IPL 2025: Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Rajasthan Royals for first win at home

The Rajasthan Royals have won the toss and have opted to bowl first. Rajat Patidar cannot win a toss at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, it feels. For the first time this season, they are batting first at home. 

Royal Challengers Bengaluru have not managed to win a single game at home in three tries. Can they turn that dubious record around today against the Rajasthan Royals?

Former India cricketer Anil Kumble, who hails from Bengaluru, said: “RCB need to break that jinx. Bengaluru fans will be hoping that they can. Just a matter of adjusting to that surface. You can’t always go and win the toss. Chasing down a score they have done exceptionally well. At the Chinnaswamy Stadium, you're never sure what the ideal first innings score is. But they will still have to assess the pitch.”

Each time the Royal Challengers Bengaluru have chased down a target this season, talisman batter Virat Kohli has also managed to hit an unbeaten half-century.

Kohli has scored 322 runs for RCB this season in eight innings. This puts him at no 8 in the IPL 2025 race for the Orange Cap. 

The importance of top-order batter Yashasvi Jaiswal to Rajasthan Royals' cause cannot be understated. As the Royals, the team to win the inaugural IPL 2025, take on perennial under-achievers RCB, they will hope that Jaiswal can keep his form with the bat going. 

At the start of IPL 2025, Jaiswal had a woeful run of scores: he scored 34 runs in his first three games. Then, Yashasvi Jaiswal picked up steam: he has now racked up four half-centuries in his last five innings.

Today, RR will be hoping for more of the same against RCB from Jaiswal. 

Talking to the host broadcaster about what was going right for the RCB this season, coach Andy Flower said: "We're pretty good at keeping our dressing room environment fairly level: whether we win or lose. Rajat (Patidar, RCB captain) is a pretty calm guy, he has a humility about him that is admirable," said Flower.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Rajasthan Royals by nine wickets at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur earlier this season. 

Rajasthan Royals will miss the services of their skipper, Sanju Samson, for the Indian Premier League 2025 match on Thursday against Royal Challengers Bengaluru when the team travel for their away game at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is the Rajasthan Royals’ leading run scorer this season with 307 runs in eight matches. Having racked up three successive fifties in the last three games, Jaiswal is ninth in the race for the Orange Cap, just behind Virat Kohli.

In the bowling department, Jofra Archer has been the Royals’ most effective pacer this season. He comes into the game with eight wickets and as the leader of their bowling unit.

At 14 years and 23 days, Vaibhav Suryavanshi on Saturday became the youngest player in the history of the Indian Premier League to make his debut for Rajasthan Royals against Lucknow Super Giants at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. The teenager has been named in the subs for the hosts and came to bat in the chase.

The year 2024 has been life-changing for the India U-19 opener. In October, Vaibhav Suryavanshi etched his name in the history books as he became the youngest player to score an international century. Vaibhav scored 104 off 62 balls in India Under-19’s Youth Test against Australia in Chennai.
