‘For some strange reason, some water was sent to him:’ Sunil Gavaskar unhappy with Gujarat Titans’ tactics in the IPL final

Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar questioned Gujarat Titans’ tactics in the Indian Premier League final against Chennai Super Kings when they broke the ‘rhythm’ of Mohit Sharma in the final over by sending drinks on to field and skipper Hardik Pandya having a long chat with the bowler.

“He had bowled the first 3-4 delivery absolutely brilliantly. Then, for some strange reason, some water was sent to him. In the middle of the over, some drink was sent to him. Then Hardik Pandya came and spoke with him. You know when a bowler is in that rhythm and he is mentally also there, nobody should have said anything to him. Maybe from a distance, they could have just said ‘well bowled’,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.

While defending 13 runs, Mohit bowled four perfect yorkers and gave away just three runs from first four balls but could not defend 10 off final two balls as Ravindra Jadeja scored a six and a four off the following deliveries.

“Going to them, talking to him – I do not think that was the right thing to do because suddenly, he was looking here and there. Till then, he was focused and I do not think what they did was the right idea. Because after that, he went for runs,” he added.

With the victory, Chennai Super Kings now have the joint-highest IPL titles (5) along with Mumbai Indians.
