India vs England Highlights: IND beat ENG by 4 wickets to take 1-0 lead in Nagpur

Pretty happy. We all knew we are playing this format after a long time. I thought right from the beginning we played as per expectation. They did start well but the way we came back was superb. We wanted a leftie in the middle. It is as simple as that. We know they will spin it back into the left-handers so we wanted a leftie. Gill and Axar batted brilliantly out in the middle. Nothing specific. Overall as a team I just want us as a team to keep doing the right things as much as possible

Disappointed not to win the game. We got off to a fantastic start in the powerplay but we lost wickets. Another 40-50 runs could have been handy with the way the wicket played towards the end. The guys started really well. The game was in the balance at that point, but credit to Shreyas Iyer to build that partnership. We have to play better for longer.

I knew in advances that I could get a promotion because of left-right combo. We tried to bowl spin in the powerplay but it was coming nicely onto the bat at that point. We just wanted to bowl in the right areas. Pitch had something in it for the bowlers. I felt they varied their pace well and got turn. If we had done that as well we could have got more turn. We were trying to take calculative assaults (in the partnership with Gill).

India has thrashed England here in the first ODI. It was Jadeja's edge which sneaked through Salt's gloves of Saqib Mahmood's bowling that gave India the winning moment. Though they have lost six wickets they have got to the score with 11 overs to spare. Shubman Gill looked imperious in the chase and so did Shreyas Iyer until they both got out. Axar was the wild card trick that the management pulled off and it worked for them brilliantly. As per England they just need another spin bowler who is quality. It is hard to figure out why they had to send back Rehan Ahmed and no other spinner was added to the ODI squad despite how ineffective pace has looked at times. Nevertheless, it is what it is congratulations to team India for taking the 1-0 lead.

Though the scorecard says India has lost six wickets England where nowhere in this game apart from a few overs in their batting innings and early on in their bowling innings. It just has been one-way traffic through and through and England needs to have to do plenty of work going back to the drawing board. India will only get stronger with Kohli coming in but for England, there is no other spin option they could use even from the squad. This is the mistake they made in the 2023 World Cup bringing in a whole bunch of seamers and it is the same mistake they are doing in the current series and it is the similar squad they have picked for the Champions Trophy squad.

KL Rahul had to support Shubman Gill in the final stages of the game but he managed to get out. It was another tossed-up delivery from Rashid and KL Rahul hit it straight back to bowler. It was nothing shot in the end and he would be kicking himself. As we update Hardik Pandya comes in and hits the short ball for a six India is getting closer here but the only thing that is interesting to watch in this game from here on is whether will Gill get to his 100. As we update Gill tried to pull a ball against Mahmooed and is caught at mid-wicket.

Axar Patel is gone. That was a cracking ball from Adil Rashid. It was tossed up and flighted and the ball hitting the foot-holes turned in from outside the off-stump to hit the middle stump and Axar tried to drive the ball and missed. There was an element of surprise from Axar on how much the ball did. However, once again it is one of those deliveries which looks fabulous on highlights and social media clips but on either side of those deliveries what Rashid has bowled has been the problem. It is not just him every other England bowler started well and just got way too predictable as the innings went on.

When England where at the top of their game in ODI cricket under Eoin Morgan they had the likes of Liam Plunkett who was a bank in the middle overs. The strength of Plunkett would be to hit hard-length ball in and ball out with odd variations here and there. Brydon Carse who has been given a bit of run in this role seems to use a lot more bumpers and slower ball variations instead of just looking to hit on a length and set the field for that and build tight overs and enforce that wicket. Another example of a player who does exceptional job at doing that role is Australia's Pat Cummins. As we update Axar Patel got to his half-century.

Axar too has supported Gill brilliantly. When he came into bat the game was in balance and the ball was gripping a bit. However, he took the odd risk and played some good shots early on. However, once he got himself in he started to play measured shots, rotated the strike nicely, and helped Gill to play his knock. There has been criticism of Rohit and Gambhir's tactics during Sri Lanka series last year when they were promoting lower-order batters just to maintain left-hand and right-hand combinations. It did not give them good results then but today it worked fine and India is almost there.

This is turning into one of those chases where Virat Kohli would come into bat at three and shepherd the side to win like it was nothing. However, in place of Kohli today India has had Gill, and boy did he play Kohli's role to dot didn't he? Plenty of questions for England. The ball was gripping and turning yet their spinners could only pick one wicket thus far. The seamers did start well however, they just got carried away with short-pitch bowling. One thing the England team has got wrong again and again in this series is this is not an Indian team or set of Indian players who get overwhelmed by pace. The bowling tactic from England just doesn't seem to be polished enough at this point.

Shubman Gill has got to his half-century what an innings it has been. He did not play a shot in anger it was all his vintage short-arm jabs that went for boundaries early on and as the innings went on he dealt the spinners in his own way. Which is to rotate the strike and wait for the bowlers to come to him. The ball is turning but it is amazing how composed Gill is in these chases on turners. He scored a sublime 100 against Bangladesh during the 2023 Asia Cup in Colombo. The pitch that day was turning ragged. While none of his colleagues could support him he tried till the end to take India over the line.

The odd ball is gripping here but England is just not able to string an over of dot balls here. A few good overs will what build the pressure and force the batters to do something out of the ordinary which will force the wickets. However, as of now, England is not able to sustain that pressure and are bowling that loose ball which is easing the pressure on the batters. The Indian spinners especially Ravindra Jadeja in the first innings gave a master class on how to bowl on this one. Not too many variations just bowl it accurately with odd pace changes and let batters make the play for the runs.

Axar Patel too seems to have the intention of counter-attacking here. While England have fought well in the second innings they are letting too many boundaries go away. They are able to get an oddball to turn and beat the batters which looks good on the highlights package but in between that, they are also bowling lollipops for Indian batters to hit them for boundaries. What those loose balls have done as a result is India has built another good partnership here. It has been all to a bit easy. Every plan they would have come up with has worked for India in this game. England just could not challenge much.

Shreyas tried to sweep the ball and missed the full one against Bethell and was trapped in front of the wicket. The decision was given out on-field however, the batter sent it upstairs but there were three reds. Nevertheless it was a cracking inning from him definitely turned the momentum of this game. Axar Patel has walked into the middle for India to maintain the left-hand right-hand combination. The oddball is gripping and turning a bit here. There are still no signs of dew. England will be pushing to get one more before the dew starts to settle in.

This partnership has taken the game away from England. Unless England comes up with 3-4 quick wickets this game is good as over. This is what India usually does to the visiting teams in this format of the game. Bundle them out to around a mediocre score and let one of the batters go bezerk in the chase which Iyer did today. It is just copy-paste methodology of India winning ODI games in this format of the game. The pace at which these two are scoring this game might just finish up quite early. The latter is more of a possibility than England picking few quick wickets as mentioned earlier.

Brydon Carse who bowled well in the T20Is is being taken apart here. This is the difference between bowling in T20 cricket and ODI cricket. In the shorter version of the game the batters are looking for boundary option first and then resort to single if the delivery is not there in ODIs it is vice versa. The moment Carse erred on line in the slightest the delivery which would be a single in a shorter version is played for a boundary because of the minimum risk approach. The batters have the time to place the ball in the gap. England needs to take the sting out of this innings that will be their first priority. As we update Iyer gets to his 50.

Iyer and Gill have changed the complexion of this game pretty quickly. Iyer especially has played some cracking shots since coming in. First they have telegrammed the shot deliveries to him and then they have telegrammed the variations of full balls as well. It was just all too easy and the partnership has gone to 50 runs. While Gill has not been as prolific with his boundaries but has kept Iyer company in this partnership. It looked good for England for a bit but now it is all falling apart. Iyer is tearing this attack. If he bats another five six overs this game is good as over.

Shreyas Iyer has started with intent here. England tried to pepper him with shot stuff however, he was ready on the back foot expecting those deliveries. He played a cracking pull through mid-wicket against Archer and then he upper-cut the following ball for another six. This is good from him however, it will be interesting to see how Iyer will respond when the ball is pitched up or bowled at good length. But as of now, the runs are flowing quickly. The shine is gone and the ball is coming off nicely. These Indian batters if there is not much moment will bludgeon the quick bowling. The faster it will come the faster it will go.

India lost the second wicket and it is skipper Rohit Sharma. It was bit a identical to one of his dismissals in the Border Gavaskar Trophy. The batter tried to hit the ball through the mid-wicket region however, the ball took the bottom edge and the ball went up in the air for mid-wicket fielder to take the catch. The moment Rohit hit it he knew he was gone there. There was a disappointment on his face. The poor run for the Indian skipper continues. Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer are in the middle with India in a bit of a pickle. From match-up perspective it is what England need having make Iyer face the new ball and test him with a few bumpers.

Jofra Archer gets the first wicket. It was a jaffer of a delivery to Jaiswal. The ball pitched on the middle stump and moved slightly away in the final moment and as it went took the edge of Jaiswal's bat. There is absolutely nothing he could have done about that. If he had missed his off-stump would have been rattled. Archer is bowling well here he is looking in top rhythm. It will be a test to the Indian batters here in his opening spell. Not only is he getting some shape under the lights here but he is also got his pace high. India have to be a tad bit cautious.

Jofra Archer and Saqib Mahmood have taken the new ball for England here. While there is not much of a moment they are bowling some quick stuff here and since the lights are on the ball is skidding on even better than what it did when Harshit Rana was bowling. Test a few overs this for the Indian team as it always is under the lights in the sub-continent where the ball just tends to do a bit for a brief period. However, once the shine of the ball is gone things become extremely easy for batting. However, Archer is having a thorough investigation of Jaiswal and Rohit's technique here.

Surprise surprise it is Yashasvi Jaiswal who is going to open the batting alongside Rohit Sharma here. Interesting decision that by the Indian team given Virat Kohli will return for the next game. It will be even more interesting to see what India would do if Jaiswal were to get a good 70 or 80 here.

It will be hot and humid in the afternoon With temperature hovering around mid 30s. However it will get pleasant as the day will progress. Dew is not going to play a big role under the lights.

It was my dream. I prepared myself for this and put in the hard yards. I didn't hit the right lengths initially but got the rewards once I corrected them. They were looking to make some room (the batters), that's the reason I kept bowling on the stumps. It's a slightly two-paced pitch. Some of them are coming on nicely, some are stopping a bit. We bounced back in style. It's a good total and we can chase this down.

IN THE living room of Harshit Rana’s house in Northwest Delhi’s Ghevra village are two trophies the fast bowler won for bowling quick in the IPL. “This one is my favourite,” his father Pradeep points at a gold plaque Harshit won for cranking 146 kph in the IPL final against Sunrisers Hyderabad in Chennai.

First, it was Adil Rashid who played an ugly swipe and the wickets were rattled. It was Ravindra Jadeja who got that one and then it was Saqib Mahmood who danced down the track to hit against Kuldeep missed it completely and KL Rahul stumped the batter. England has got to 248 it is not much but after the initial jitters India had. The hosts made a very good comeback in this game. England will have to come out and bowl tightly and have to pick up a few quick early wickets. If Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill or Yashasvi Jaiswal whoever opens gets going this chase might get away from England quite quickly. Do join us for all the live action from second innings.

Hardik Pandya has been brought back into attack and Jofra Archer decided to use his long levers. He got hold of the slower ones and the hard length balls as well as extracting 16 runs in that over. England needed that it felt like it was all India after those first six to seven overs of the innings. They need another 40-50 runs here England if they have to make a game out of this. There will be dew in the second innings at some point which will tilt the balance of this pitch towards batting. In this innings, there have been a few deliveries stopped a bit but in the second innings with light and dew, the ball will come perfectly onto the bat.

Bethell got to his 50. It has been a gritty knock from the young Englishmen. He did come in when his side was in trouble and did find it hard against the Indian spinners. He defended a few played a cheeky sweep and got his innings going. He then slowly and steadily got into some sort of rhythm ticking ones and twos and getting an odd boundary here and there and got to the well-played half-century. Now plenty rests on him on how many can England get from here. As we update Ravindra Jadeja has picked up Bethell. It was a decision not given out but Rohit went upstairs and there was the wicket.

Mohammed Shami picks up his first wicket of the match. It was Brydon Carse. Rohit has all the fielders in asking the batters to go over the top and Shami pitched the ball in hard length and Carse trying to hit the ball into the orbit missed and the off-stump got rattled. England have lost seven wickets now. Just when their innings needed a bit of impetus they have lost wickets. Adil Rashid has walked into the middle. He can bat a bit however, he needs to keep his cool and make sure he plays risk-free cricket and supports Bethell and take this innings as deep as possible without England getting bowled out.

Harshit Rana has been superb today. He did take a bit of pasting early on in his innings when he was bowling to Salt. However, once Salt was dismissed Rana found his groove and picked up three wickets. He made use of the bounce in the wicket superbly. He worked in and around that hard-length are which the English batters struggled to deal with. Also, one more impressive thing is how quick he has been able to bowl under the heat in different spells. This is demanding conditions as Rana would be exposed in ODI format.

Harshit Rana gets another one. Liam Livingstone could not hold it together. He was hit by a bumper the ball before and the following delivery he charged down the track and played a swipe across the line against Rana to get a feather to the keeper. England have now lost six wickets and their innings have gone nowhere. After the start they got it is just poor batting from England. They kept losing wickets. Some were soft dismissals while some were pressure inflicted by India. Brydon Carse has walked into the middle. Still, plenty of overs left in this innings and England needs to get at least 280 to give themselves a chance.

Axar Patel gets Jos Buttler. It is a massive wicket under the circumstances in this game. It was up to Buttler to take England to a good total but with now he is gone England has to restart their rebuild again. As per the wicket, it was a pretty soft dismissal. It was not as short as Buttler anticipated and he tried to pull the ball to get the top edge and ball looped and fine-leg took a simple catch. Liam Livingstone has walked into the middle. Ideally, he would have preferred to come after the 40th over but here he is and now he needs to adapt to the situation.

Buttler has got to his half-century here. It has been a top-notch innings from the skipper however, his job is only half-done. He needs to get to that three-digit mark if England needs to get to any competitive total. There will be dew in the evening which will make batting easier for India so England also has to factor that in when they reach the final overs and assess how much they want to get. At this point, 330-340 should be a good total on this wicket. But for England to get there they need this partnership to bat another 7-8 overs and there is Livingstone to come who can do damage as well in the final overs.

It has been interesting how Rohit has been able to use Axar and Jadeja in the same team. While they are two different players essentially the role they play is the same as left-arm spinners batting down the order. However, Rohit has been able to find a role for both of them in the same team and use it differently. Dinesh Karthik in one of his shows explains the difference between both of them as Jadeja tends to undercut the ball more while Jadeja tends to use the overspin and on different wickets, one skill can be more valuable than the other one even on these subcontinent wickets in which some are made with black soil and some with red.

Buttler is batting well here. He did play a few good innings in the T20I series however, as the tournament went on he tapered off. Today he seems to be a man on a mission. He has come in when England was in a tricky situation but he steered that phase with composure. He nudged a few for singles and got himself in and once he was comfortable with the pace of the wicket he went after Kuldeep Yadav. He is a very capable player of scoring a three-digit score in this format of the game but for that to happen he needs support from the end.

Rohit Sharma has brought back Mohammed Shami in for a spell here which is a good move. For the last 10-15 minutes Buttler seemed to pick up the spinners better. He was rocking back on the back foot and was hitting Kuldeep with ease hence just a bit of change for a few overs might upset the rhythm of the batter. Having said that Kuldeep did look a tad bit rusty today. He is coming on the back of a groin injury as well. When he is operating at his full tilt it is his wrong-un which has a lot of deception however, today Root and Buttler have played him with a lot of ease.

England have lost four wickets now and are exposed to the spin of Ravindra Jadeja. The left-arm spinner is the master of this passage of play. It is all about being subtle and not losing your concentration as a batter against him. Ball after ball he will put it up there and offer that single for the batter. However, there will be an odd delivery that will have that subtle variation of increased pace or arm ball or just a bit of change at the crease in delivery point which will beat the batter. Jacob Bethall has walked in and he has to do a lot of work and has to face a lot of spin here.

Joe Root is settling in nicely here. He is rotating the strike and getting those quick singles nicely. This is what we did not see much in the 2023 World Cup from him when his form suffered as well as England's performances. With two spinners operating and with the wicket not offering much and three quick wickets this is the right thing to do. However, as we update Ravindra Jadeja has picked up Root here. Root playing on the back foot was looking to push the ball however, the delivery from Jadeja seemed to be an arm ball that went straight with the arm Root was trapped in front of the wicket.

We are done with the water break here and the passage had everything in it. We have seen fireworks initially and then India coming back for wickets. The game is in the balance now and it might be at a standstill for a bit with middle overs coming up. Both Root and Buttler seem to be intent on building a partnership and things are going well thus far. One thing the introduction of Joe Root will do in this side is they will be equipped better to play spin bowling. Most of the English players pick ball from length while Root has the ability to do the same by picking from hand.

Since Hardik Pandya has come into the attack and he has bowled nicely here. It is an ideal surface for someone like him who bends his back and tries to slip and an odd slower one or bumper. As the first change second change bowler is the perfect role in the middle phase of ODI cricket. India might not have missed him during the 2023 World Cup however, the balance he brings to this side is invaluable chipping in with 6-8 overs in the middle not giving away too many runs conceding a wicket here and there. As we update Kuldeep Yadav has come into the attack.

England has lost another one here and it is Rana once again who gets the breakthrough. It was a short one around the rib-cage area and Brook gloved it to the wicket-keeper. Perks of playing on a red-soil wicket where there is always extra bounce. England looked like they were in control of this game and suddenly now they have lost their way. Joe Root is in the middle alongside Jos Buttler both of them need to stitch a partnership here and both are experienced enough to do it. However, we have seen in the ODI World Cup in 2023 that when England was in these situations they continued to attack and get bundled out for below par score.

India has got the breakthrough here not with the bowler picking it but a run out. Given how Salt and Duckett were batting it seemed like the only way they could have got that one. Salt timed one to the point fielder and tried to take runs as it hit the gap. They did get to two however, Salt looked for the third one meanwhile Duckett turned his back on him. Iyer who chased the ball to the boundary pulled it back and threw as Salt was halfway up the pitch and Rahul removed the bails. As we update now Ben Duckett is gone. Harshit Rana has been brought into the attack and Duckett tried to pull it and got the top edge and Yashasvi Jaiswal took an exceptional catch turning back running forward and diving at mid-wicket

Axar Patel has come into the attack and he tossed one up and Salt slammed him down the ground for a boundary. This looks like one of those high-scoring games we are accustomed to seeing in ODI cricket, especially in Indian conditions. 8 overs into the game it already feels like anything under 350 will be hard to defend on this ground. A spare of thought for Harshit who made his T20I debut in conditions which suited him and contrarily these are the worst possible conditions any bowler would want to make his debut on for ODI. Also this wicket will test the Indian attack on how they can get wickets on the pitch like this in the absence of Bumrah.

England's batters are now more proactive against the Indian seamers. The last six balls for England have extracted 26 runs against Rana. They have realised there is nothing much in the wicket and both Salt and Duckett are taking their chances now it is up to India to respond on what needs to be done. The wicket has nothing much in it for fast bowling and India has three spin options at their disposal. Axar Patel is immensely experienced in bowling in the powerplay and it might be a dangling carrot decision but it might just give the breakthrough India is looking for.

Both Salt and Duckett are enjoying the batting conditions. The moment Rana missed his mark Salt went after him. There is no seam moment for the bowlers hence Rana has to be dead accurate with his lines and lengths. Since we are starting at noon and it is February even if there would have been any moisture it would have been dried out by now. While Shami on the other end has been very good. He just kept nibbling away with precise lengths to Duckett around that off-stump and extracting whatever little there is on offer. Tough day out there for India it seems like at least for now.

Mohammed Shami and Harshit Rana have taken the new ball for India here. There wasn't a lot of seam moment in that opening over however, there is clearly bounce in the wicket which the red soil tends to give to the bowlers. Both Phil Salt and Ben Duckett if they spend a bit of time in the middle will absolutely love the conditions here. India need to find early breakthroughs here. There are two slips in place but the bowlers have hardly pitched up anything to look for swing mostly its about hitting good length and make that ball move of the seam.

The national anthems are done. The crowd is filling in nicely, and the atmosphere is excellent for some good old-fashioned ODI cricket. Unlike Suryakumar Yadav, Rohit Sharma has opted for an extra fast bowling option, and it will be interesting to see how that pans out.

Traditionally, this hasn't been a high-scoring ground, the reason being the dimensions. 69m and 68m square boundaries, 75m straight boundary. We're playing on a red-soil pitch and it looks good for batting. It's rock hard, there's a bit of grass, but there's no moisture and it's dry. Not a lot in it for the bowlers, but this being a red soil pitch, spin will come into play later on. It's a good cricket pitch and a high score can be expected. There's some breeze blowing over and the spinners would like to bowl from that end. Dew could be a factor and the captain winning the toss could ideally look to bowl first

We wanted to bowl first, but it doesn't matter a lot. Need to be aggressive with the ball at the start and then need to do well later. Nice to get some time off, it's a fresh start and this is a great chance to do well. It's very important to get some gametime, try and maximize whatever opportunity we have. Jaiswal and Harshit are making his debut, unfortunately Virat isn't playing, he had a knee problem last night.

We will bat first today. Nice thing going in the dressing room, looking forward to these ODis and we're happy to welcome back Joe Root. The morale has been good, everyone's good and the Baz has looked after us well. We're playing against a top-side in their conditions, a tough test ahead of the CT. We're playing 3 spacers and an extra spin-bowling all-rounder.

Skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will also be under the scanner after their dismal performances in the New Zealand series last year as well as the Border Gavaskar Trophy. This led to them playing Ranji for their respective states but they failed to create much impact in the domestic circuit as well.

With the pitch expected to assist pacers, India will probably look to include Mohammed Shami, Arshdeep Singh or Harshit Rana in the lineup. With the red soil assisting tweakers as well, expect India to hand a debut cap to spinner Varun Chakravarthy who is coming off a hot T20I series win against England.

It is new pitch at the VCA Stadium. The pitch will have good bounce and can expect a 280-300 runs total. The spinners will get assistance because of the red soil. India will be tempted to play Varun along with one spin-bowling all-rounder and wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

India has a selection dilemma between wicket-keepers KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant for the ODI series.  While both are capable and have performed well, captain Rohit Sharma emphasized the importance of continuity, noting Rahul's consistent performance in the role over recent years.  The team will need to decide whether to stick with Rahul or give Pant a chance.
