India vs New Zealand Highlights, 1st Test Day 2: NZ 180/3 Rachin Ravindra and Daryl Mitchell unbeaten at stumps in Bengaluru

That's it the day has ended it has been New Zealand's day hands down. Apart from the toss everything has gone their way the lead is now 134 runs and they would be looking to double that tomorrow and push India completely out of the game. As per India, they would be hoping to bundle out remaining New Zealand batting for around 70-80 runs. And as per the third thing which is the pitch it is starting to take a bit of turn and there might be another day and a half in it before it starts to spit dust and turn square. Mohammed Siraj has taken the ball, not Bumrah, and did a decent job. The batters looked a tad bit uncomfortable but nothing impactful as such has happened. The umpires and batters have not yet given any objection to the light and as we update Rohit has now brought in Jasprit Bumrah into the attack we might have another over left the way the light has dipped after this and India would be hoping Bumrah will deliver a magic delivery before the close of play. It is getting dark here we still have 10 minutes left in the Day's play and there are roughly about 15 overs left in the day. There is an option of extending till 5:45 PM which is highly unlikely to happen. We are nearing the end of Day 2's play. Mitchell and Ravindra too seem to be playing risk-averse cricket rotating strikes respecting the good one. And India too seems to be waiting for the mistake to happen rather than trying something. May be the thought of Bumrah might cross Rohit's mind before the close but given the light situation umpires might not allow it. (After 47.1 overs NZ 175/3)

The turn has got prominent in this evening session as each over has passed by. India has three spinners up their ranks who will come more and more into the game as the days go on. On the other hand, New Zealand has to make the most of this first innings with the bat because, given the way this wicket has played here, they have to rely on Ajaz Patel to do most of the job in the third innings as the likes of Tim Southee, Matt Henry and O Rourke will not get the same help as they did today. As we have seen many times before one wicket brings two and so it did for India. In the battle between Ashwin and Conway, the former had the last laugh. Conway tried to reverse Ashwin missed the ball completely and got bowled. It was a poor shot selection from the Kiwi opener. Century was there for the taking from his end and there was ample time but his intention to counterattack has caused his downfall and late in the day's play gave India a sniff. If the hosts do manage to pick one more wicket before the end of Day's play they will believe they can make a comeback into the game tomorrow. (After 40 overs NZ 158/3)

Rishab Pant has walked off the field with an injury. It was Ravindra Jadeja who hit him on the leg in the unprotected part. Hope he is alright and will be well soon enough. Meanwhile,, Dhruv Jurel has come in as a replacement. As per the bowling while Jadeja is bowling well from one end Kuldeep is now looking a little tired. He is bowling some gentle looseners. It might be time Rohit considers another bowling change here. Two left-handers are in the middle and there is still about an hour's play left it might be not a bad ploy for Rohit to bring in Ashwin and give him a spell here. (After 38.5 overs NZ 153/2)

Will Young departs. The batter tried to sweep and got the top edge which Kuldeep Yadav picked at fine-leg inside the ring. Once again that extra bit of bounce did the trick. To be fair Jadeja did bowl well thus far and he deserved that wicket. Young on the other hand would be kicking himself he did all the hard work and in the end, threw it away with a lame shot. Rachin Ravindra has walked into the middle. He is another premium batter of the New Zealand side and all eyes will be on him on how he will go about his innings here. The pitch has started to turn here a little. Not a lot an odd ball is gripping a bit which kind of indicates why Rohit wanted to bat first however, it still feels like the decision of the Indian skipper has come as a consequence of him imagining what might happen on Day 5 instead of what is ahead of him. As Murali Karthik mentioned many times during the commentary it is a "self-induced torture" from the Indian team. And now despite the turn the lack of runs dropped catches and better conditions to bat are increasingly making the decision to bat first even worse from the Indian skipper. Yes, New Zealand has got the lead and running away with the game and it is hard to pick holes in bowling. But one thing that has gone wrong from the Indian end is they have been giving away too many freebies which is unlike them. Usually, India tends to keep a batter at one end and squeeze the life out of them to get even a single. However, today they have bowled some beautiful deliveries but in the midst, they have given away hit-me balls which made it hard to put any pressure. Having said that like Kuldeep Yadav, Jadeja is looking in good rhythm but it is the same thing he needs to string a 2-3 over spell where he doesn't give away a boundary.  which Kuldeep has failed thus fur and so did Bumrah and Ashwin. India has burnt their second review here. Will Young tried to sweep a ball from Ravindra Jadeja which hit the thigh guard. Both keeper and bowler appealed intensely and the decision was sent upstair by Rohit however, the ball missed the leg stump. It is desperation again from India. Will Young has looked organized here thus far and is playing each ball on its merit. His getting a good 80 here will add another thorn to the already heavily wounded Indian flesh. Rohit too seems to be running out of ideas and just waiting for something to happen here. (After 29.5 overs NZ 110/1)

This has been an exceptional day for New Zealand. They have come to the Indian tours before and in red-ball cricket and have taken absolute pasting both at the hands of Indian batters and Indian spinners. But for this game,, they don't have to worry about both. It has been their day and it increasingly is feeling like their game to lose. The pitch too has changed color and the sun is shining bright and conditions are looking very good for batting. The ball too is now 30 overs old and given all the rain it is hard to see if either of Bumrah or Siraj will get any reverse swing.  (After 27.3 overs NZ 107/1)

Kuldeep Yadav is getting nice revolutions on the ball and he also got his pace and length right for the conditions. Will Young especially here is unable to pick him. However, as long as they don't give him wickets it will frustrate India a bit more. Bringing on Bumrah immediately after the Tea also shows Rohit's desperation for a wicket. Ravindra Jadeja is the one bowler who has been not used yet by Rohit Sharma, Jadeja might be the next in line from Bumrah's end if a wicket doesn't fall sooner.  (After 25 overs NZ 90/1)

Bumrah and Kuldeep have taken the ball from either end for India pace and spin combination might be the right way to go at this point for hosts. The sun is also out and it is nothing like the conditions in the morning. It is going to be hard work for the Indian bowlers it is not like New Zealand bowlers who just had to put the ball in the right areas to pick wickets. Both Bumrah and Kuldeep and whoever follows after them need to keep hitting the right lengths over after over bowl tidily and induce mistakes with some clever field sets and some tactical bowling changes from Rohit Sharma here. Kumble in Jio's show called for 3-4 wickets even if India gets them they will still be way behind. India just need to treat it as the first innings bowl with discipline and try and restrict New Zealand. Once that is done batters can respond in the second innings

India's forgettable first-day first-session performance in a cricket match at home. There were a few smiles as India walked back for Tea break which would have been due to the wicket of Latham however, there is still a lot of work to be done in the game. A mention of Devon Conway who has batted splendidly so far. He found the right balance between attack and defence and is piling on his runs. India especially with regards to Ashwin has to come up with a proper tactic as that end has been leaking runs which India cannot afford to in this game. As per New Zealand Conway will look to build another partnership with Young and pile further misery on India. 

There is the wicket for India, Kuldeep Yadav did trouble Latham in his first over however, did not get the reward but this time it was plumb as Latham missed a straight one. He played for the natural delivery of Kuldeep the one turning away from let-hander but this delivery did not. The on-field umpire once again did not give it out and the decision was sent upstairs by Rohit and there were three reds on ball tracking. Much needed breakthrough for India and Will Young has walked into the middle. India would be hoping to pick one more before Tea break which is just a few minutes away.  (After 18.5 overs NZ 78/1)

Kuldeep Yadav has been brought into the attack and he appealed for an LBW against Tom Latham however, the on-field umpire did not give it out and Rohit Sharma decided to send it upstairs where it was seen the wickets were missing. India lost a review 15 overs into the innings and ticked another what could go wrong box. Seems like Rohit too is getting a little desperate here with the way things are unfolding here and India does need a tea break so that they can assess. The Indian body language is getting flatter here as New Zealand batters are piling on the runs. The partnership between Latham and Conway has gone past 50. The wicket looks excellent for batting. The longer this partnership grows irrespective of the pedigree and experience of this team the shoulders will start dropping. The forecast too for the remaining days does have some rain but given the way India batted in their first innings in all probability, there might be enough time for New Zealand to force a result. Rohit has been tested a few times against England earlier this year however, there have never been occasions where his side has been completely outplayed. But this is the first time India has been completely out of it so far. It will be interesting to see how he responds from here. New Zealand have also started very well here and especially they are going after Ashwin. He cannot go too attacking here and neither can he become too defensive. Testing couple of days coming up for Rohit Sharma as captain not that his captaincy will help India win or anything but the way he deals against adversities as Test captain will be one to watch out for. Ashwin has come into the attack and he is bowling a little quicker here in the air. The variation of the slower one might come as a surprise. Conway thus far has been up to the mark the way he dealt with Ashwin he is trying to sweep and reverse sweep Ashwin and counter his deliveries. It seems like a tactic from him to unsettle Ashwin here. Everything New Zealand is doing with the bat is also working for them and the pitch also seems to have become significantly flatter and the sun is out. India is increasingly falling further behind the game as each over passes by they need to pick a wicket sooner rather than later here. (After 10 overs NZ 36/0)

The odd ball is bouncing here from the end Bumrah is bowling indicating that there is still some dampness on the surface. Conway has been hit a few times on the fingers and is getting some treatment at the moment. For all the things said and done New Zealand has not lost a wicket and apart from hitting the fingers India has not looked too threatening either. It is going to be a long batting from New Zealand for India no matter how much score they get here. As we update R Ashwin has been brought into the attack from Rohit Sharma. From New Zealand's perspective, the game is in their hands to win. All that is needed now from here on is a batter scoring a solid ton and a couple of partnerships through the order to get them around the 350 mark and get a lead of around 200-250 that will give them a significant advantage. Also, bat long enough that the pitch starts to turn a bit and force India into a corner. Apart from the toss New Zealand has done everything right here now it's about not letting India back into this game and just do the basics right to get a lead in a match series. Indian seamers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj are more of hit the deck of the bowlers which might count against them on this surface. The New Zealand seamers apart from O Rourke the remaining two Southee and Henry have pitched the ball up and got the rewards in fact it is their natural length. Indian seamers too need to get the ball up. However, to contradict the point both Bumrah and Siraj do not have the luxury of morning moisture to work with hence the ball floated up there might be drive me ball with ease but given the mess the Indian team has got themselves into it might be a worth the risk to pick a few wickets. Jasprit Bumrah has taken the new ball and started with a few losners which the Kiwi pacers did not give in the first innings. India also needs to be wary of not over-trying here. There is enough in the surface yes, but it is not a 46 all-out surface. India needs to be practical about how much they can get New Zealand under. It is damage control for them. And one more challenge for Rohit Sharma is how he uses his two pacers here. He can't over-bowl them or under-bowl them in this opening spell. One advantage he has is he has Ashwin in his arsenal who is very good with the new ball especially if there is some dampness in the surface. (After 1.4 overs NZ 6/0)

India's misery comes to an end as Matt Henry picked up a five-wicket haul. Kuldeep tried to nudge the ball towards the third-man region but was caught at gully by sub-fielder Michael Bracewell. It is not a rocket science to figure out what has unfolded here in Bengaluru but the disbelief among the fans on the ground and many following would be that it happened in India to India. It is the lowest score ever from the home team in their backyard. Maybe this is the kind of effort and this is the number of mistakes that it takes for India to lose a Test match. Anyways New Zealand's batting will be coming up next do stay with us the batting effort from them will decide India's fate in the game. 

Kuldeep is holding his end up but it is a shame that there is no other batter to play with him from the other end. And credit must be given to the New Zealand bowlers they have been given the conditions on a platter to succeed but they had to put the ball in the right areas and so they did. The first 30-40 minutes of play started with India playing and missing a few and things felt like India would get away like they always do at home. But once Rohit Sharma fell the team management decided to alter the batting order and try a few things and the cricketing gods decided to change their script of Indian home dominance hence here we are. Since the last update, India has lost two more. First, it was Rishabh Pant who fell to Matt Henery and then O Rourke picked up Jasprit Bumrah. It is increasingly looking like it was a poor decision from India to win the toss and opt to bat first and guess what India have picked their side to bowl on the final day and has three spinners in their attack. It is hard to see how India will recover from this batting effort unless New Zealand puts on a batting performance as bad as this. Ashwin came in and Ashwin went. Matt Henry bowled a ball on the top of the off-stump Ashwin defended with the straight bat and the gully fielder took a simple catch. India has lost the seventh wicket and that is the worst possible start they could have after the break. Kuldeep has walked into the middle and now the bulk of the scoring has to be done from Pant and things might speed up in this game. 100 looks way out of hands for India. It increasingly seems like a very poor decision from Rohit Sharma to bat first in the morning. (After 25 overs IND 39/7) 

It is hard to say what to expect from this session. India would be hoping not to get bowled out and take it to the evening session and New Zealand would be hoping to wrap up India within an hour and get into batting and completely nullify the advantage India thought they were getting to bowl in the final innings with a score in the bag.

While there was a low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal that caused widespread rainfall in some parts of India, the IMD officials have clarified that the weather in Bengaluru would not be affected. Jadeja goes at the stroke of Lunch another one down for India. They have lost six wickets in a session. Rishabh Pant is still batting and Ashwin will come after the lunch break. While it did not seem like much of a risk at the time to bat first given the way the first session has panned out here questions will be fired on Rohit Sharma on the reasoning behind the decision. While India are a dominant force at home it is hard to see how they are going to come back from here after losing six wickets. KL Rahul has walked into the middle he relatively had a good outing against Bangladesh in Kanpur but it demanded a different kind of innings from him today it requires a different one from him here in fact quiet the opposite. He needs to suck in the pressure and take India to somewhat of a good total. Given the way things have unfolded this morning even getting to three figure mark as a team seems far-fetched however, New Zealand would be aware of Indian batting depth and have seen what even the likes of Ashwin and Jadeja can do coming down the order. O Rourke seems like a promising prospect for the New Zealand team here. Not only has he been able to extract more bounce than Henry and Southee but also quicker than them which is bothering the Indian batters. There have been comparisons about him with Kyle Jamison but O Rourke seems to be quicker. It might be a good find for the New Zealand team as there have been occasions in the subcontinent or with wickets that are on the flatter side their bowling attack have struggled to make that point of difference. However, it does come with a question will he be fit enough to be a regular for a long period? As we update Rourke picks Jaiswal (After 20.4 overs IND 31/4)

The playing and missing continues from India. One thing about the SG ball is unlike the Kookaburra which offers next to nothing after 30 overs the seam remains prominent keeping the bowlers in the game. And given the cloudy conditions,, the ball is still doing plenty and there seems to be a wicket around the corner. In fact if not for Glenn Phillips' dropped sitter of Pant India would have been four down. There is no way out of it for these two Indian young batters but to survive and get through this difficult phase as things are going to get better in the noon and evening session. India needs a bit of stability here more than anything. It was a gutsy decision from Rohit to win the toss and opt to bat first and as expected New Zealand did get plenty of help but what was expected from the Indian batters was more application and respecting the situation instead they opted to counter-attack which is the modern way and lost their way. While Pant and Jaiswal are also known for their attacking play at this point they need to find the right balance between attack and defense and make sure there is constant exchange of strikes instead of one batter getting stuck at the end for too long. Southee and O Rourke have started after the break and the ball is seaming around. It is a timely break for both the teams as Indian batters have the opportunity to break the momentum of New Zealand and for the visitors,, the fast bowlers have had a breather and can operate longer with this relatively new ball. Also, something Latham can try is to bring Ajaz Patel into the game with India in trouble. There are two left-handers at the crease and when it does seam it will swing also given the attacking nature of Pant and Jasiwal against left-arm spin it might be a gamble worth taking for Latham. Virat Kohli made a surprising return to the Test batting order at number three after an eight-year absence. This occurred during the first Test match against New Zealand in Bengaluru. However, his comeback was short-lived as he was dismissed for a duck by Kiwi pacer William O'Rourke. (Read more)

Well, the drizzle has come and India would definitely be happier of the two sides because of it. And New Zealand fast bowlers too will get a bit of a breather and comeback fresh to bowl another spell with a relatively new ball and gloomy conditions. We will be right back with further updates. 

We have reached the first water break and it is New Zealand all over India. They have hit the right lengths for the conditions. They have kept at and probed the Indian batters and have got the results. India have dug themselves here into a deep hole which will take more than a counterattacking knock to get them out. This wicket will get better for batting as the game goes on however, India needs to have top-order batters to make use of the conditions to score runs later on. Rishabh Pant comes in and plays a reverse-sweep which is what you expect him to do in this situation. Not orthodox but he will try and find his method to counterattack New Zealand's bowling. Jaiswal at the other end has been watchful and might now get further into the groove and wait till the noon session to see if the wicket gets any better. Exceptional bowling from New Zealand new ball bowlers  have done the job for skipper Tom Latham. From here on it is all about how the New Zealand skipper keeps the pressure intact and rotates bowlers and not let India getaway. (After 12 overs IND 13/3)

Virat Kohli who has come at three has departed now. O Rourke bowled a ball that jagged back sharply and Kohli facing him for the first time did not see that coming as bowler had set him up nicely with balls going away. The ball took an edge and brushed the thigh pad of Kohli to backward short-leg Glenn Phillips. New Zealand has picked up India's both premium batters and are now in top position in this game. Rohit Sharma tried to counter the disciplined bowling of New Zealand and walked down to Southee who bowled an inswing delivery which came in like a sharp off-break and hit the top of the middle stump of Rohit after he missed the contact to the ball. It must be said apart from his fireworks in Kanpur Rohit Sharma has looked out of his depth in Test cricket off late. He needs a couple of innings of substance against New Zealand to get some confidence and fix his feet moment before going to Australia or things might look even gloomy against the likes of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazelwood, and Pat Cummins. It has been a testing spell for the Indian openers. Usually, we do see seamers try to do too much and miss their mark when conditions are helpful to them but New Zealand fast bowlers have been spot on here. They have hit the right areas with subtle variations and are using all their experience. Luck has gone India's way here both Jaiswal and Rohit have had their share of it and now they need to capitalize on it. As per New Zealand, they would be praying to get one wicket here as there is a change in the batting order for India in the absence of Shubman Gill hence one might bring two and within no time they might expose Virat Kohli to a relatively new ball in cloudy conditions. Well, Rohit Sharma gets away with one there. It is the same old thing that he struggled against Bangladesh. He is on the backfoot trying to play the ball and a delivery from Matt Henry pitched on the middle stump moved slightly away and was hit on the top of the pad. The on-field umpire did not give it out and Latham decided to go upstairs and there was umpire call on wickets hitting for LBW. If at all Rohit needed an umpires call it was today. We are done with the first over and Tim Southee managed to get a lot of seam moment in it as expected. The pitch has been covered for the last three days. The New Zealand seamers will enjoy the conditions more than the Indian openers. On the flip side, the wicket has plenty of cracks on it and if New Zealand seamers have to make the most of this new ball once the ball gets old, India will have the best conditions to bat on and New Zealand have to bat last against Indian tweakers. We are having a slightly delayed start here in Bengaluru due to a lack of flood lights turning on. It is very dark out here. We must be starting in a couple of minutes. 

Virat Kohli has surpassed MS Dhoni to become the second-most capped Indian international cricketer. This milestone was achieved during the first Test match against New Zealand in Bengaluru. The outfield is simply superb. Great drainage. No reminiscence at all that it rained. It has been under the covers, which means it has a lot of dampness. It is quite cold when you touch it. When you touch it, it is slightly harder and it is dry underneath. New ball could nip around early on and the spinners could get some help as well
