short lapped the first one and cut the latter for two fours. The cameraperson zoomed on KL both times but was met with a stiff upper lip. Luckily, Avesh recovered to send full-length nipbackers off the final two balls to trouble Short.

A second wicket in the second over for Yudhvir Singh. Over the wicket to the right-handed Punjab opener, angles it in and the ball goes between the bat and pad and the stumps go cartwheeling. What a debut spell this! 17/2.

Avesh Khan in to bowl the 2nd over and Matthew Short with a pull shot to get a four. And the 3rd is played off the leg side for four more. Great, confident batting. Add another boundary to Short's tally as he hits another one cleans through the covers. PBKS 13/1 after 2 overs

We are back for the run chase and Prabhsimran and Atharva Taide open for Punjab. Yudhvir Singh will open the attack and after 2 dots, he has taken out Taide. Avesh Khan with the catch!!! PBKS 0/1 after 0.3 overs

Sam Curran to close the innings. Over the wicket to the right hander, Ayush Badoni on strike. Goes too far wide off the first one, it has possibly slipped off his hands. Nails the yorker off the next one. A slower one and Badoni rotates the strike, which is when the destruction begins. A slower one and the Impact Player Krishnappa Gowtham locates Sikandar Raza on the boundary. Yudhvir Singh off the next one, goes down the ground again and holes Shahrukh Khan, who replicates his drag the ball in catch from the ropes. Punjab' stand-in captain is on a hattrick.A yorker to Ravi Bishnoi, and Lucknow collect three off a misfield from Nathan Ellis. A high full toss from Curran in exchange for a double. 159/8 is where Lucknow close the innings.

Arshdeep Singh in to bowl the penultimate over. Offers width and length to Rahul, who upper cuts it behind for a four down third man. "The run rate hasn't picked up for Lucknow. You can argue the pitch is a bit two-paced, but it was quick earlier," says Anjum Chopra. The left-arm pacer goes round the wicket. The pressure has piled on the home team in these slog overs and with Pooran, Stoinis back in the hut, Rahul takes a chance off another short one but finds the fielder. 150/6, Lucknow.

Sam Curran comes in for a third over and strikes. Back of a length, outside the leg stump and appeals for a possible caught behind. Nothing from the umpire. Curran goes upstairs. UltraEdge shows a clear spike as the ball passes Stoinis' gloves. A fifth wicket for Punjab. 

Rabada vs Rahul again. A couple of looseners from the Proteas to start with, including a low full toss, but the Lucknow captain has been unable to latch onto it. A short one later finally allows him to bag his first six of the night. It was short and wide and got creamed over deep point. Another short one, pretty high above the helmet is not deemed as wide. Rahul opts for a review and gets it. 12 from the over, 138/4 after 17.

Marcus Stoinis takes little time to get going. Consecutive sixes off Rahul Chahar. First one is straight down the ground, just about crosses the fence. The second goes deep in the stands behind deep mid wicket. Follows em' with a wild heave that safely lands outside the circle. 15 come off the 16th over. 126/4.

Nicholas Pooran comes in. The protagonist from Lucknow's one wicket-final ball heist in Bangalore a few nights back. Rabada pitches one down the leg and appeals for a caught behind. Review follows but the UltraEdge shows there's nothing on it. Back he goes to bowl again. Back of a length, pull shot and Shahrukh Khan completes a second catch off two legal deliveries. Superb over that from Rabada. 111/4, Lucknow after 15 overs. Strategic timeout.

Sriram Veera: “Out out …” even as a team-mate enquired about the legality of this catch, Shahrukh Khan was absolutely confident. He had leaped to his left near the boundary ropes to pouch the pull from Krunal Pandya, stepped out after he threw the ball up, and almost sauntered back in to complete the catch. No wonder, he was absolutely sure about it. Krunal had to go big there; it was the 15th over and the likes of Marcus Stoinis and Nicolas Pooran were still in the dugout. It’s a tricky pitch, two paced, and with it helping both turn every now and then and also the seamers were able to bounce one sharply from just back of length. It would then play slow and janus-faced again. It would be interesting to see how the big hitters go in the final four.

Krunal Pandya looked in the gung-ho mode from ball one of this over. A short one from Rabada to start with, edged behind for a couple. The Proteas pacer has smelled the southpaw's intentions. Bangs in another, and this time, Pandya pulls it and locates Shahrukh Khan on the fence. The momentum of the catch takes him behind. A little throw up, to come back in and complete the clean take. Lucknow lose a third wicket for 110.

Chahar pitches it in the slot and gets thumped over his head and down the ground for four. A first fifty off the season for KL Rahul and it's taken him 40 deliveries to get there. Seven come off the 14th. 108/2. Can Lucknow slog to another big total in the last six?

Arshdeep Singh back into the attack, round the wicket to KL Rahul. Starts off with a back of a length delivery angling onto off. The next one is shorter and dealt with a pull for four. 100 up for Lucknow. Overall a good over for Punjab. Seven off it. 101/2 after 13 overs.

Rahul Chahar into the attack, puts a halt on the boundaries off the past couple of overs. The odd ball has spun, odd one has surprised the batters with bounce, quite the wicket this. Just the six runs off that 12th over. 94/2 after 12 overs.

Sikandar Raza into attack for a second over. A seam up delivery to break the ice from the Zimbabwe international. He oversteps off the next one and goes astray to concede four leg byes as well, deflected by the pads. Flat and turning away off the next one and he lofts it over the infield for another. 14 off the over. 88/2 after 11.

Sam Curran returns for a second over. Starts with a length ball on the off and KL Rahul places it between short third and backward point for four. Goes short against Krunal Pandya and gets pulled for another boundary. 10 off the over. 74/2, Lucknow.

Spin from the other end as well. Sam Curran brings in a seventh bowler to bowl the eighth over. Sikandar Raza from over the wicket to the two right handers. Fires one flat on off and Rahul cuts him for four. 

Keeps the angle slightly tighter and incoming to Hooda, who plays it all over and is trapped lbw. No reviews needed for that one. Lucknow two down for 62. Umpire signals strategic timeout.

Harpreet Brar strikes. Kyle Mayers goes for the sweep shot and locates the fielder on the fence. Departs for 29 off 23. Punjab one down for 55 after eight overs.

Best over so far from Punjab. Matthew Short returns for a second over and offers just the three runs. Fifty partnership up and the platform has been set nicely for the team that has scored 190 plus in three off its first four games. 52/0 after seven overs.

Harpreet Brar to wrap up the powerplay. Offers a short one to Rahul, who latches onto it with a cut for four. Good comeback from the left-armer as he keeps it down to seven off his first over. 49/0 after six overs and the field restrictions are lifted.

Short against this player doesn't work, especially after he's smelled blood off it earlier. Mayers had picked Curran for a maximum off a bouncer. Rabada angles it more towards the southpaw's body but gets pulled for a similar result. The boundaries have come pretty consistently in the powerplay. Nine off the latest over. Lucknow, 42/0 after five.

Change in bowling from the other end as well. Sam Curran takes off Arshdeep Singh and introduces himself. Keeps control on the flow of runs, with just three off his first five, before Kyle Mayers uses the width and the short length delivery to back punch one all the way for six. What a picturesque shot!! Nine off the over. 33/0 after four overs.

Sriram Veera: A nasty lifter from Kagiso Rabada caught KL Rahul by  surprise in the third over. It leaped from nowhere, from just back of length, and Rahul had no time to escape. He just jabbed at it and winced as it reared up at his glove. His response next ball though was great. He leaned forward to punch a length delivery, a tad fuller than the previous, through the line, on the up over covers for an one-bounce four. “That’s extraordinary shot,” Eoin Morgan would coo on air. The previous ball threatened his face, the next one thudded into the boundary with an imperious shot. To trust the pitch and himself after that near-knockout blow was quite something.

Kagiso Rabada into his first over. Back of a length to Mayers and an edge carries for a boundary. KL Rahul then, plays a more clean hit off a length delivery. Inside outs over covers for four. Classy batting so far from the Lucknow captain. 10 off the over. 24/0 after three overs.

You'd have heard this many a times but we'll say it again, KL Rahul at his best is one of the most aesthetic batters of all time. Arshdeep Singh hasn't done much wrong while going for his former Punjab captain's pads but gets flicked nonchalantly for four. A first boundary for the Lucknow captain. 14/0 after two.

Kyle Mayers had started off his IPL journey with LSG with a magnificent fifty. After that, it hasn't been as good for the Caribbean but he gets off the mark in style tonight. Matthew Short begins the proceedings for Punjab and gets sweeped for a six in the first over. 7/0 after the first.

It's hot but not too much wind. Short hit on the leg side, straight boundaries are the longest. This is a fresh wicket but it looks tired. It looks specky, some green patches but some very dry areas. A red soil wicket, expect the ball to come on better on this track.

Sam Curran: We'll bowl first. Something we haven't done all season. Shilkhar picked up an injury last game, don't know how bad it is but hopefully he won't be out long. His absence is huge, we've got two Indian batters coming in and Raza is back in the XI. The conditions looks good.

KL Rahul: First game on this strip, anything would have worked. It is exciting to challenge ourselves on different conditions. It is our first season here, so each game we'll assess and modify. Every game we make a few changes, settle on a 12-13 and take a call depending on the game. Each game we have turned up and we have been challenged every time, but players have found answers.

Deepak Hooda: The preparation is the same for me personally no matter what tournament. I believe in the processes that I’ve followed for the last 3-4 years. No difference in the way I prepare because I’ve played International cricket, because I believe I’ve played Internationals because of these processes. Personally, I prefer playing top-order like I have in domestic cricket but I like to play the situation more than the batting number.
