IND vs NZ 2nd Test Day 3 Highlights: New Zealand beat India by 113 runs to win series 2-0 in Pune

Jadeja caught at long-on and India bowled out for 245. New Zealand has got their series win and has created history here. The wounds are will be still raw for Rohit Sharma and Co. at this point but they have to go back and reassess there is no escaping this. While the Indian skipper did bag some amazing results as captain this one is a record he would have not wanted to bag. Congratulations to Tom Latham who has taken in charge for the Test group for the first time in a full-time role for this series. And most importantly Mitchell Santner who was boxed in a white-ball spinner comes in and bags 13 wickets and plays a crucial role in memorable victory.

Akash Deep departed, he got off the mark after 23 deliveries, and then he whacked one straight down the throat of Rachin who was standing 3/4th way the boundary. The ball was travelling and it was a good catch. Jasprit Bumrah has walked into the middle and now its only a matter of time. Bumrah's defence against spinners has been average to be polite. At least now Jadeja might look to go on full T20 mode. There is no point in hanging around and hoping that Bumrah would do the same at this point in time. New Zealand almost there. 

The pitch is exploding now. The ball is turning square. India has batted better compared to first innings but 359 was always too far to get. It needed a 100 from someone and a couple of big partnerships at least to give themselves a chance which did not happen. Everything that had to go wrong went wrong after the lunch break. Rishabh Pant's run out was an absolute mood dampener to the crowd and the confidence of the team. Then Kohli got one kept low and since that, it was only a matter of time. This is usually how India beats opposition but today they are at the receiving end of their own medicine.

Akash Deep is in the middle and given the situation there is no point in hanging around for both Jadeja and Akash Deep. Just take on the bowling and whatever comes off will come of. There is no point in just fending each ball because one delivery will come with your name on it. And given the way Santner has been bowling it has been difficult for the top-order batters themselves to deal with him for Akash Deep it will be even a bigger ask. Still no signs of pace back into the attack from New Zealand. Maybe they can give O Rourke a spell against Akash Deep.

Santner floats one outside off-stump and the batter Ashwin drives the ball. In the previous delivery, he got away with one on a similar delivery but this time he manages to get an edge get himself out. Now it seems like it is only a matter of time before India will be bowled out here. Santner has now picked up 13 wickets in this game and he has now bettered the legend of Steve O Keefe. Akash Deep has come into the middle. Poor fellow did not have much to do with the ball but had all the time in the world to display his batting capabilities here. 

India needs to rethink their batting approach after this game. They cannot continue to bat like they did especially when wicket is offering something and in any conditions where first innings runs are at a premium. In Bengaluru, because of the conditions, the collapse is understandable but here it needed a better approach. Especially after a few wickets fell early at the top the likes of Pant, Sarfaraz and even Kohli could have approached it better given New Zealand only got to 259 which is a decent total but not a match-winning first innings score even on this wicket. 

Things have been going at a sedate pace here since Tea. India chipping away with singles here and there New Zealand too at this point seems to be ok with what's happening. There is not much to be flustered about for both sides as the result seems to be inevitable. The crowd has gone really silent. India has been very strategic about the transition however, the flaws have come out in this series. More than flaws it seems like India has taken New Zealand as an afterthought which is costing and despite the loss of credit to the selectors for not changing the squad as much for the Border Gavaskar Trophy. 

Ashwin and Jadeja are batting for India in the middle. One positive thing for India is these two have dug India out of trouble many times out of this situation. However, today it requires a different skill. Not only technically but mentally. Ashwin has been around some of the famous victories and he will have the astuteness of how to go about things from here. If they need inspiration India does not even have to go too much back against Bangladesh when India was in a deep hole these two combined to build a massive partnership which later helped in them end up as winners in the game. 

India is starring down the inevitable here. It seems like only a matter of time. If someone is the most ultra-positive cricket fan of India he would want them to bat till the evening and come to bat tomorrow as a moral victory.

We have got to the Tea Break here on Day 3. The session coming up might be the final one of this Test match. New Zealand in this break will realise what has unfolded in that session and how close they are to making history. As per India, there will be frustrations and a long silence. Yes, these runs could have been chased but let's be honest India was out of the game from yesterday noon. Mitchell Santner did done exceptionally well in this match and credit must got to New Zealand for selecting him and playing horses for chorses in this game. 

It is coming to an end for India now. Washington Sundar has departed the ball took a huge inside edge and looped up for short-leg to take a sharp catch. Jadeja and Ashwin are in the middle and given the way this pitch is playing here it is hard to see how India will survive the day. Even it is hard to assess how good Indian batting has been. As the pitch is turning well New Zealand has runs on board and Mitchell Santner has plenty of confidence up their sleeve to get wickets. They need to get back to the drawing board and reassess things before Mumbai Test.

Santner cleans up Sarfaraz. The batter for some reason tried to play defensively and eventually got a jaffer. Things are happening now on the surface it seems like it is only a matter of time before India gets bowled out here. While Jaiswal was batting things looked possible now everything is looking gloomy. New Zealand is getting closer to doing the unthinkable. It is not very soon India will play their next home series this will hurt them irrespective of what happens in Mumbai the first two Tests have been horror show both in batting, bowling, and Rohit's captaincy as well. 

We have 30 minutes to go for the Tea break and it is New Zealand's session. Even if India does not manage to lose a wicket in the remaineder of the time left this session. Once again as said many times India needs to get partnerships here. That has been a problem for them. As long as partnerships coming it will put pressure on New Zealand and make sure they have to give rest to Santner for a bit and bring in some other bowler where Indian batters can score a few runs. Mitchell Santner gets his 11th wicket and it is Kohli. Yes, it is the biggest wicket in this order arguably and more than the wicket it is how it happened that will send nerves across the dressing room. The ball kept low and hit the pads and Santer appealed and the umpire gave it out. Kohli reviewed and it was the umpire's call on the wicket's hitting. The odd ball is now starting to keep low as well which the batters now coming to bat have to be wary of. Unlike Jaiswal and Pant who danc down the track on an odd ball and play odd unorthodox shots both these will play in the book shots with some healthy strike rotation. However, having said that no matter how they come what matters India keeps piling on runs. The have to also remember that Santner has been bowling from the morning and he will be required to take a break at some point in the innings which is a time when India can do damage and put further pressure on New Zealand. It is a water break during here noon session. Kudos to India's fight back in the session however, New Zealand are back in the game and are favourites to win this one as well. But one thing in India's favour is New Zealand only has one bowler who is looking threatening and the remaining three are looking like they can be attacked but the rate it which Santner is picking his wickets is what is concerning. He picked up seven wickets within 20 overs in the first innings and now has picked up three wickets within three overs. Also Latham has made sure that there is no strike rotation from batters when they are facing Latham. (After 26 overs IND 141/4)

All the nightmares for India in this chase manifested in the last 10 minutes. First, it was Jaiswal who got a good delivery and he edged one to slip. And then Rishabh Pant got himself runout. A run that could have been avoided. India has now lost two wickets in no time and now it is looking grim. They have lost three wickets since the start of the session. This was the passage where India needed to put its foot on the gas and take the game to New Zealand but quite the opposite has happened. The tempo of India has been terrific in this chase. Especially the way Jaiswal is batting. Anyone not named Santner is taking a proper pummeling especially Ajaz Patel who is playing as the main spinner in the side had a poor first innings and even in this innings he is going for plenty. The attacking innings from Jaiswal also has made sure that Tom Latham spreads his fields for him and give an easy single away. Meanwhile he has attacking fields to Kohli but he too is looking untroubled to any bowler apart from Santner. If India can negate that it would put a massive dent in the confidence of New Zealand. India in no time has got themselves to 112 here. But it is not done here there is still a lot of work that needs to be done and most of the runs and attacking have happened from Jaiswal. It is an innings like Latham but much quicker. He needs to build a 150-200-run partnership somewhere down the order with someone to create panic in the New Zealand camp. Virat Kohli has walked in and he is looking positive and the emphasis as much as is on attacking batting it should also be on building the partnership and facing the spinners according to the matchups and dealing them tactically. Shubman Gill went onto back foot and tried to work the ball on the leg side however, the ball from Santner pitched on the middle and leg straightened a bit to take the thick outside edge of Shubman Gill which the slip took. Timely wicket that for New Zealand just when it felt like India was getting back into the game Santner struck it is the ninth wicket in the game. It increasingly seems like an individual battle between Sundar and Santner and who can pick most wickets in the match. Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips have started after the break for New Zealand. This will be a different challenge for Santner. Yes, he bowled exceptionally well in the first innings however, he doesn't have the same experience as the Indian spinners to bowl 40-45 overs in a Test match. As a result,  he may start bowling deliveries that are inaccurate and let batters get a few boundaries away and release the pressure. Tom Latham needs to find a way that he does not completely ignore his seamers but does get them back for 3-4 hour spells from time to time to keep his spinners fresh. (After 14.3 overs IND 92/1)

It is going to be a fascinating session this one. India will go all guns blazing and New Zealand will have to come up with a counter plan. This might be the session that will probably decide how long this game will go on.

That's lunch. India has managed to get a good start here.  However, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. Yashasvi Jaiswal has played some crisp shots and has raced away to 46. However, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done. India needs a couple of massive partnerships to get closer to the target and the intent has been heartwarming to watch. As per Rohit Sharma, it has been another failure for him in this home series. Regardless of Rohit's wicket India has managed to score over six runs in this innings so far. This has been a bit taste of their own medicine for the New Zealand bowlers. In this series the Kiwi batters have been brutal against the Indian spinners and today India is giving back some. Once again it is not that New Zealand has got themselves to massive totals in both innings they have only managed to get moderate scores and it is the Indian batting which has capitulated poorly against the likes of Mitchell Santner in the first innings. Rohit tried to come down the track and tried to fend off the ball however, the slower one from Santner took off the surface and Rohit was beaten for the bounce and got the inside edge straight to the short leg. Santner has now picked up eight wickets in this game. This is an extraordinary start from the bowler once again. Even if India dreams of chasing this total the biggest threat they have to get over here is Santner. Latham has turned to both his spin options early in the piece here. Which is expected. The way India has started here has made Latham think about something. We have seen in the first Test in the second innings especially when India applied pressure on the New bowls they succumbed to the pressure and until the second new ball came around it was all one-way traffic. Today they have the new ball and one good thing for India is New Zealand had to deal with the tougher part of the day India will get better conditions for the remaining two sessions and they will be hoping to make the most of it. It will be interesting to see how Rohit approaches this. Tim Southee has had the better of Rohit already and the Indian skipper is also short of runs. He needs to mix caution with aggression here. He cannot afford to go all guns blazing since it is not 150-180 India are chasing it is 359 runs which is a massive total. it is not the highest total India would have ever chased in home conditions if they do manage to get it but the pitch here is quite difficult. Yashasvi Jaiswal has made his intentions clear in the first over. The ball was in the slot from Yashasvi Jaiswal has smacked it for a six the bowler pulled it back the next one and Jaiswal cut it for another boundary. This is how it seems like India is going to chase here. It will be entertaining from the neutral perspective whatever the result maybe. Glenn Phillips might now go all guns blazing against the Indian bowlers while it might create opportunities it may also take the game away from India quickly. He is a very dangerous player Phillips he has a knack for playing some exceptional knocks in T20Is and he might bring the same game here. He has serious power in his forearms and even despite mis-timing he can send the ball across the line. What would India back themselves to chase here? Ideally, it should have been less than 200 but given now we are here India might look to restrict New Zealand to around 370 which is a lot of runs. But this wicket is still playing decently. It is not exploding but the odd ball is turning viciously it will take a couple of excellent knocks to give themselves a chance at least. Well, Jadeja did not have a wicket in this game and within 10 minutes he had two. Santner whacked one down the ground and finally, the in-out fields of Rohit played diffidence as Santner was caught at the long-on boundary. New Zealand have now lost two wickets in quick succession they are 340 ahead which is quite a big total. Most importantly they still have Phillips at the crease who can change gears and get into T20 mode at any point in the time. R Jadeja gets Blundell. After bowling two deliveries which turned away one eventually came back with the arm and there was a gap between the bat and pad of Blundell and the ball went through to hit the middle stump. Finally a wicket for Jadeja in this Test match most importantly they have broken the partnership between Phillips and Blundell. Santner has walked into the middle. He did look decent in the first innings with the bat and everyone would have seen his bowling heroics. The confidence might rub on him and Santner with his white ball acumen can hurt India big time here. (After 61.2 overs IND 232/6)

This will be the best session for India to bowl. There will be some moisture in the surface and spinners will get some help and as the Day goes on things might go a bit flat. Which is what India would want exactly. They want to bowl out New Zealand by lunch time today and hope to comeback at noon in better batting conditions and hope to get a score and batters get themselves in. However, having said that India has started exactly the way they ended yesterday. They have come up with mostly the same tactics of bowling quicker through the air and Rohit is opting for in-out fields. This poor from India again. (After 59 overs IND 227/5)

Well, two overs into the game, Ashwin had already created an opportunity. The ball pitched in and took the edge of Blundell. However, Rishabh Pant went in with the angle of the ball. The edge meant he was in no position to take the catch, and the ball went in between the slip fielder and keeper. India did create the early opportunity but once again due to a silly error from Pant they could not make the most of it. Jadeja is bowling from the other end. It’s a great feeling to put ourselves in a position of winning a Test match here. It doesn’t look easy and we knew partnerships were key, glad we could perform well today. We spoke about trying to find the right speed on this wicket, as the day went along the slower ones started to spin and it was about trying to put it in the right areas. (On bowling wide of the crease) Just tried to change the angles, induce the play and miss and vary it out. I watched Washi go wide of the crease earlier, tried to do the same. (On performing well in India) I guess the pitches spin, which is nice. We don’t get that back home. The pitches here provide some good assistance for the spinners. I think the pitch is doing a little bit, it is not easy but we spoke about trying to fire shots and not sit there trying to scratch it out. On the flip side, I think when we bowl in the second innings, India will also try to place some shots. We just need to be accurate.

With the natural progression of the pitch, it's going to turn more. Cracks have widened slightly more. Looks more abrasive. If you don't have the sweep in your armoury, what you need to do is step out. Santner has a cluster on a good length and you can't deal with that from the crease.
