More turn on offer

No ball woes continue

India's woes with no balls continues, there is one no ball in Bumrah's over, the first over after the break. Ashwin is who India depute at the other end. The question seems to be when England will declare. Might Root even get to a triple century by the end of Day 2? Bumrah draws an outside edge in the 150th over, but the flies away past slips for four.

ENG 464/4

14:33 (IST)06 Feb 2021

On 184, Joe Root goes for a cheeky reverse sweep that goes for four. Root can do nothing wrong at this stage. India have lost all their Reviews now, with Kohli going for yet another bootless Review. Root moves into his 190s.

ENG 428/4

13:35 (IST)06 Feb 2021
Another partnership builds momentum

Root charges Ashwin. Dances down the track and smashes the ball down the ground, so much so that both the umpire and Pope take evasive action, letting it go for four. Pope follows suit in the next over, uses his feet to get to the pitch of the ball and drills a four down the ground.

ENG 415/4

13:28 (IST)06 Feb 2021
Offies bowl from either end

Ashwin and Sundar bowl from either end after a drinks break, with England's progress having been bogged down. India seem to have regrouped and altered their plans. Ashwin is bowling with a shorter run up, possibly preparing for a long spell before Tea.

ENG 404/4

13:11 (IST)06 Feb 2021
England reach 400

New man Ollie Pope is facing the lion's share of balls with Ishant and Nadeem bowling in tandem. Root moves quietly into his 170s. The boundaries have turned into singles for now, with England recovering from Stokes's wicket. 400 comes up for England with a push down the ground by Root.

ENG 378/3

12:23 (IST)06 Feb 2021
100 partnership

Another triple digit partnership comes up in the England innings. Root and Stokes only operating in singles for now, with play just having started in the afternoon session, but the sort of shots Stokes went for towards the end of the morning is a sign of how much this pair can hurt India later in the day.

ENG 363/3

12:14 (IST)06 Feb 2021
Second session

The day resumes. Ishant Sharma starts proceedings for India, Root and Stokes resume the England innings. The first run comes off a flick of the pads from Root.

11:33 (IST)06 Feb 2021
Lunch - England 355/3

Root is now on his highest score against India. His previous best had been 154 in Trent Bridge in 2014. The problem for India is coming mostly from the other end now though. Stokes crashes a four on the leg side against Bumrah. Has taken on the attacking role just when it looked the bowlers were starting to get some assistance from the pitch. Root faces one over from Sundar before the break. 92 runs were added in the morning session without loss of wickets. At the end of the first session, England are 355/3.

11:23 (IST)06 Feb 2021
Stokes on the charge

Stokes continues giving charge, despite the ones he is missing. Sundar walloped to the leg side for four. The off spinner gets one delivery to rear up on Root, bringing a wry smile from the England skipper.

ENG 337/3

10:53 (IST)06 Feb 2021
India lose 2 Reviews

Root and Stokes continue building their partnership, getting the 50 up for the stand. Ashwin appeals for LBW against Stokes, India take a Review against him but the batsman survives. Immediately in the next over, Shahbaz Nadeem goes up in appeal against Root too. And again, India lose a Review. Is there some desperation creeping into India's game in the first session itself?

ENG 313/3

10:32 (IST)06 Feb 2021
300 up for England

With England batsmen Joe Root and Ben Stokes looking well-set, Indian bowlers are struggling to take control over them. England have crossed the 300-run mark. Root has reached 142* and Stokes 26*.

10:27 (IST)06 Feb 2021
Shahbaz brought in

After using R Ashwin, Jasprit Bumrah and Ishant Sharma, skipper Virat Kohli has brought left arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem into the attack. It wasn't a great Day 1 for Nadeem as he conceded 65 runs in 20 overs he bowled.

Ben Stokes takes the aerial route

Ben Stokes cleared his intentions of going after Indian bowlers with this six off R Ashwin's ball. Ashwin tosses it up teasingly around off, Stokes dropkicks it over long-off, just an extension of the arm and the timing takes care of the rest.

09:35 (IST)06 Feb 2021
Ashwin opens the attack

R Ashwin opens the Day 2 bowling attack before Joe Root and Ben Stokes. The ball is 10-over old and India are hoping to get a couple of early wickets to get back to the game. Ashwin has a great record against Stokes, getting better of him 7 times in Tests.
