Australian opener Usman Khawaja – who is also the Queensland skipper – managed to get everyone wondering what he was doing when he came up with a very unorthodox coin toss during the Marsh Cup Final Tuesday morning.

In the presence of the match referee, Khawaja took a short run-up and tossed the coin so high in the air that it landed about 10 metres away. The tactic, unfortunately, did not work for him, with Western Australia captain Ashton Turner winning the toss and electing to field first at All Border Oval.

When the commentator asked Khawaja about the coin toss, Khawaja said, “It’s a nice little toss.”

Earlier this week, Shane Warne criticised Khawaja for not showing enough enthusiasm to play for Australia, after he was omitted from the Test squad. Was the Queensland batsman’s unorthodox coin toss a sneaky sledge directed at the King of Spin?

Meanwhile, put to bat first Queensland scored 205 runs in 49.3 overs in which Khawaja played a 26-run knock. Only seven number batsman J Peirson made an impressive 79 to take the team’s total past 200.
