India vs South Africa, 1st Test Day 5, Highlights:

13:48 (IST)06 Oct 2019
India win by 203 runs!

Edged, and taken by Wriddhiman Saha! Kagiso Rabada is dismissed by Mohammed Shami, and that wins it for India. The hosts win by 203 runs, taking an early 1-0 lead in the three match series, after bundling South Africa for 191.

13:36 (IST)06 Oct 2019
Rabada goes big

Kagiso Rabada is on, and despite the pressure, he is not one to go on his backfoot and try to see through the day. He took his chances, and hit a boundary and sent the ball over the boundary in another Ravindra Jadeja delivery. 10 runs off the over. SA are 176/9 after 61 overs.

13:26 (IST)06 Oct 2019
BOWLED!

The stumps have been uprooted, so who else? It's Mohammed Shami again, who brings back the smiles on the Visakhapatnam crowd and relaxes Virat Kohli a bit. A full-length ball packed with a lot of intensity, and it proved to be too much for Dane Piedt, who leaves after a brilliant 56. SA are 161/9 after 59.1 overs.

13:01 (IST)06 Oct 2019
Fifty for Piedt!

After maintaining his form of hitting Jadeja ruthlessly for a boundary in the previous over, Dane Piedt brought up his half-century off Rohit Sharma's delivery. He brought up his fifty in 86 balls, hitting eight fours and a six. SA are 149/8 after 52 overs.

12:51 (IST)06 Oct 2019
Tailenders with some hope

Five fours from the last four overs. Eight runs from the last over. Dane Piedt on 40* and Senuran Muthusamy on 32*. The visitors are putting up quite the fight from an impossible position, where their spinners are playing like seasoned batsmen. Their partnership has hiked upto 68 runs already. SA are 138/8 after 48 overs.

12:41 (IST)06 Oct 2019
Second session underway

Two maiden overs restart the proceedings after the players have had their hearty meal. Dane Piedt and Senuran Muthusamy continue their resistance, before the latter hits a boundary to score the first runs in the second session, which brings up their 50-run partnership. SA are 121/8 after 45 overs.

11:50 (IST)06 Oct 2019
And it's lunch-time!

After the morning collapse, South Africa have been given some false hope by Dane Piedt and Senuran Muthusamy's brilliant 47-run ninth-wicket partnership. At lunch, India need two more wickets, while South Africa still need a massive 278 runs. SA are 117/8 after 42 overs.

11:35 (IST)06 Oct 2019
Lunch is postponed

Lunch is postponed for another 15 minutes. If a ninth wicket falls in those 15 minutes, then lunch will be further delayed by half an hour. Meanwhile, SA are 112/8 after 40 overs.

11:27 (IST)06 Oct 2019
Hundred up for Proteas

Dane Piedt looks on fire, exacting revenge on Ravindra Jadeja for that devastating over. He has hit three boundaries and one six in the last two overs he has faced the spinner. With Piedt's maximum, this Test broke the record of featuring most sixes in a match, with 36*. SA are 104/8 after 37 overs.

11:13 (IST)06 Oct 2019
South Africa's spin-defence

Senuran Muthusamy and Dane Piedt have been quite resilient ever since that Ravindra Jadeja masterclass. They have put up a 12-run partnership already, and are looking to hang on till lunch. SA are 82/8 after 33 overs.

10:55 (IST)06 Oct 2019
TWIN LBWs!

And this is getting quite embarassing for the visitors, as the Proteas are down to eight now, with both Vernon Philander and Keshav Maharaj are dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja now. Although he couldn't get the hattrick, what an over by the spinner, a maiden and three wickets. SA are 70/8 after 27 overs.

10:50 (IST)06 Oct 2019
CAUGHT AND BOWLED!

Aiden Markram was the last ray of hope for South Africa with him hitting boundaries, and keeping the run-counter ticking, but alas, he is dismissed too. Ravindra Jadeja comes back into attack, and the batsman just lifts his ball straight towards the spinner. He departs for 39. SA are 70/6 after 26.1 overs.

10:34 (IST)06 Oct 2019
AND AGAIN!

Mohammed Shami hates the stumps, and he is clearly showing it. He bowls Quinton de Kock on his second ball of the innings itself, and sends the wicketkeeper back on a duck. All hopes lost for the visitors? Going from bad to worse for the visitors. SA are 60/5 after 23.1 overs.

10:29 (IST)06 Oct 2019
BOWLED! AGAIN!

Mohammed Shami woke up on the right side of the bed today, as he has uprooted the stumps yet again! And this time, it's the captain, Faf du Plessis, who is sent back to the dressing room for 13. South Africa feeling lost here, wth all their hopes on Quinton de Kock now. SA are 52/4 after 21.5 overs.

10:18 (IST)06 Oct 2019
du Plessis offers stability

After the initial implosion with the fall of two quick wickets, with the arrival of Faf du Plessis, South Africa have steadied the ship somewhat. Although Aiden Markram went for the maximum, the initial overs after Temba Bavuma's departure were quite shaky, but now they have racked 18 runs from the last four overs. Markram is on 26*, while the captain is on 9*. SA are 48/3 after 20 overs.

09:43 (IST)06 Oct 2019
BOWLED HIM!

And Temba Bavuma's off for a duck, which concludes his rather disappointing Test match. South Africa are dwindling and it's not looking great at all. Mohammed Shami claims the wicket of the 29-year-old, which brought him down to his knees. SA are 20/3 after 11.3 overs.

09:38 (IST)06 Oct 2019
WICKET!

And who else? It's Ravichandran Ashwin again, with his 350th Test wicket and in what style, just dislodged the bails of Theunis de Bruyn. The crowd's frenzy and it's all smiles in the Indian camp. de Bruyn departs for 10. SA are 19/2 after 10.5 overs.

09:34 (IST)06 Oct 2019
Off to a flyer!

Aiden Markram starts the day being on 3*, facing Mohammed Shami. It's a bright sunny day in Visakhapatnam, and so it begins... with a confident single off the first ball itself. de Bruyn follows it up with the first boundary of the day to third man. Seven runs from the over. SA are 18/1 after 10 overs.

09:23 (IST)06 Oct 2019
SA need 384 more runs to win

Dean Elgar's departure would add to the headache of Faf du Plessis, but everyone knows that on his day, Aiden Markram can make a mark, and that's what the Proteas would be expecting of him. With a stable morning session, and with the likes of Temba Bavumba, Quinton de Kock, du Plessis himself, South Africa still have an outside chance of chasing the target and taking a lead in the series.

In Sharma’s shots, shades of Tendulkar

Of late there has been a little bit of Sachin Tendulkar about Rohit Sharma’s batting. Not in the batting style but in the approach, even to the extent of Rohit’s shot selection. On Saturday, he became the first Indian opener after Sunil Gavaskar in 1978 to have scored two hundreds in the same Test. | READ MORE |

Stat attack!

Keshav Maharaj conceded the third-highest runs in a single Test match after the conclusion of India's second innings, having conceded 318 runs in Visakhapatnam, behind Australia's Jason Krejza (358) against India in 2008, and West Indies' Tommy Scott (374) against England in 1929.

Looking back on the fourth day

Rohit Sharma lead the charge for India yet again on the fourth day of the first Test against South Africa at Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam on Saturday.
