Shreyas Iyer, Punjab Kings captain speaks about their win over CSK

Asked if this is going to be Punjab's template of batting first, Shreyas Iyer says: "Absolutely. This is going to be the template, irrespective of the ground. We have variety in the batting line-up. Great hitters, great timers, scintillating to watch Priyansh bat from the outside. When I had a chat with him in the last game, he was a bit timid in his decision-making against Jofra. Tonight, he was backing his instincts. It was free-flowing and that is the mindset I want in everyone. Today, he kept on going, he was fearless and it was basically one of the top knocks I have seen in the IPL so far. (On Chahal being held back) That was a tactical call, because Dube had already played a few deliveries, and also Conway. With Yuzi coming in, we know how destructive he (Dube) can be. But Yuzi is a smart bowler. My instincts felt that pacers bowling slower balls into the wicket (would work), and we basically wanted pace against Dube. We delayed a bit but eventually, it worked out. (On the dropped catches) We were just talking right now, and we were saying we have not played our best game yet. Start of the tournament, some nerves are there. When we get fearless on the field…we need to go back, take some catches, do some group sessions. But we won the game, and that is most important."

Shashank Singh, who scored a half century for Punjab, spoke about the game: "When I went into bat, we were five down for 90-odd. My plan was to play with minimal risk and maximum reward. My role was to give more strike to Priyansh. The way he was batting, I knew if he bats close to 15-16 overs, we will be close to 200 and 200 was a par score on this surface. (On his mindset when he came into bat) When you enter the field, you don't think about the past performance or the future performance, it's just the bat and the ball, so my goal was to be on the wicket and maximise my scoring. Lara sir the way he told me about my batting, he told me that how should I go and take my batting, usually at 6-8, power-hitters come but I'm someone who times the ball. I’m lucky to have Ricky Ponting with me, before coming into the IPL (this season), I wasn’t playing that well in the nets but the way Ricky sir believed in me and backed me, kudos to him. In match one, when he (Priyansh Arya) played against GT, he showed glimpses. He does it for his state side, he is doing the same here at the highest level, I’m very happy for him, he is a very bright prospect for the country as well. We have a very good side, we take it match by match, the side looks very good on paper, we have to win those moments and stay in the present."

Asked about the dropped catches and what has gone wrong for CSK this season, he said: "In the last four games, that is the only point of difference. It has been very critical. Every time we are dropping the catch, the same batter is adding 20-25-30 runs extra. If you leave out the RCB game, the last three chases, it was a matter of one or two or maybe three hits. Sometimes you have to appreciate the way Priyansh played. He took his chances. It was high-risk batting and it came off really well for him. Even though we were taking wickets, they kept the momentum going. 10-15 (less we could have conceded), if we would have executed well, and at the end of the day, it also comes down to the dropped catches. Today was spot-on from a batting perspective. This is what we wanted. Our best batters, who can play pace very well, played up the order and had a brilliant powerplay. It was a better, improved performance and many positives. Want to take some positives out of it, and we were two or three hits away (from winning). He (Conway) is more of a timer of the ball, very useful up the order. When you have Jaddu, known for that (finishing) role particularly, you expect that. When you know the batter is struggling…initially he (Conway) was still timing it well. We waited and waited until (he started struggling). Told the guys we have to enjoy the fielding. If you are nervous, you will drop some catches. If you look to be a standout fielder, the first catch taken, the first boundary saved helps everyone. Batting and bowling, you can have a bad day, but in fielding, that is something we are trying to work on, but right now, it is not happening."

Since that win over Mumbai Indians in their first game of the season, Chennai Super Kings have lost four games in the trot. 

Today, they had their chances and end up losing by 18 runs against the Punjab Kings.

This game had plenty of drama: A Priyansh Arya century in 39 balls. Yuzi Chahal bowling just one over. Devon Conway retiring hurt for 69. A late MS Dhoni blitz.   

On the first ball of the final over, with CSK needing 28 runs for victory off 6 balls, Dhoni hits the ball straight into Chahal's hands.

Dhoni is gone for 27!

This was a tough catch to take, but Chahal hangs on to it! Given how many catches both teams have dropped tonight, this could have easily been another one! But Chahal does well! 

And now last game's half centurian Vijay Shankar will join Jadeja out in the middle! 

Arshdeep started the penultimate over really well! With just four runs off three balls! Then Dhoni plundered ten runs off two balls with a four and a maximum! 

Arshdeep Singh ends the 19th over with CSK needing 28 runs off the final over and it will be Dhoni on strike! 

Dhoni nails a maximum off Lockie Ferguson on the fifth ball. It;s a hit straight over the bowler's head! And then comes the shocker! Devon Conway is retired out! He walks back after scoring 69 off 49 balls.

And right after that strange dismissal, Dhoni hits another six behind the keeper's head! Two sixes in two balls from Dhoni! The fans go wild at the Mullanpur Stadium. Dhoni is happy, with a wide grin on his face. Jadeja is grinning too. 

43 off 12 needed for CSK. Dhoni is batting on 15 runs off seven balls. 

Yuzi Chahal is introduced into the attack in the 17th over! And he starts off by bowling to Dhoni! On the second ball, he almost induces a catch off Conway. But the ball falls just short. 

Dhoni vs Chahal will be an interesting battle: they have faced off in the IPL in 14 innings. Dhoni has scored 100 runs against the spinner at a strike rate of 128 but has been dismissed by Chahal three times! 

A good first over from Chahal! Gives away just nine runs! CSK have not scored a boundary in 20 balls now! 

CSK need 59 runs off three overs! 

Shivam Dube is gone for 42 after being flummoxed by a knuckle ball from Ferguson! Dube's stumps are rattled and the Mullanpur stadium erupts, even the CSK jersey wearing fans as they seem to think Chennai will send out Dhoni! AND THEY'RE RIGHT! 

It's Dhoni who walks out! CSK need 69 runs off 25 balls!

Chennai Super Kings need to climb a mountain off their final five overs. Thankfully, they have two set batters in Dube and Conway in the middle and stars like Vijay Shankar (who scored a half century last game), Jadeja and Dhoni coming in after this.  

Devon Conway is making the most of his chances after being dropped twice in two balls earlier in Jansen's over. Conway has reached his 50, and this is only the fourth half century in IPL 2025 from a CSK batter! 

Jansen gets pummeled by both batters now! Two sixes and a four in that over as CSK get 19 runs in that over.

There has been plenty of talk about what Shivam Dube is doing at no 4 for CSK. Today, he's answering his crictics with a 18-ball 30 after coming in as Chennai's Impact Player. This is his highest score in IPL 2025 so far and CSK will hope he can vindicate the faith they have shown him

Marco Jansen should be furious with his fielders! Two drop catches in two balls!  

First it is Chahal who cannot his hands on the ball at short fine leg on the first ball and then Yash Thakur at third cannot hold on to an even easier catch! Conway gets two lives in the first two balls of the 12th over! 

And there is more agony in store for Jansen as captain Shreyas Iyer misfields. thankfully it yields just one run. The over ends with a cracking four (which was not going to be fielded by anyone).

Chennai Super Kings are 110/2 after 12 overs. They need 110 to win off 48 balls

Chennai Super Kings' batting coach Mike Hussey is asked why the team think tank has asked captain Ruturaj Gaikwad to bat at no 3 if he is still in the team and had done well as an opener in the last season. 

Hussey reveals that it was Gaikwad who wanted to bat at No 3. 

CSK havent chased a 175-plus target since 2021!

"That's all in the past. We don't worry about that," says Hussey! "It's a good batting pitch. There is some dew there. Anything under 80 runs in the for the final six overs will be comfortable to win!" he says. 

Chennai at the moment need 119 runs from the final nine overs. 

A rare six for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025! The ball flies 73 metres for a maximum! Shivam Dube pummels a ball from Ferguson over the ropes for a maximum. This is the first six of CSK's innings today and it has come in the 10th over!! 

This is also now the highest individual score for Shivam Dube as he hits the six against Punjab Kings.

In the official commentary, Darren Ganga makes a point that CSK should consider playing Jadeja in the No 4 spot rather than Shivam Dube whose top score this season is 19 runs. Dube has come in as the Impact Player today. 

“I’m all for Dube batting at no 4. But that’s if he is getting runs. When you are out of form…” says Ganga just as Dube hits a four. 

“Jadeja has not been utilised! Why not use him?”

Meanwhile, Dube has scored 13 runs off 8 balls as CSK are 79/2 after 9 overs

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad's stint in the middle ends after three balls. And CSK go from 61/0 to 62/2! 

Gaikwad gives Shashank Singh an easy catch. And CSK find themselves in trouble again.

CSK call Shivam Dube as the Impact Player in place of Pathirana. He really needs to score today! So far, 19 runs is the highest score he has had in IPL 2025. 

Chennai did really well to navigate out of the powerplay overs without losing a wicket. But Glenn Maxwell finally gives the hosts a breakthrough. He flummoxes Rachin Ravindra, who gets stumped.

Glenn Maxwell and Marco Jansen are brought into the attack and they cannot do much either as Conway and Ravindra keep the run-scoring going. And more importantly, they have lost no wickets after six overs while guiding CSK past the 50-run mark! 

A good start for Chennai here from both the New Zealand batters.

Chennai Super Kings are 59/0 after 6 overs against Punjab Kings (Comparatively, Punjab Kings were 75/3 after the end of the powerplay).

Four boundaries for CSK in the 4th over! 17 runs in that over! 

Yash Thakur was very economical in his first over but gets hammered in his second. On the first ball, it was Conway who helped himself to a boundary, and then the over ended with three back-to-back boundaries from Rachin Ravindra!

The CSK batters targetting Arshdeep Singh. He gets hit for a four on the offside through the extra cover by Conway and then hit for one more four by Rachin over the keeper's head! 

That third over fetched CSK nine runs.

Ocne again, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad will not be opening the innings for Chennai Super Kings. And we have two New Zealand batters opening the innings for CSK. Meanwhile, Arshdeep Singh has the first over for Punjab. 

And CSK start off with two boundaries --- one each for Conway and Rachin --- in the first over which sees them score 9/0.

Punjab Kings bring in Yash Thakur as the Impact Player in place of their actual impact player from the first innings, Priyansh Arya. 

Priyansh Arya was dismissed by Jofra Archer on the first ball in the previous game. But today, on the first ball, Arya smashed a six! 

"After the last game, (Punjab captain) Shreyas Iyer talked about backing your instincts, he suggested to me that I play the way I want to. I was thinking that if I get the first ball in my slot, I will definitely hit it for a six. I want to express myself as much as I can and not restrict myself. The ball is coming nicely onto the bat, the ball is not turning much, so we have to bowl well in the powerplay and take wickets," he said to the broadcasters after the end of the innings. 

An unsmiling Priyansh Arya is here to talk to the broadcasters after Punjab innings. "Main expressive nahi hoon. (Iam not that expressive) But I have a good feeling from inside," he says before talking about his mindset while batting: "Dab ke naa khelu... jitna ho sake apne aap ko express karu. (Don't play with fear... express myself as much as possible)."

Shashank Singh gets to his 50 off the final ball of Punjab Kings innings! Ends with 52 runs off 36 balls! 

Chennai Suepr Kings have to better their best ever chase in a winning effort! 

Punjab Kings end with 219/6. This is the highest score in the IPL on this ground! 

Punjab Kings have reached the 200-run mark! And its thanks to this partnership between Marco Jansen and Shashank Singh who have scored 47 runs off 29 balls after the dismissal of Priyansh Arya! Shashank Singh is closing in on his 50 while Jansen is also batting strong here! 

Another drop catch, this time from Rachin Ravindra. ball hit the toe end of the ball, flew really high. And Rachin had too much time in the mind and dropped Shashank Singh! This could prove costly as Shashank is batting on 40 from 27 balls! 

Right after Priyansh Arya departs, Punjab Kings have slowed down! Marco Jansen hit a boundary on the very first ball after Arya's dismissal but in the next 13 balls there is just one four from Punjab Kings! Some good overs in there by Matheesha Pathirana and Jadeja, who manage to arrest the run rate a little. 

As we have a time out after 16 overs, Punjab are 170/6 

Punjab Kings have won just one game out of six at the Mullanpur Stadium. Today that could change, thanks to a 24-year-old playing in his first IPL. 

Priyansh Arya departs for 103 after entertaining the home crowd at Mullanpur. He's rode his luck at times, but has made it count!

Priyansh Arya take a bow! Arya hits a century in just 39 balls as Punjab bring up 150 runs as well! Arya has been completely undeterred by the wickets that have fallen at the other end! Second fastest hundred by an Indian in the IPL! the fastest came in 2010 by Yusuf Pathan (37-ball hundred).

CSK bring in Pathirana to bowl the 13th over and Priyansh Arya hits him for three sixes and a four: sixes on his second, third and fourth balls and then a four on the fifth ball! 23 RUNS IN THAT OVER! 

Ravichandran Ashwin was absolutely tonked in that over! Three sixes in that over!

20 runs coming off the 12th over as Priyansh Arya started off with two sixes! On the second six, Choudhary caught the ball, but he stepped onto the ropes. that's a six! 

Then there is a slight lull, before Shashank Singh also smashes a six on the fifth ball! 

Punjab Kings are 128/5 after 12 overs

CSK hand the ball to the wearer of the Purple Cap, Noor Ahmed. And he starts off terribly! After two overs where there were no hits to the fence, Noor's wayward bowling allows Shashank Singh to smash a six on the first ball. Then Priyansh Arya hits a four later in the over!  

14 runs in the 11th over as Punjab cross the 100-run mark!  

After being smashed for 21 runs in his first over of the night, Ravichandran Ashwin comes back with style, giving CSK two wickets in one over! 

He first tricks Nehal Wadhera to top edge the ball into the gloves of Dhoni and then gets Glenn Maxwell to offer a easy catch! 

TWO RUNS AND TWO WICKETS IN THAT OVER FROM ASHWIN

Priyansh Arya gets to his half century with a massive six off Ravichandran Ashwin. And he's taken just 19 balls to get there while Punjab have been losing plenty of wickets at the other end! Five fours and four sixes so far from Arya in this very entertaining innings! 

Talking about Priyansh Arya earlier this season (after Arya had scored a brisk 23-ball 47 with seven fours and two sixes) in his dressing room debrief speech, Punjab Kings coach Ponting had said: “I reckon we set the tone with a guy playing in his first IPL game… Priyansh, the way he started today... He is a very special potential opening batsman for us in the tournament.”

Khaleel Ahmed ends the 5th over with a wicket at last! Stoinis is gone for just 4 runs! And Punjab Kings are 54/3! Just eight runs in that over, but so much entertainment! There were two drop catches there! 

First, Stoinis was dropped on 1 run by Shankar at mid wicket. Khaleel is disappointed. To be fair to the fielder, that was a really hard shot to catch! 

Then, two balls later, Shankar has an even harder catch to hang on to, this time of Arya! 

But on the final ball of the over, Stoinis runs out of luck and gets an edge which is held on to comfortably by Devon Conway.

No matter what's happening at the other end, Priyansh Arya is batting like a man possessed! He slaps around three back-to-back boundaries off the bowling of Mukesh Choudhary.

CSK have a big breakthrough: Shreyas Iyer is gone! This is Punjab's top scorer for IPL 2025. And CSK have sent him back with just 9 runs against his name!  Iyer is bowled by Khaleel Ahmed in the third over. He did hit a massive six. But then was completely flummoxed by that ball: the length was spot on, there was not much movement, just a little drift inwards and the bat missed the ball completely.

Punjab Kings are flying thanks to Priyansh Arya, despite losing their first wicket. Arya ends the second over with a six! Once again, barely moved his feet, just a swivel of his upper body and using the pace of the ball.

Chennai Super Kings have their breakthrough! Prabhsimran Singh departs after chopping on the ball onto his stumps! And his stay in the middle lasts just two balls. 

And Mukesh Choudhary has his first wicket of IPL 2025. Right after one of the most expensive first overs in IPL 2025, we have a wicket!

Chennai Super Kings have handed the ball to Khaleel Ahmed. And the game starts of with a bang! We have six on the first ball of the game as Priyansh Arya barely moves his feet but slashes hard and the ball flies into the crowd!  This is only the 4th time in IPL history  that we have had a six on the first ball of the match. (The previous three batters were Naman Ojha, Virat Kohli and Phil Salt.)

On the second ball, Arya hands an easy catch straight to Khaleel but he cannot hang on. On the next ball, he oversteps and it's a free hit. On that ball, the ball flies towards Jadeja who plucks out an award-winning catch! But it won't stand. Arya hits one more six in the over! 

17 RUNS IN OVER 1!

For the pitch report for the Punjab vs Chennai game, we had Daren Ganga and Michael Clarke.

Ganga mentions that the game will played on a different pitch compared to one that was used in Punjab's last game. 

"The boundaries are different now, with the square boundaries at 70m and the straight boundary stretching to 74m. Batters, especially right-handers, will likely target the leg side. Looking at the pitch, it resembles the one used in Punjab Kings' match against the Royals. Dew doesn't seem like a factor tonight.Both wickets look similar, and though you can spot a few dry patches, the surface remained pretty steady on Saturday. I don’t think the toss will have a huge impact. The key here is the length of your deliveries. Overpitching is beneficial for the batters as the ball comes onto the bat nicely, allowing them to hit through the line. But if you bowl too short, especially with slower pace, it’ll play into the batters’ hands. Hitting the top of the stumps length is the sweet spot here. That’s the key in both the powerplay and at the death," he said. 

Punjab Kings win the toss and have opted to bat first. Both teams have opted to play the same XIs today as their last match.

Recently, CSK star MS Dhoni spoke about the retirement question on an interview that went viral on his app. 

“I am still playing the IPL and one year at a time. I am 43, by the end of this IPL season, I will be 44 in July. So I have 10 months to decide whether I want to play one more year and it’s not me deciding; it’s my body, whether you can play or not,” Dhoni said on Raj Shamani’s podcast. It could not be ascertained when the podcast was recorded.

CSK captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is the team's top scorer after four games in IPL 2025. Gaikwad has scored 121 runs with Rachin Ravindra second with 109. Vijay Shankar is third with 78 runs, 69 of which came in the last game against Delhi Capitals. 

Dhoni is fourth in the tally with 76 runs. 

Mahendra Singh Dhoni has been under plenty of scrutiny this season after scoring just 76 runs from four innings in IPL 2025. 

OF those, 30 have come in the last game where he batted till the last ball but could not finish the game for the five-time champions. Dhoni had in fact, walked out to bat in CSK’s chase of 184 against Delhi with the score reading 74/5. Chennai needed 110 off 56 deliveries with the asking rate standing a shade under 12. Despite batting with Vijay Shankar, who scored a half century, the veteran finisher could not help his team to victory.

In a previous game against RCB, Dhoni had raised eyebrows by walking into bat at No 9, behind Ravichandran Ashwin. 

CSK coach Stephen Fleming has explained after the defeat to RCB that Dhoni was deciding when to bat.

“It’s a time thing. MS judges it,” Fleming said. “His body is… his knees aren’t what they used to be. And he’s moving okay, but there’s still an attrition aspect to it. He can’t bat ten overs running full stick. So he will gauge on the day what he can give us. If the game’s in the balance like today, he will go a little bit earlier, and he backs other players when other opportunities are up. So he’s balancing that.” 

The Chennai Super Kings have had a turbulent season so far in the IPL. They started off with a victory over fellow five-time champions Mumbai Indians. But since that victory, things have gone downhill for the Chennai franchise.

Chennai lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru at home by 50 runs in a game where Dhoni walked in to bat at No 9, behind Ravichandran Ashwin. Then they lost to Rajasthan Royals by a slim margin of six runs in Guwahati before being handed a 25-run defeat by Delhi Capitals at home. 

The fact that all three of their defeats have come in chases puts plenty of pressure on their batting order. Can they solve those issues before things heat up in the IPL standings? 

Punjab Kings find themselves in fourth position in the IPL 2025 standings with two wins from their three games. Under captain Shreyas Iyer and coach Ricky Ponting, the team which has never won the IPL title look like the real deal. 

Remember, it was only last season that Iyer had won the IPL title, albeit with the Kolkata Knight Riders. The Punjab Kings would be hoping he can effect similar magic here with a perenially under-achieving franchise.
