The Indian Premier League Match No. 32 between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Wednesday took a dramatic end as the match ended in a tie and proceeded for a Super Over, the first of IPL 2025.
After being put in to bat, Delhi managed a competitive total of 188/5 with Abishek Porel’s 49 and late flourishes from Tristan Stubbs and skipper Axar Patel. While chasing 189, Rajasthan, despite losing their skipper Sanju Samson to an injury early, kept in the game with fifties from opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Rana.
With nine need off the last over, DC ace pacer Mitchell Starc only gave eight runs to end the match in parity. In Super Over, DC chased down 12 with two balls remaining to get their fifth win of the season and move top of the points table.
Ahead of this Delhi vs Rajasthan match, 14 matches have ever finished with no decisive winner at the end of 40 overs in IPL. The T20 format’s famous tie-breaker has thus been in effect in only a handful of IPL games in history, starting with the nerve-wracking match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan that ended in a tie in IPL 2009.
Before this game, the last IPL Super Over, took place four years ago in 2021 when Delhi and Sunrisers Hyderabad were locked at 159 before DC eventually clinched the win in the Super Over. Only one tie from the lot witnessed a double Super Over with Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bengaluru fighting to the brink in an IPL 2020 match in Dubai.
Delhi also became the team to feature in most Super Over matches in IPL.
SRH have featured in four Super Over matches. While SRH have finished on the losing side thrice in their four games, DC have won 4/5.
