A Diwakar Ram hat-trick helped hosts Uttar Pradesh beat Orissa 5-2 in their opening match of the 4th Hockey India Senior Men’s National Championship 2014 (Division A) at the Dhyan Chand Stadium, Lucknow, on Tuesday.
UP forward Amir Khan netted the first goal in the 10th minute in this Pool C match. Ram made full use of a penalty-corner awarded to UP in the 33rd minute to make the half-time score 2-0. In the 44th minute, Ajit Pandey sounded the board to increase the lead.

However, four minutes later Amon Mirash Tirkey dodged past defenders and succeeded in reducing the margin to 3-1.
However, Ram capitalised on another penalty-corner awarded in the 54th minute. Joseph Topno scored the second goal for Orissa in the 61st minute.
Ram netted another goal through a penalty-corner in the 64th minute to make the score 5-2 in favour of the hosts.
In another Pool C match, a hat-trick of goals by Birshu Bhengra — in the 57th, 63rd and 68th minute — paved the way for a 3-0 win for Hockey Jharkhand against Hockey Bhopal. And in a Pool D game, Railways beat FCI 3-0.
