India vs Bangladesh Highlights, 1st Test Day 1: IND 339/6, R Ashwin and R Jadeja remain unbeaten at stumps in Chennai

Ashwin gets to his ton. What an innings this has been from the Indian all-rounder it is his sixth overall and second at the Chepauk. The first one was against England three years back. 

We are 15 minutes away from play and Ashwin is almost near his ton. What an innings it has been while both Jadeja and him have built this partnership but he has been the dominant one who pushed Bangladesh onto the backfoot and kept the tempo through his innings. It will be a well-deserved innings from the local boy. India from 144/6 has reached a very good position. If this partnership bats another hour tomorrow morning India will look good for 450 which will be an exceptional total on this surface. Murali Karthik also reckons that the pitch might start turning from tomorrow.  After 76.5 overs IND is 327/6

One thing Bangladesh could have done differently in hindsight is use more spinners early on in the game so that the seamers could have got more rest and would have been fresh by this point. However, if a wicket would have fallen early then we might not have been having this discussion at this point. The lack of using spinners early may or may not have impacted the game but have definitely impacted the over-rate and this will impact their WTC points. Even in Pakistan series overs from Bangladesh were slow but today it seems like they won't even bowl 80 overs despite the extension. 

The duo now has put 150-run partnership. India is giving Bangladesh a taste of their own medicine here. This is what Bangladesh did to Pakistan and now they are on the receiving end. However, having said that this is what India does to the visiting sides when there is an opportunity the visiting sides need to finish off, if not Bangladesh is looking at what will happen . Despite the terrible start India increasingly looks like is going to come to bat tomorrow morning and if they manage to bat till lunch they will go past 400 and that will deeply hurt Bangladesh. Regardless of what happens for the remainder of 45 minutes left in the day this session has belonged to India. While who the entirety of the day belonged to might be debatable but this session is the reason why it is at least a debate. Bangladesh completely dominated the first two sessions with some exceptional bowling under the clouds and once Ashwin and Jadeja got together India went on the assertive to completely push Bangladesh out of it. Sun is out and is shinning bright and things are looking increasingly comfortable for India now. 

Jadeja has now gone past his half-century. It has become a new normal to expect Jadeja will come in and score runs in red-ball format and he delivered the goods again today. While Ashwin has born and brought up playing on this ground Jadeja has been part of the Chennai Super Kings franchise for years and would know the conditions well. However, despite knowing the good thing is both the son and the prodigal son have stepped up and delivered when India was in deep trouble. Bangladesh bowlers are now increasingly looking tired. After 68 overs IND is 275/6

The Bangladesh left-arm spinner relies heavily on bowling lines and lengths instead of getting the high revs on the ball similar to Monty Panesar in the past or India's R Ashwin with the ball. The problem for Shakib on this surface is it is a wicket where the ball goes in straight lines with some extra bit of bounce which makes it easy for the batters to hit the ball. All the need to do is adjust to the bounce and hit the ball hence the variation needs to come from the revs where batters can be disguised in the air. A black soil wicket which has a relatively lower bounce and being accurate is good enough to restrict the batters. This has been clever for Ashwin and Jadeja to pick Shakib is the weakest among the attack in the first innings of this game. After 66.5 overs IND is 270/6

Ideally,, they could have tested Ashwin with a few more short pitch deliveries early on his innings however, with him being well set now seems like that train has passed. May be could have used a few slower balls when Ashwin was playing his shots. Bangladesh at the moment are hoping that one of these batters will make mistakes rather than create an opportunity. And something which also can be done despite going for boundaries keep the batters at one end and plan a dismissal and stop the rotation of strikes completely. After 63.4 overs IND is 258/6

One thing which has happened in this partnership is both Ashwin and Jadeja have shown their experience and know how of how to pull the team out of trouble from these sorts of situations while Bangladesh on the other hand seems like they are bit shell-shocked on how to react to the counter attack. While they are trying a few things but seems like they lack the same conviction which they had in the morning when they were all over India. This is where the experienced campaigners like Shakib, Mushfiqur and Monimul need to have a discussion and stop the onslaught somehow. 

Umpires have taken a drinks break here. It is the right choice though it is cloudy it has been a muggy day in Chennai with players sweating a lot. A moment to re-assess for India and Bangladesh also one noticeable change in the last couple of overs against Shakib is both Ashwin and Jadeja have started to play with a bit of caution against him than being hyper-aggressive like they did in the initial overs. As we update Ashwin has gone past his 50 what an innings it has been when India was in deep trouble he came and dragged them out of the trouble with attacking cricket and some scintillating shots. This is turning into an exceptional partnership especially the way they have attacked Shakib so far has been remarkable. Bangladesh needs to be extremely careful here as India is slowly and steadily getting into some sort of fighting position. Given India's impeccable track record at home that is the last thing Bangladesh want. They have dominated the majority of the day and need to just pick one more wicket to get into the tail however, things are drifting away quickly. Credit especially must be given to home boy Ashwin who is putting on a show with some elegant shots. After 57.3 overs IND is 228/6

It has been Bangladesh's day so however, one thing which has been poor from them is the over-rate. They have bowled 23 in the morning session and 25 in the noon session which is unacceptable. Yes. They have bowled a lot of pace but they needed to be better than that and they might be fined post-game for their sluggish overs also might cost them a few WTC points down the line. Given the way things stand at the moment the extra 30 minutes for the day will definitely be used but the question is how many overs Bangladesh will fall short of 90 even after that?

Ashwin and Jadeja have quickly put on a 50-run stand. They are counter-attacking here are the duo and it is working out nicely at the moment. Ashwin especially has been the chief in the partnership and is taking the attack onto the bowling. He is charging down the track from time to time and also playing some lovely crisp shots on either side of the wicket. As per Bangladesh they have reacted to the onslaught put on and have brought in Shakib into the attack which did not start well either as both Jadeja and Ashwin have extracted a boundary each of the left-arm spinner. After 53 overs IND is 208/6

The pitch seems to be good for batting now as the ball has got older and the moisture has completely dried down however, the problem India has is they lost six wickets yes, Ashwin and Jadeja are capable batters but they would have loved to have at least two proper top order batters at the crease at this point. Unless Jadeja and Ashwin pull of a miraculous partnership and take India to around the 300-320 mark it will be Bangladesh who will have the upper hand at least until they finish their batting innings. Indian bowling is skilled but can they override the probable better batting conditions tomorrow will be something to be seen. After 51.1 overs IND is 189/6

Taskin has taken the ball for Bangladesh here and he slipped in a bumper and the physio is being called in for concussion test. This won't be a bad ploy for Bangladesh at this stage in the game as Ashwin in the past has shown vulnerabilities towards facing the short ball and the pitch too will respond if they do it now. The Indian off-spinner also seems to have come with the intention to counter attack hence a few hits on the helmet might force him to play a wrong shot. However, it will be interesting to see how Jadeja will manage his innings today. After 49.1 overs IND is 178/6

Welcome back Jadeja is out there in the middle with Ashwin for India it is all about both these players showing their experience and for Bangladesh it is about doing more of the same what they did in the noon session. 

"I think this is probably the most well-rounded team that Bangladesh has produced [in my two tenures here]... We're covering a lot of bases, we've got good fast bowlers, we've got a really experienced spin attack and then the batting, we actually have good depth... So our balance of the team in this series is really, really good and that gives us actually a lot more confidence that we can be competitive in this series."

While the session in isolation might look shared if the game is taken in context India is behind in this game. Three crucial wickets for Bangladesh at three crucial juncture while some of it has been poor batting and some has been good bowling. Regardless India needs to put on 250-300 to stay in the game as the sun is expected to be out tomorrow and if that happens the wicket will be good for batting. As the day goes on it increasingly seems like an exceptional toss to win from Shanto and put India into bat first and bowling responding nicely. After 48 overs IND is 176/6

Shanto smells blood here. With 10 minutes to go for Tea, he has brought in Hasan. India also does not have the cushion of Axar Patel or Kuldeep Yadav here who can bat as they have shown before. However, for this game India playing three seamers, and Bumrah, Siraj, and Akashdeep can hold bat for bat but expecting runs from them might be too much wishful thinking for the Indian team. Hence one wicket here for Bangladesh might mean they will be having a chance to bat today evening or tomorrow morning to make a massive first innings score. After 46 overs IND is 168/6

The onus now falls on Ashwin and Jadeja to take India to safe shores here. Both are very capable and have played some exceptional innings in the past however, the challenge today is different it is not more a traditional Chennai wicket but more like English conditions. And given the weather prediction it is not going to be the same tomorrow the sun will come out and Bangladesh will get better conditions to bat on. India needs to scrap their way through 250-300 at least to give themselves a chance. This is another solid performance from Bangladesh for the third Test in a row. 

There is the wicket for Rana. He altered the length for this session. Once again it was that good length area which got the better of Jaiswal who was batting so fall. The batter had to decide if he had to go forward or backward and ended up hanging on a backfoot for a ball which he could have left on length that's the indecision high pace can bring when the bowlers pitch in the right length. With that wicket, Bangladesh have now once again pulled back. As we update Mehidy Hassan has picked up KL Rahul too. India is now in genuine trouble in the contest. After 42.3 overs IND is 145/6

Things are at a standstill here in Chennai. It is not often we enter this passage of play in Test cricket but here we are. Seems like India just wants to see through another session and come in the evening and take it from there and as per Bangladesh they seem like they want to keep bowling tight lines for mistakes to happen which is not a bad ploy because of the cloudy conditions however, if they fail to pick wickets the nature of red-soil wicket is such that runs come quick and fast. Also, one noticeable thing for Bangladesh is instead of Rana banging the ball in short he is looking to hit a good length area with average success. 

We have reached the noon water break and it has been shared hour. The frustrating part for India is the wicket of Pant and the shot he played and for Bangladesh apart from Hasan none of the other bowlers picked any wickets that needed to change. While Hasan has found the right length for the surface the other seamers have been too short or either too full and too much variation in lengths. They need to find to way to be more consistent with other seamers as well if they end up on top at the end of Day's play. As per India, they need to be patient and rebuild another partnership here. After 37.3 overs IND is 136/4

Jaiswal would like to bag this year and carry this for the rest of his career. He just continues to find a method of scoring runs every where and every situation. One of the remarkable things about Jaiswal's batting as an opener is his ability to pick his moments to be proactive and reactive. Despite the wickets falling from the other end he held his end and kept chipping away. When the partnership with Pant was growing Jaiswal too seemed to change gears however, once the wicket fell he went back to shell and looking to build a partnership with Rahul here. The left-hander continues to show immense maturity at a young age. After 35.4 overs IND is 132/4

Spinner has been brought into the attack and this is where India might eye up to get a few easy runs. The wicket is still not spoiled enough to get a turn but because of the red-soil pitch,, spinners will extract bounce. Another advantage India has with Bangladesh spinners is they are not quick through the air like Indian spinners which will give Indian batters time to adjust and play their shots. From Bangladesh perspective it is important that they do not over-attack and start leaking runs but keep the runs tight and test the patience of batters. After 33.4 overs IND is 124/4

It is a good opportunity for Rahul to play an innings of substance and make this spot his own. With Jurel and Sarfaraz waiting in the wings and Rahul's up-and-down form and injury record it is imperative he plays a good knock here. However, for that one thing Rahul needs to be wary of is he tends to get into his shell and keeps himself to one end and stop the rotation of strikes which might allow the bowlers to plan a dismissal and also might be problematic for Jaiswal if stays at one end who likes rotation of strike and play few shots.  After 31.3 overs IND is 120/4

This is clever from Bangladesh bowlers instead of trying too hard they are hitting the channels and keeping things tight in this noon session which is the best way to deal with the second session with less moment and this is where both Jaiswal and Rahul too have to keep their patience and see this spell out. Sooner or later spinners will be brought into the attack who can be targeted as the moisture would have partially dried down compared to morning it would be easier to deal with the spinners. Hasan too has bowled 11 overs and he too might start getting tired so India's time to milk runs will come but it is about keeping patience for now. After 29.3 overs IND is 103/4

Hasan picked another wicket however, it was not the way we expected. It was an extremely poor shot from Pant he was well set and played a loose shot outside the off-stump and immediately after the edge Pant did look frustrated. After all the hard work done in the first session that was a bad way to go and now Rahul has walked in and India has to do it all over again. As per Bangladesh, this has been an ideal start to the session. One more wicket in the next 15-20 minutes or so will put India in serious trouble and even threat of losing the Test match. After 27.1 overs IND is 101/4

It is Hasan and Rana who have taken the ball for Bangladesh and as expected the moment has dulled down and conditions should be much better for batting compared to the morning session. However, the challenging part for Indian batters here is there is still cloud cover because of which the odd ball might swing subtly not much but do enough to create an opportunity especially the way Hasan bowls where he keeps probing at the batters asking questions of their foot moment and judgment of their off-stump is. It is going to be another absorbing session. After 25.1 overs IND is 96/3

We are back for the noon session both Jaiswal and Pant walk back clouds are intact the ball is still new will be interesting to see if there is any moment on offer for the bowlers. 

There has been plenty of debate about KL Rahul’s position on the eve of the game like many Tests before. His batting number has been chopped and changed throughout the years however, his ton in South Africa, in December last year and a handy half-century against England in Hyderabad earlier this year will act as insurance for a while but given the players waiting in the ranks, he needs to deliver the goods consistently.

That's the morning session done and dusted. It is a shared session. Bangladesh did start well thanks to Hasan Mahmud's new ball brilliance however, as the ball got older and Hasan was taken out of the attack Pant and Jaiswal started to play a few shots and pile on some runs on the board. One thing that would disappoint Bangladesh is apart from Hasan none of the seamers have looked convincing and it will be something Bangladesh would be looking to alter in the noon session. As per India conditions will get better for batting and if one of Jaiswal or Pant bats through noon India would be in a solid position. After 23 overs IND is 88/3

One thing that is favorable for Bangladesh despite the good partnership between Pant and Jaiswal is SG balls will be helpful to the bowlers longer than Kookaburra hence they can have another crack at the batters in the noon session with some changed plans. 

We have seen the introduction of spin here from Bangladesh with about 20 minutes to go for lunch. It has been a decent session for Bangladesh ideally they would have loved to take another one but three wickets after opting to bowl first on a decent batting strip is a good effort. However, one thing Shanto can try is to bring back Hasan for a couple of overs before the lunch break and try and push for that wicket. As apart from him it must be said the rest of the three bowlers did not look threatening despite the helpful conditions. As per India Pant and Jaiswal have built a handy partnership here. Pant is enjoying the pace of Rana here. While Rana is the quickest among the Bangladesh seamers his inexperience is on display here. With the wicket offering something to the bowlers, it seems like Bangladesh and Rana have opted a touch too early to go for the short ball tactic with the point put in deep. While it might have worked on a flat wicket when nothing was happening as a drying up the runs tactic at the moment Pant is enjoying the bouncers and the moment Rana is missing his line his pulling or cutting the ball for boundaries not give any relief to the bowler. After 17.1 overs IND is 67/3

Amid all the chaos from the other end, Jaiswal has once again gone about his business brilliantly. Amid so many tournaments in the middle Jaiswal today morning seems like he is continuing from the form where he left off against England earlier this year. One thing that makes Jaiswal special is his ability to switch gears whenever he wants to do it and push the bowlers onto the back foot and we might see some of that later if he stays in the middle. While Hasan did bowl well from one end Jaiswal did chance his arm against Taskin which did give him good rewards. He has got himself a start here and India would desperately want him to make a big score here. After 15.2 overs IND is 58/3

Nahid Rana in the first couple of overs is yet to find his lines and lengths here. He has been spraying the ball around a bit. Bangladesh needs to be careful here as the first spell of Hasan is coming to an end and they need to sustain the pressure which was built by him even after he is taken out of the attack. However, how Rana started India seems to have a get-out-of-jail card option given his high pace. Another choice Shanto has with two left-handers is bringing Mehidy into the attack. When the pitch does seam it will spin as well. After 13.3 overs IND is 50/3

It has been an hour that belonged to Bangladesh. Shanto won the toss and put India into bat first and the fast bowlers responded for Bangladesh. They have hit the lines and lengths straight away. The rustiness of not playing Test cricket over six months has shown in the Indian batting and contrarily the Test match practice of bowling with the new ball and hitting the right areas is shown by Bangladesh. Jaiswal and Pant are in the middle for India they need to build a partnership given the counter-attacking nature of these two if they do spend time in the middle India will be able to score quickly. After 11.5 overs IND is 40/3

Here comes Nahid Rana. He is the fastest among the Bangladesh pace pack and can clock above 145kmph consistently. And he replaces Taskin Ahmed from the end when there seems to be steep bounce. He has already sent down two well directed bouncers to Jaiswal: Pings Venkata Krishna B

Kohli did come in with positive intent to play a few shots but it felt the drive was a bit loose from his end. Nevertheless once again that nagging length from Hasan does the trick. Hasan now has picked up three wickets and looking in good rhythm. It is still cloudy here now the challenge for Shanto is how long is he going to keep Hasan bowling will it be a seven-over spell or will he take him off give him a couple of overs break and bring him back about 20-25 minutes to go for lunch. Hasan is making this a good morning for Bangladesh. Kohli goes fishing outside the off stump and edges to the wicketkeeper. This was a delivery that Kohli could have easily shouldered arms to. But wants to have a feel of the ball touching the bat and nicks it. India are in a definite spot of bother at 34/3 as Rishabh Pant walks in to join Jaiswal: Reports Venkata Krishna B from the ground

As anticipated Hasan did pick Gill but not in the conventional way. Gill was strangled down the leg-side however, one thing that dismissal has shown was Gill was aware of the ball that would come back into him and that was playing on his mind and was surprised by the line going wrong of Hasan which did not happen all morning and played a nothing shot. Nevertheless as has happened many times before Gill starts a series with a failure. The pattern of the youngster's career has been starting the series slowly but picking up as the series goes on. While Taskin is the senior bowler of the two pacers who are opening the bowling here, Hasan might be the more threatening one given the conditions as he already proved by troubling Rohit and eventually picking him up. Unlike Taskin who bangs in the ball into hard lengths, Hasan tends to bowl that nagging length every delivery where the batter needs to make the judgment of whether should he play the ball on the front foot or remain on the back foot and that uncertainty is what costed Rohit when he hung his weight on the back foot twice once got away with LBW call but second time nicked it to the slip. Given Shubman Gill's technical flaws Hasan is the bowler he would want to face the least. After 7 overs IND is 24/1

This is a good start from Bangladesh they did start a bit Waverly for the first couple of overs however, slowly steadily they are getting into the rhythm and bowling that right channel which can trouble the batters with subtle variations in length. For Instance in the previous over Taskin kept banging on good length and as a surprise delivered a fuller one though Jaiswal clipped it for a boundary he did seem a bit hurried in playing that shot. Rohit Sharma has just got away with one here. Hasan did bowl one nipping back in and Rohit missed the ball it hit the pads after a loud appeal Bangladesh decided to send the decision upstairs and found out the ball was just clipping the top of the middle stump and it was the umpire's call and the Indian skipper gets away with one. While they have started a bit away from the stumps did Bangladesh pacers they are slowly and steadily getting into the rhythm here. That delivery from Hasan Mahmud to Rohit to bring it back in is a wake-up call that these bowlers can move it both ways. After 3.5 overs IND 4/0

This is going to be a big test of character for Jaiswal. Among all Indian batsmen, he is the one who struggled the most during the course of the three-day camp and in the practice sessions. He kept playing and missing prompting Kohli to step in and show him how to leave deliveries. He has been challenged by the Bangladesh seamers so far. We are done with the opening over and there was some hint of seam on offer for Taskin Ahmed. The conditions are looking promising for the Pacers early in the piece here. Winning the toss and opting to bowl first Bangladesh will be hoping to chip in a couple of wickets in the first session of play. As per Rohit and Jaiswal, it is going to be a session of waiting and watching rather than trying to stamp their authority because of the conditions that are prevalent. It's a day very unlike to what we are used to in Chennai - very cool at the moment at 28 degrees, but as the day progresses, it promises to be 33-34 which will be like the Chennai we all know. As we speak about the pitch, it's a red soil pitch. And what does red soil mean - bounce, turn and as the game progresses, the big spinners come into play. They have left a little bit of residual moisture underneath the pitch. So the fast bowlers will have their say at the start.

We would have done the same. It's going to be challenging conditions. We have prepared well. Looking at the 10 Test matches, every match is important. But we want to focus on what's in front of us. We had a good prep. Three seamers and two spinners - Bumrah, Akash Deep, Siraj, Ashwin and Jadeja.

I'll like to bowl first. There's moisture and we want to make use of it. Pitch looks hard. The first session will be very good for the seamers. This is a new series. It's a good mixture of experience and youth. We go with three seamers

Chennai has been witnessing record temperatures for the month of September. The last four days the temperature has hit 37-38. But it is a very gloomy morning here on the morning of the Test with the toss just 15 minutes away. Going by the warmups it is still not clear what will be their bowling combination. The red soil pitch still has a tinge of grass, so let’s see what it makes the captains to do.

"It's not easy when you do not play [Tests] for a period of six to eight months. The good thing is, a lot of guys in the squad are quite experienced with that. It has happened previously as well, which is why it was important for us to have this little camp over here in Chennai. And guys who have not played a lot of Test cricket obviously went on to play the Duleep Trophy, which was good. So in terms of preparation, in terms of readiness, I feel we are quite ready for this game and what lies ahead of us."
