India vs South Africa 2nd ODI Updates
The last time India played an ODI in Ranchi, in March 2019, the city’s favourite son MS Dhoni was still striding out to bat in the middle order and manoeuvring the field around from behind the stumps. More topically, India were gearing up for a global tournament, like they currently are, but unlike the present, it was to be in the same format in which they were playing that particular series (against Australia), and their first squad had not concurrently travelled across the Indian Ocean instead.
So devoid of context is the ongoing ODI series against South Africa – with the T20 World Cup set to begin in a week – that the primary concern for India at the moment has to be the growing injury list. After Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja’s withdrawals hit the main T20 World Cup squad, the reserves list has also suffered a dent, with Deepak Chahar ruled out for the remaining two ODIs; a BCCI release stated that Chahar had felt “stiffness in his back” after the third T20I against South Africa in Indore last Tuesday; the seamer’s recovery will now be monitored at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru. Shikhar Dhawan: "Worked perfectly well for us, thanks to Keshav that he chose to bat (smiles). It was coming on nicely, but it stayed low. Plan was to take on the bowlers in the first 10 overs as we knew it could get difficult in the middle overs. When the dew came, you could see that it got easier. Very satisfied with the bowling unit, they are all young and these are good learnings for them. Especially Shahbaz."
Keshav Maharaj: " We didn't expect dew to be such a factor here, that's why we opted to bat. We tried what we could, Shreyas and Kishan played very well."
Ishan Kishan: "When I was fielding they (fans in Ranchi) were asking me to get a hundred today, unfortunately I missed it. No worries, I'm just happy that my team won the game today and maybe in the next game I will give my best and make my team win again. It's difficult here sometimes, because I played so many matches in Ranchi, it is not easy for the new batters to score runs, so we were looking to play according to the merit of the ball. Nortje, Rabada are too quick and sometimes the ball isn't coming on properly and stopping a touch and the next ball it was coming really quick. So, I was planning to go for it if it was near my chest and not to play a pre-determined shot if the ball is not there."
And that is that. A comprehensive win for India in Ranchi by seven wickets. Ishan Kishan with a 93. Shreyas Iyer with a triple figure score. The series is all level with the decider in Delhi on Tuesday.

Slaps a Rabada free hit over extra cover for four and brings up his century. What an innings this has been from him. Calm and composed under pressure. India need 16 to win off the last seven overs.

Between Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer, who kept the run rate in check after India were two down in the powerplay, Ishan Kishan was the aggressor. With him gone, Iyer has ensured the odd boundary keeps coming, especially going after Fortuin. India, 231/3 after 39 overs.
The attack continues as India inch closer to 279. 200 up for the hosts. Kishan goes after Nortje, yet again. Short, outside off and dispatched for a six over fine leg. India, 208/2 after 34 overs.

Ishan Kishan seems to be in his usual hitting mood at the moment. Four sixes and three fours so far in his innings. Just when South Africa thought bringing Rabada in would stop some of that, he pulls him through deep mid wicket. Runs down off him on a couple of occasions in the same over, 11 off it. Shreyas Iyer goes after Fortuin and Markram to get a boundary each in back to back overs. South Africa utilising spin from both ends and these two know how to play it very well. India, 133/2 after 24.
Ishan Kishan breaks the shackles to hit his first six of the innings off Keshav Maharaj. Anrich Nortje facing the southpaw in the next over touches the 146 kmph mark and finishes the the over with a 142 clicks bouncer flying past Kishan's nose. India 96/2 after 20 overs.
Kishan (20) and Iyer (22) in the middle for India. The duo have added 37 runs so far off 55 deliveries for the third wicket. 85/2 after 18 overs.
Anrich Nortje crosses the 140kmph mark four times in his third over, going as up as 144 clicks. He can be crucial here, especially up against Shreyas Iyer. Only four off the over. India, 79/2.
After a maiden over from Kagiso Rabada post the field restrictions being lifted, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan accumulate three boundaries off the next 12 deliveries. India, 72/2 after 13 overs.
An evenly contested powerplay. India cross the fifty mark while South Africa dismiss both the openers. Kishan and Iyer would look to keep them boundaries coming in the next 10 given how poorly the ball deteriorated towards the end, making it tough to score for South Africa. 55/2 after 10 overs.

Bjorn Fortuin begins with a maiden over for South Africa!
The Indian bowlers did well to restrict the Proteas batters in the death overs. Here's how the innings progressed for the visitors in Ranchi.
Overs 1-10: 40 runs, two wickets
Overs 11-20: 51 runs, no wickets
Overs 21-30: 66 runs, no wickets
Overs 31-40: 64 runs, three wickets

Big wicket for India!
Aiden Markram (79) has been so good today, but that was a loose shot, caught by Shikhar Dhawan at extra cover with a dive. Back to back wickets for India. South Africa are 217/5 after 39 overs.

South Africa cross the 200 run makr as Heinrich Klassen pulls Avesh Khan for a boundary at deep mid wicket. He has adjusted to the situation pretty well, continuing from where he had left in Lucknow. Markram at the non-striker end approaching 100. Proteas in firm control. 204/3 after 37 overs.
The pacer finally breaks the Hendricks-Markram partnership by dismissing the latter. Caught by Shahbaz Ahmed at deep square leg. South Africa, 169/3 after 32 overs.
The surviving phase is long gone, Reeza Hendricks (71) and Aiden Markram (54) are looking all comfortable now in the middle. 157/2 after 30 overs and the Proteas are set for a big finish.

After the 25 overs mark, South Africa are 122/5. The Hendricks-Markram partnership moves to 82 off 91 deliveries.
Sundar replaced Kuldeep but after two overs captain Shikhar Dhawan has went back to the left-arm chinaman. After another good 10-run over off Shardul Thakur, Kuldeep keeps the flow of runs in control giving only three in his fourth. 113/2 after 23 overs.
100 up for the Proteas. This has been a good partnership for the visitors, Markram and Hendricks have acclimatized quickly to the wicketa and have started taking on the Indian bowlers. A boundary each for the duo in Sundar's second over. 100/2 after 21 overs.
Shardul Thakur replaces Mohammed Siraj while Washington Sundar comes in for Kuldeep Yadav. All the fielders stationed behind the wicket for Shardul, what might that tell you about the wicket. Not one of those pitches where pacers can use the bounce to the their advantage. A late cut from Markram to finish the Sundar over with a boundary, 83/2 after 19 overs.

It's been a perfect debut so far from Shahbaz Ahmed. He has kept it full and on the stumps on most occasions. That wicket of Malan was a reward for the same. Kudos to Dhawan for using him early on in a prolonged spell. Concedes only three in his sixth over. South Africa, 57/2 after 14 overs.
