It is often said that records are meant to be broken, and in cricket, a long list of milestones is shattered with every passing match. However, a few brilliant individual performances are so exceptional that they stand the test of time and remain tough to overhaul.
These records are among the trickiest to break, but Finch believes that among the highest scores across formats, it is his 172 that will be the first to fall. He shared his opinion on social media platform X when asked about the same, even naming three players he believes have the potential to break his 7-year-old record.
Finch named star Indian opener and current World No. 1 T20I batter Abhishek Sharma, his compatriot and former World No. 1 T20I batter Travis Head, and former England captain Jos Buttler as the prime contenders to score in excess of 172 in a T20I innings.
The Australian even predicted when it will be broken, placing his bet on the upcoming T20 World Cup set to be hosted in India. The batting-friendly pitches there have already seen some very high-scoring games in the recently concluded T20I series against Bangladesh and England, as well as in the last two seasons of the Indian Premier League. Finch said that the good batting wickets and the next generation’s power will ensure his record is broken.
He wrote, “I’m pretty sure it’ll be broken at this T20 World Cup. There’ll be some really good batting wickets and the next generation’s power and skill are on another level.”
