India vs England 1st Test Day 5 Highlights: ENG beat IND by 5 wickets, take 1-0 lead in Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy

Smith blocks out the first ball and then goes for an agricultural swipe across the line, it goes off the bottom of the bat but goes to the boundary for four. Then he slog sweeps the next one high and mighty into the stands behind square leg for a six. 

Drinks taken for the last time in this Test match. Two singles off the first and fourth balls of that over from Siraj and then Root swings at a wide fullish ball to end it. It takes an edge and flies wide of gully, no luck whatsoever for India with those edges today. 

Root thus reaches 53 in 84, he has closed this off for England with Smith, unless Bumrah takes a hat-trick in the next over of course. And well, as it turns out, it is not Bumrah bowling the next over but Jadeja. Looks like India have accepted their fate. 

England 355/5, need 16 to win

India have taken the new ball, Mohammed Siraj is the man who returns to the attack first, not Bumrah. England don't need much and so India really do a bit of a miracle now to win this from here. 

England 349/5, need 22 to win

Root and Smith have done really well to dwindle their requirement down into the 20s now though. Gill has held back Bumrah and Siraj for whenever they manage to take the new ball but well, the target is now technically reachable within one gigantic over.  Root is on 45 off 77, Smith on 20 off 38. 

Jadeja gets an edge off the fifth ball of the 76th and it goes between slip and gully. That must be the 1000th time that an edge has gone through that region safely today, and for four as well. 

Root on 44 off 75 balls, Smith on 14 off 27. 

England 333/5

Jadeja's last ball in the 74th over, Smith meets with a big boom drive through mid-off and extra cover for four. He moves to 12 off 24, Root on 37 off 66. 

England 324/5, need 47 to win

Prasidh's first ball of the 71st over is pitched at a fuller side of good length. Root times it sweetly and sends it hurtling through covers for four. Those are all the runs that come in the over. 

Meanwhile, thing are brightening up around the ground, much better light and no rain anywhere close by. 

England 312/5, need 59 to win

At last, at long last, Jadeja gets a wicket for his efforts. Stokes reverse sweeps for the 1000th time third ball of the 68th over, takes a top edge and captain Gill takes the catch at short third. Captain Gill also celebrates that wicket like captain Kohli used to, roaring and jumping in the air before throwing the ball to the ground. Well, could this be another opening?

Prasidh Krishna replaces Bumrah, just a three-over burst for the latter. Prasidh gives width second ball, Stokes smashes it through cover point for four. Prasidh then induces the edge next ball but Nair was too wide of the keeper to take that catch, it runs behind for four. A conventional first slip would've pocketed it. Single next ball. 

Stokes on 32 off 49 at the end of that over, Root on 26 off 50. 

England 300/4, need 71 to win

Just a couple of minutes ago he saw the batters run two extra run off him because Thakur didn't feel like getting up very quickly. Now, fifth ball of the 66th, Root opens the face of the bat to steer the ball behind square. It is going straight to Nair and it looks like the ball just bounced off one of the drainage openings right in front of him and went past him. 

The noise has died out a bit from the Indians on the field as well, they can't afford to take the foot off the pedal at this point. 

England 291/4 in 66 overs, need 80 to win

That was agonisingly close though, a very eventful over indeed from Jadeja in the 62nd over. Root reverse sweeps the first ball past short third for four. Then a beauty from Jadeja, pitching on good length and straightening, it hits Root's pads. Gaffaney turns down the LBW appeal but Gill reviews with Jadeja and Pant looking very confident. Two reds but missing for wickets. Then another beauty from Jadeja, pitches on off and straightens to beat Root's edge and the off stump. Root whips the fourth ball to Thakur at mid-on, the fielder slips and is lethargic when getting up, allowing the batters to run three. Thakur gets a spray from Jadeja for that. Stokes reverse sweeps the last ball for a single. 

England 283/4 in 62 overs, need 88 to win

Bumrah falls in his follow through fourth ball of that over. Sits on the deck for a couple of seconds and gets up rubbing his knee. Nothing too serious, you can breath easy India fans. 

Now Jadeja to continue. 

Ravindra Jadeja bowled from the Rugby End after Thakur was done with that over and now here comes Bumrah. Root and Stokes got a single each from Jadeja in that over, it will be Stokes on strike to Bumrah now. 

Meanwhile, England's requirement is now below 100.

All right then, the players are back. Shardul Thakur to bowl the fourth ball of the 59th over, Stokes on strike. He is on 13 off 17 balls, Root on 14 off 31 balls 

England 269/4, need 102 to win

We should have gotten underway for the final session by now but the rain has caused a bit of a delay to the resumption. Covers have been taken off now though, including the hover cover over the pitch. 

The covers return halfway through the 59th over and so Shardul Thakur will have to finish it once they return.  Enough of a drizzle for the umpires to call for Tea about nine minutes earlier than what was earlier decided when the players returned from the previous rain break. Let's hope we will have on time resumption because this final session is going to be an absolute cracker. India have found a way to threaten these England batters without Bumrah or Siraj in the spell. Surely they are going to return sooner than later in the third session. 

At the same time, though, England have their two seniormost batters out there in Ben Stokes and Joe Root. These two have a task to do in order to chase down those 102 runs, India have a real task in hand in dislodging them and the rest of the batting lineup if they are to pull of a famous win here. The match is perfectly in the balance. Don't go anywhere!

England 269/4, need 102 to win

He has found a rough just around or outside off and Ben Stokes lived a wretched life throughout that over. Jadeja pitches it on that rough first ball, it spits up and just missed Stokes's gloves. Then Stokes goes for the reverse second ball, again in the rough and caught at short leg. India appeal, umpire shakes his head and Gill reviews. As it turned out, there was gap between bat and ball and it went solely off Stokes' triceps/shoulder. Two singles after that and then Stokes beaten on the rerverse sweep again, it hits Pant's hands. "Haath hi tod doge kya?" he asks Jadeja once he recovers. Stokes reverses the last ball as well and squeezes out a single.

Oh Shardul Thakur doing Shardul Thakur things! He strangles Harry Brook down the leg side and the man who made 99 in the first innings is gone for a golden duck! Shardul Thakur on a hat-trick. 

Out comes England captain Ben Stokes with the Indians suddenly full of life.

An incredible innings from Ben Duckett comes to an end and Headingley rightly stands and applauds. Thakur's third ball of the 55th over, Duckett tries to drive it. It goes low but in the air, substitute fielder Nitish Kumar Reddy dives low to his left and takes it.

Well the changes had to come, Jadeja had replaced Bumrah in that last over, now Thakur replaces Prasidh. Can he channel that bit of magic which led to him being called "Lord" and "Beefy"? Moreover, if it is going to be more of the same from him, then it would lead to some serious questions over whether he deserves to keep this spot in the next Test. 

Meanwhile, the ball has been changed again, largely due to how wet it had got. 

That is an unbelievable shot from the England opener and he moves into the 140s. Last ball of the 52nd pitched on middle and leg by Jadeja, Duckett reverse sweeps it flat and hard over point and it goes all the way. 

He moves to 143 off 158, Joe Root on 11 off 22. 

England 246/2 in 52 overs, need 125 to win

Well we can see KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant doing most of the hand waving to set the field up, Bumrah is doing a lot of team talks in the recent huddles that they have gotten into in between overs. India are now approaching desperation zone but they know that there is just that little something right now that they can use. 

Duckett and Root looking pretty good though. Duckett on 136 off 153 balls, Root on 10 off 21. 

England 238/2 in 51 overs, need 133 to win

No signs of the umpires taking the players off for now as Root and Duckett hit fours in that 48th over of Bumrah. Duckett looking absolutely unbeatable at the moment. He pulls the fifth ball between deep fine leg and deep backward square leg for four and reaches 125 in 145 balls. Root on seven off 11. 

England 224/2, need 147 to win

Gill (or Rahul) makes the change straightaway. Jadeja taken off and Bumrah brought back after that 45th over from Prasidh Krishna. Bumrah is steaming in from the football stand end, probably for the first time today. Root has fallen to Bumrah 10 times in this battle of titans over the years. 

England 211/2 in 45 overs, need 160 to win

Wow unplayable from Prasidh, nipping back in late and Pope chops on. Prasidh is the kind of bowler who likes to hit the deck hard but he seems to be getting something today only when he is pitching it up. He bowled the second ball short and Duckett pulled it for four. Then a leg bye and then Krishna pitches it on a good length on off stump, it swings right in to take Pope's inside edge and onto the leg stump. 

A long huddle after that and it is KL Rahul doing all the talking in it. He also does most of the field placements as the incomparable Joe Root walks in.

Yes, don't rub your eyes, it is an actual wicket that has fallen today and KL Rahul seems to be a little stunned by the catch that he took himself at first slip. Prasidh had just delivered a stinker of a short ball that stood up nicely for Crawley to pull for four previous ball. This time he bowls full and angles it into Crawley, the batter tried to drill it through cover, edged and it went to Rahul very quickly indeed. He reacted extremely well to take the catch around chest high to his right and then stands with a stunned and relieved look on his face. 

That opening stand ends on 188. Out comes Ollie Pope. India still have a mountain to climb but they have at least started that trek now.

"Covers coming off and sun too appears again," says Sandeep Dwivedi at Headingley. We can also see the Indian players making their way down once again. Shubman Gill has a smile on his face, he seems relaxed enough...

Anyone who has seen anything of Yashasvi Jaiswal in the field before this Test would be quite puzzled by what has happened thus far at Headingley. He has had an absolute mare in the first innings and now he has dropped a fairly straightforward catch to give Duckett a second chance just before the latter reached his century. But then he was known to be an incredible fielder in addition to being one of the most promising young batting talents in the world at the moment. We are seeing compilations of Jaiswal's good catches before this Test popping up on social media now.

"Not much rain... Already sky clearing and groundsman on stand by to uncover pitch," is what Sandeep Dwivedi is saying at Headingley. The broadcast did show a lot of breaks in the clouds and Stuart Broad in the gantry had called that a good sign. 

It has been drizzling on and off throughout this session and the umpires have done well to keep the players on so far. But it is too heavy now to continue and so off they go just before Siraj bowls the last over of the 41st over, on come the covers. 

Ben Duckett is on 105 off 126, Zak Crawley on 59 off 121

England 181/0, need 190 to win

Jadeja's fourth ball of the 40th over, Duckett reverse sweeps it to the boundary and punches the air. The helmet comes off after that. Sixth Test century for Duckett and it has come in just 120 balls. This is an innings that is sucking the life out of India at the moment. 

He takes a single at the end of that over, finishes it on 103 off 123 balls, Crawley on 57 off 119 balls. 

England 177/0 in 40 overs, need 194 to win

Siraj turns away in disgust and lets out a roar of agony, Jaiswal gets up with a resigned look and throws the ball to the middle. Fifth ball of the 39th over, it is short and Duckett top edges the pull shot. Jaiswal runs in from deep square leg, he had a lot of distance to cover. But he got in position, dives forward and it slips right from his hands. More misery for India. 

Duckett ends on 98 off 117 balls, Crawley on 57 off 119 balls. 

England 168/0 in 39 overs, need 203 to win

And Duckett is now within five runs of an incredible century. As expected, it is a change of ends for Siraj, he continues in the next over. 

The second ball of that over from Jadeja is reverse sweeped to cover point by Duckett. He reverse sweeps the fourth ball as well and sends it through cover for another four. Jadeja surprises Duckett with some extra bounce next ball, nearly hits the batter's helmet grill. Single off the last ball. 

Duckett on 95 off 112, Crawley on 57 off 118. 

England 165/0 in 38 overs, need 206 to win

Jadeja will be bowling from the Rugby End now, replacing Siraj. Has to be said, though, it will be a surprise if Siraj is taken off the attack, could be a change of ends for him. Duckett on 86 off 106, he is on strike, Crawley on 57 off 118 at the other end. 

England 156/0 in 37 overs

Zak Crawley goes past 50 as well with a single off the second ball of that 36th over by Siraj. Then Duckett smashes the third ball through covers for four. Two singles off the next two balls and then the last ball takes Duckett's edge and goes through the vacant first slip region for another four. Siraj looks at Duckett with a frustrated smile, the batter looks at him right back. 

Duckett on 85 off 106 balls, Crawley on 51 off 112. 

England 150/0 in 36 overs

Right just two runs in that first over of the session from Bumrah, one of those coming from a leg bye off the fifth ball. What is for sure today is that Siraj has done a really good job of plugging up the other end with Bumrah, something he wasn't able to do at all in the first innings, or any of India's recent Test matches really. 

Crawley on strike, he is on 42 off 97, Duckett on 65 off 91 balls. 

England 119/0 in 31 overs

Right, India need wickets and they need them pronto. In fact the one way they can really get their noses back in front in this Test is if there is at least a mini-collapse here. Bumrah is the kind of man who can make those things happen. He is steaming in for the 30th over with Duckett on strike. Here we go!

The seconds are ticking down to the start of the second session, which could pretty much decide which way this match is going to go quite decisively. For now England are a couple of kilometres ahead. No drizzle as the players walk out though and so there are no stoppages or delays. 

India clearly wanted to squeeze in another Bumrah over in that session and so Siraj was going about his business quickly there. Crawley, however, pulled out late before the last ball, citing some movement behind the sight screen. Siraj raises his hands, those eyes of his breathing fire but he runs back to the top of his run-up anyhow. He pitches it up and Crawley defends it back to the bowler. When the umpire calls for Lunch, Siraj lets rip on Crawley. KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal can also be seen talking to the England openers as they walked off, albeit with smiles on their faces. It was not quite Ashes 2014, in the way that Crawley didn't seem as interested in keeping Siraj riled up the way KP seemed to be with Johnson. But hey, it's a good chance for a throw back right?

Wow it all came to a boil towards the end of that over with Siraj absolutely livid with Zak Crawley for pulling out before he delivered the last ball of that over. Shades of Johnson vs Pietersen Ashes 2014 there.

England are well on their way at the end of the first session. They need just 254 to win. 

Duckett on 64 off 89 balls, Crawley on 42 off 93. 

Now then, is this going to be the last over before Lunch? Who knows but Gill has decided that he wants these batters to face some pace from both ends. Siraj getting ready to steam in with Duckett on strike. 

It was a very difficult chance indeed, one would say unfair to call that a drop, but it is what it is. A pretty eventful 29th over from Bumrah there. He let go of a big appeal for LBW third ball and didn't really bother with asking for a review when the umpire shook his head, which means he probably knew that the ball was going over. Duckett and Crawley run three off the next ball with Bumrah missing the yorker. Then he fires in a full one, 142kmph on off, Crawley pushed it right back to him. It came low and fast to Bumrah to his left, he was in his follow through and could only stretch his left hand down. It hits his palm and goes down. The last ball swings down the leg side and leaves Pant stranded, four byes. 

England 116/0 in 29 overs, need 255 to win 

Wow, Rishabh Pant can be heard shouting "Come on!" in the stump mic as at long last, Paul Reiffel is unable to put that ball through the ring. England won't like this one bit. It is going to be Bumrah and Jadeja bowling all the way through to Lunch and the ball has been changed as well. Another piece of footage being aired in which Jadeja can be seen truimphantly waving his fist in the face of Chris Gaffaney at the non-striker's end. All in good jest though and Gaffaney has a smile on his face as well and so Jadeja won't be getting an official reprimand for that.

It is quite a common sight in India for big cheers to go around the ground whenever a big batter walks out to the crease. This time, we see something similar, only it is for Jasprit Bumrah taking off his cap and being brought back into the attack. It has been all to easy for Crawley and Duckett thus far. Can Bumrah make a difference here? 

Meanwhile Ravindra Jadeja had also been brought in to replace Shardul Thakur in the previous over and so India have two of their best bowling in tandem going into Lunch. 

England have gone at over six runs an over in the last 10 overs or so and Ben Duckett in particular is looking incredibly dangerous. At the moment, it is all too easy for them and India don't seem to have any real antidote for this apart from tossing the ball to Bumrah and hope for the best. 

Duckett on 56 off 73, Crawley on 34 off 72 balls. 

England 96/0 in 24 overs, need 275 to win

Shardul Thakur actually stops in his run up before the third ball of the 22nd over with Gill walking towards umpire Chris Gaffaney. The ball goes through the ring again and is tossed right back to the captain. Then Thakur himself asks the umpire to check again before delivering the sixth ball of that over. Before all that though, Ben Duckett took a single off the second ball of that over to get to 50 in 66 balls. 

England 87/0 in 22 overs, need 284 to win

Prasidh bowls the first ball of the 21st over full and wide, Duckett sends it hurtling through covers for four. Then a bouncer for the fifth ball, homing on Duckett's head and the batter pulls it with aplomb through square leg for another four. Earlier, Shardul Thakur had bowled a freebie wide outside leg stump for Duckett to put away with ease for a four. 

India leaking runs now as soon as Bumrah is taken off. 

England 81/0, need 290 to win

Well Duckett and Crawley have kept the Bazball shots in their pocket so far but the former tried pulling out a couple towards the end of that 16th over from Krishna. He moved early for a scoop fifth ball, Krishna doesn't let that affect him and hits the hard length anyhow, Duckett misses it just about. Then he absolutely pummels the last ball through covers for four. 

Now Shardul Thakur to bowl the next over. Duckett and Crawley surely would be getting ready to shift gears now. 

England 56/0 in 17 overs, need 315 to win

Now it is this same thing that resulted in Pant getting fined in the first innings. However, India don't seem as flustered as they did back then while complaining about the ball. Quite a concern, though, if they feel that the ball has lost shape after just over 10 overs. Duckett slashes the firth ball of that over from Krishna over slips for four and there was a single off the third ball for Crawley. It was a good over otherwise and so those five runs must be quite irritating for Krishna. Siraj, meanwhile, continues from the other end for the fifth over of his spell. 

England 46/0 in 15 overs, need 325 to win

For England, a little sigh of relief as it is Bumrah who has been replaced. As stated earlier, Siraj has done really well to keep the pressure up from the other end, can Prasidh Krishna now do the same? 

Both Duckett and Crawley on 20 each, the former off 42 balls, the latter off 43. 

England 41/0, need 330 to win

Blunting the new ball seems to be the priority for now and well, the Indians would know that they have a mixed bag at the moment. On the one hand, Siraj has done a really good job of keeping the pressure up from the other end while Bumrah does his thing. Lot of swing for the pacers to use. On the other, though, they would also know just how quickly this England batting lineup can flip the tables on them if they manage to settle in. 

England 36/0, need 335 to win

England got off the mark for the day with Duckett sending the third ball of that over from Bumrah through covers for four. Bumrah ended that over with an unplayable jaffa, getting it to curl into Duckett and then away at a very high pace. It missed Duckett's bat by nanometres and it even wrongfooted Pant, who couldn't hold on to it. 

Siraj then makes a good start from the other end, with singles coming off the first and last balls of that over for Crawley and Duckett respectively. 

All right, grey overcast conditions but no drizzle in the air and so we do have some cricket to play. Jasprit Bumrah steaming in, Ben Duckett on strike.

Mark Butcher had said about an hour back that there is a track outside off with a lot of cracks, expect the ball to shoot at the batters' faces from there.  It's a new-ball pitch, balls misbehaved till the 50th over. Effects of the heavy roller nipped that late yesterday. From the Football Stand end, there'll be Jadeja to Duckett and Stokes with a big plate of rough. There are patches outside off for right handers too but they're a touch wide.

Rishabh Pant was officially reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) ahead of Day 5’s play on Tuesday for his on-field conduct during England’s first innings in the match. Pant was found guilty of having breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match.” The 27-year-old was also handed one demerit point for the incident that involved with an argument with the umpire.

In the 61st over of England’s innings, when Harry Brook and Ben Stokes were batting, Pant was seen having a discussion with the umpires regarding the condition of the ball.

According to the UK Met Office department, wet weather is likely to persist throughout the morning and afternoon in Headingley, Leeds with chances of rainfall peaking post noon between 12 and 1 pm (6:30pm IST). However, the Met department predicts the weather to be carrying “light rain changing to sunny intervals by early evening.”
