‘He knows exactly what to do’: Faf du Plessis backs Virat Kohli to come out of lean patch

With Kohli having a series to forget at Australia where he could only make 190 runs in 5 Tests, there have been calls for the stalwart to retire from the longest format. Du Plessis, however, felt that retirement is a very personal choice.

Virat Kohli’s former Royal Challengers Bengaluru teammate and skipper Faf du Plessis on Wednesday said that the Indian knows what exactly to do in order to come back to form.

With Kohli having a series to forget at Australia where he could only make 190 runs in 5 Tests, there have been calls for the stalwart to retire from the longest format. Du Plessis, however, felt that retirement is a very personal choice.

“That is very, very personal. No one can speak to you about when that time is (up) as a player, you’ll know,” du Plessis told PTI.

“I know someone like him is super super motivated, he’s gone through it all before, so he knows exactly what to do,” he added.

The former South Africa player also talked about his won decision to hang up his boots.

“It is different for every player. Every player needs to answer that question. I remember when that time was for me,” he said.

“I just knew that certainly from the Test cricket perspective for me. I didn’t have that same hunger and drive anymore and I felt that that stage certainly for me was a good time to let new guys come in and also step into the T20 world. I wanted to do that at the stage where I still felt like I was on top of my game,” he added.

On Tuesday, former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh had also come out in support of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Kohli after the duo was at the receiving end of a lot of criticism after India’s 1-3 loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

“We are talking about our greats, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma; we are saying very bad things about them,” Yuvraj told PTI.

“People forget what they have achieved in the past. They are one of the greatest cricketers of this time. Okay, they lost; they did not play good cricket. They are getting hurt more than us,” he added.
