England vs West Indies 1st Test Day 5 Highlights:

22:30 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Significant win for West Indies

West Indies have claimed a huge win as Test cricket returns. A huge moment for Jason Holder and his men in Southampton as they clinch the win in the final hour, with only the tail left to come after the last unbeaten pair. Since 2000, this is only the second time West Indies have won a Test in England. They have taken a 1-0 lead in the series with two matches to go.

22:25 (IST)12 Jul 2020
West Indies win

Campbell gets a single. West Indies win by 4 wickets.

22:24 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Four! Scores level

Campbell fires! Four! Cut away with disdain. Stokes errs in his line again. Scores are level.

22:21 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Campbell hit again!

Campbell hit again! Struck flush on the helmet. Wood enquires if he is fine after that blow. Physios come out to check on him. A concussion test is mandatory after a blow to the head these days. Campbell looks fine to continue, pumps fists with his skipper.

22:18 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Campbell hangs in, Holder steals runs

Stokes giving it all he has got. England giving it all they have got in this final passage of play. Holder and Campbell look to hang in there, not do anything silly. They are within reach now, they do not want to expose their tail to this barrage with 10 more to get. Holder calls for two with a flick on the leg side. Campbell hobbles. But hobbles well enough to get back for two. West Indies are being stretched but they are getting there brick by brick. Stokes has face dug in hands again.Campbell, in obvious pain, is hanging in. He gets a run with a push to mid off and hobble to non striker's end. WI 194/6, 6 more to win

22:13 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Campbell defends

Campbell is not allowed a runner. Stokes brings his field in. Wood comes back on and fires unplayable missiles past Campbell's bat. Is this another twist in the tail? Campbell plays out five dot balls. WI 190/6, need 10 more to win

22:08 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Campbell comes out with injured toe

Campbell comes out with an injured toe. Will the bowlers target his toe with yorkers? WI 189/6 need 11 to win

22:04 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Blackwood out for 95

Blackwood upper cuts for four again! How he has made that shot his own today. No third man and England can look at the ball rolling away much like they are seeing the match slip away from their grasp. But tragedy for Blackwood! He is caught out! He falls for 95. What a knock this has been from him. WI 189/6, need 11 more to win

22:01 (IST)12 Jul 2020
15 runs away from win

Blackwood moves into his 90s with a single off Anderson. England are staring at this match slipping away. Holder follows suit by getting in another single. Loud cheers from the Windies dugout. Easy runs coming now. Two on the leg side with a flick from Holder. WI 185/5 after 60 overs, 15 runs away from a historic win under Holder

21:57 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Holder gives nothing away

Stokes to Holder again. Holder gives nothing away, blocks everything with a straight bat. England cannot find a way through. Maiden over. Blackwood, on 89, to be on strike for the next over. WI 180/5

21:53 (IST)12 Jul 2020
20 more to win

Anderson bowls as we enter what will be the last hour of the Test. What a briiliant advertisement for the game this match - the first in 120 days - has been in going down to the final hour. Blackwood on 89*. England want to keep Holder on strike. WI need 20 more to win

21:46 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Holder pulls for four - first 4 in six overs

Holder pulls Stokes. Four! The first four in six overs. A statement made by Holder on that occasion. Belief for West Indies. Frustration for Stokes. Relief for Campbell in the dressing room, who will be hoping he will not be required to bat with an injured toe. WI 178/5, 22 more needed to winDrinks are called for. With one hour and more to be played, surely, West Indies are too close to throw it away now.Big swipe from Jason Holder to hammer Ben Stokes for a four.22 needed for West Indies...

21:41 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Running a problem for this pair

Anderson bowls. Communication in running between Holder and Blackwood is leaving a lot to be desired. ian Bishop points out the tallest man in the team is now batting with the shortest man in the team. A couple of close run out opportunities for England, but they've been safe so far. Runs coming in singles now. Holder playing everything with a straight bat. Anderson squaring him up with some late movement. WI 173/5, need 27 more to win

21:37 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Not much batting left after this pair for WI

Stokes bowls to Holder. Never before have the captains of two sides dismissed each other on all four occasions in a match. A mix-up between Holder and Blackwood but tbhey make it in time. What is concerning for West Indies is that there is not much batting to come after this partnership. Campbell reportedly has a bleeding toe. Apart from him, there are only Roach, Gabriel and Alzarri to come. Holder and Blackwood need to hold firm. West Indies are in control, but this Test could slip out easily. WI 171/5, need 29 more to win

21:33 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Big individual battles

Blackwood upper cuts again. Well controlled though. Guides it to third man for a single to get Holder on strike. Important moment for West Indies, this. They need to ensure they do not let the Dowrich wicket lead to a deluge. Archer is also brought back into the attack. Stokes and Archer vs Holder and Blackwood - this fight is reaching its climax with some strong characters at the centre of it. WI 169/5, need 31 more to win

21:27 (IST)12 Jul 2020
32 to win in tense chase

Holder comes in. Captain vs captain. Holder got Stokes twice in this match, Stokes got him once. Can he do it again and throw the chase wide open just as it looked WI had it under control? WI 168/5, 32 more to win. Holder is the No 8 though, with opener Campbell still indisposed to come out after retiring hurt courtesy Archer.

21:25 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Stokes to the rescue

Dowrich goes! This time nothing saves him. Stokes is denied the first time, this time surely he has got his man. Excellent ball moving away from Dowrich gets him to edge through to the keeper. Is this Ben Stokes's time? Dowrich falls for 20. WI 168/5, need 32 more to win

21:23 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Wicket! But no ball!

Stokes brings himself on. He has produced magic so many times in the recent past for England, can he stand up and deliver another in this moment of need? Dowrich tries to go after him, trying to release some of the pressure Archer put him under. Does not get the right connection. And he falls! Tries an attacking shot too many. Gets and edge and the catch is taken at slip. But another anti-climax! Replays show Stokes bowled a no ball. Dowrich survives.

21:18 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Archer keeps sizzling

Dowrich gets into a tangle as Archer fires it in at him. Falls on his back in the over, lucky to not fall on to his stumps. Archer is keeping the batsmen hopping. Dowrich doing his best to survive. England review against Dowrich now. England lose the review. The ball had brushed his waist, no bat on that. West Indies march on. WI 164/4, need 36 to win

21:14 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Blackwood now the highest scorer in the Test

Blackwood gets another four off Wood. Firmly hit between the fielders on the off side. This is the highest individual score in this Test now. Wood gets one to climb on to Blackwood, he fends it away well. What character Blackwood has shown in this innings! Gets another 4 runs with a lofted drive, gets to 80, and this is now his highest score in 5 years. West Indies needed a saviour after Archer had ripped through their top order in the morning, they have found one in Blackwood. WI 162/4, need 38 more to win

21:08 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Blackwood drives beautifully again

Archer continues in full throttle but Blackwood has the last laugh. 50 partnership between him and Dowrich comes up with an exquisite cover drive for four. Blackwood moves to 71*. Less than 50 left to win now. West Indies can smell victory. Blackwood can smell the leather as Archer digs another one in at him. WI 154/4, need 46 more to win

21:02 (IST)12 Jul 2020
England review against Blackwood

Good pace from Wood as well. The batsmen are giving Wood and Archer a lot of respect at the beginning of the session. Blackwood shows the first sign of disrespect and late in-swing almost makes him regret that. An lbw shout against him. England review. They will go for everything now. Replays show it would have missed the stumps by a mile. England lose one of their three reviews. Blackwood looking to free his arms a little more now. WI 149/4, need 51 more to win

20:59 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Blackwood, Dowrich re-settling in

Archer keeps his length as short as it was before Tea. Another ball like the one that saw the end of Roston Chase will throw this game wide open. Blackwood presents a compact defence. WI 147/4, need 53 more to win

20:55 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Reverse swing enters equation

Wood and Archer from the two ends. Stokes goes for extra pace to start off the final session. Can Wood justify his place in the XI with an inspirational final session spell? An inside edge is induced off Dowrich's bat at the end of the over as reverse swing rears its head. WI 146/4, need 54 more to win

20:48 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Last session begins

Jofra Archer starts proceedings after Tea. More than 40 overs are left in this match. A draw, therefore, is out of the question. West Indies need 57. England need 6 wickets. Archer has got 3 already, can he get a few early strikes? Blackwood, on 65, his highest score in three years, propelling this chase. Blackwood gets the scoring started with a single. Can the Windies hold their nerves in this final session? WI 145/4, need 55 more to win

20:44 (IST)12 Jul 2020
What a return for Test cricket

It has been 121 days since the last Test. Could we have asked for a better formula for the first match since resumption? The underdogs chasing an away win in the last session? Possibly not. What an advertisement for the game. A few minutes away from the final session now.

20:28 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Tea - 108 runs and 1 wicket in 2nd session

James Anderson to bowl what will probably be the last over before Tea. Dowrich stands firm in that over. Runs keep coming on either side with pushes and prods. West Indies move resuloutely on. Tea is signalled. West Indies go in at 143/4, needing 57 runs to win the 1st Test in the final session.

20:22 (IST)12 Jul 2020
61 more to win

Change of bats for Blackwood, who had a broken bat. Lots of damage on his bat from Archer today. Blackwood himself has inflicted a lot of damage on the other England bowlers though. WI 139/4, need 61 more to win

20:15 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Blackwood the unlikely hero

Blackwood, who might have been sitting this Test out had Darren Bravo and Shimron Hetmyer been available for selection, is the one leading this 4th innings chase. Anderson has ramped up his pace a bit too, bowling in the higher 80s (mph) now. Blackwood, in total control now, drives him back over mid off for four. None of the other English bowlers have come close to having an impact like Archer in this innings. WI 138/4, need 62 more to win

20:11 (IST)12 Jul 2020
6 easy runs off Wood

Wood comes on. That's the end of that Archer spell then. The batsmen will heave a sigh of relief at that. Wood, replacing him, also keeps his length short. Not directed with as much control though, Blackwood can sway out of the way easily enough. Blackwood upper cuts again, one of the shots he has played without fear in this innings. England are losing a bit of their energy on the field again as the batsmen find it easy to navigate the Wood over. WI 134/4, need 66 more to win

20:06 (IST)12 Jul 2020
50 for Blackwood

James Anderson brought into the attack in Bess's place for one spell before the imminent end of the session. And there is an edge running away for four. Blackwood gets to his 50 with that. His 11th Test 50, one of his most important ones, his first since August 2017. Blackwood attacks Anderson later in the over. Punches a four on the leg side. WI 128/4, need 72 more to win

19:59 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Archer strikes again? Decision overturned.

'The West Indian on the other side is doing well,' says Holding. Blackwood, on 47, is kept hopping on his toes by Archer. Dowrich is given out off Archer! Another venomous bouncer resulting in a wicket? Dowrich refers quickly. Where did that strike him? On the elbow, the DRS shows. Dowrich survives. Four out of six deliveries in every Archer over is a venomous bouncer at the moment. Blackwood plays an unseemly upper cut to get off strike. Getting off strike is the best strategy against Archer in this sort of a mood. The last ball of the over brings a boundary for Dowrich with a flick. WI 120/4, need 80 more to win

19:56 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Rallying round the West Indies

England take a Review as Bess gets an lbw shout going against Dowrich. Remains Not out. WI 113/4, 87 more to win

19:51 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Archer sizzles

Blackwood plays a glorious drive to restore some confidence to the Windies side. He has moved on to 46*. Stokes gives Archer another close catcher as he senses an opportunity to regain control. Archer's figures now 3/29, and he had also accounted for Campbell retiring hurt. Blackwood goes for the upper cut as Jofra pitches it into him again. Misses. Gets some words said to him from Archer. Tense moments in the chase. Archer digs it into Blackwood again, Blackwood takes a tumble. Test cricket at its finest! WI 109/4, 91 more to win

19:44 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Jofra's special delivery

Dowrich comes out at 7. Still no John Campbell, the retired hurt batsman. What a ball that was from Archer to get England back into the game that was!

19:41 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Archer strikes again! Chase is gone.

Archer strikes! He makes the impact England were praying for. Another venomous bouncer digged into Chase. Chase edges and it is an easy catch for the keeper. England have their first reason to smile in the session. West Indies lose Chase after a brave stand between him and Blackwood. Will this tilt the balance again? WI 100/4

19:40 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Time-out

Again, the physisos come out to attend to Blackwood. He seems to have a problem with his right eye. Another medical time-out, we've had a few of those so far today.

19:35 (IST)12 Jul 2020
WI 100/3 - 100 more to win

Bess had troubled Blackwood enormously earlier in the day. He is being less effective in his second spell. A single moves West Indies along to the halfway point in the chase. 100/3, another 100 runs to win.

19:32 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Big knock from Blackwood

Dom Bess, who got decent turn earlier today, is thrown the ball as play restarts. Archer continues from the other end. Blackwood has a FC average of 33. He has moved on to 38. Big innings from him given the circumstances. WI 98/3, need 102 more to win

19:24 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Halfway point of session - WI gain control after Lunch

Blackwood attacks a short ball from Archer. An upper cut for four! Archer keeps pounding them in short. WI reach 95/3 at the hour-mark, 105 more to win as a drinks break is taken. England need an inspiration.

19:19 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Another one! Burns the guilty party this time.

Another chance missed! Ball flies to Burns but he cannot get hands to it because of how fast it was coming at him. Three chances have been missed by England in the last 15 minutes or so. First Buttler, then Crawley, now Burns. Is this the passage of play they will look back on and regret later? Stokes has his head in hands as that chance goes begging. WI 90/3, 110 more to win

19:16 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Big run out chance missed

Stout defence from Chase as Archer keeps pitching it into him. Big Miss! Run out chance! Crawley, the 21-year-old fumbles in collecting the ball and England throw another huge chance away! Both batsmen were running towards the same end but they had time to recover as the fielder fumbled. WI 83/3, need 117 more to win

19:11 (IST)12 Jul 2020
West Indies gain control

Batsmen keep pushing the tempo. Singles being converted into doubles. The England fielders being put under pressure after Lunch. Stokes and Archer are firing them in, West Indies batsmen not falling into the trap. They are giving the good balls respect and finding the gaps whenever they get the loose balls. WI 82/3, need 118 more to win

19:07 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Archer comes back

Archer comes into the attack. He put a big dent into the batting order in the morning. Can he follow up with another blistering spell? 50 partnership comes up between Chase and Blackwood. Archer serves up some hostile bouncers straightaway. WI 78/3, 122 more to win

19:00 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Another injury time-out

Runs keep coming for the pair as Stokes and Anderson continue without much impact. Replays show Buttler dropped a catch earlier in the over. The ball had brushed the gloves as it had gone past the batsman and Buttler did not hold on to the catch. Blackwood, meanwhile, has gone down in the field in discomfort. The physios come out and there is another interruption. WI 73/3, need 127 more to win

18:53 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Since 2000, West Indies have won 1 Test in England

West Indies have won a Test on English soil only once since the turn of the century - on the 2017 tour. Shai Hope had been the hero for West Indies in that match. Three years later, they are close to another. Chase and Blackwood are taking them close to a position from which they can strike in the last session. Still, all three outcomes possible in this Test. Anderson partners Stokes.

18:51 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Stokes brings himself on

Ben Stokes brings himself on to bowl for the first time in the 25th over. Can he land a key blow? England are losing sight of this Test a bit at the moment, they need another inspirational moment to wrest back the momentum. WI 68/3

18:46 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Positive intent from WI

Some positive intent shown by Blackwood in Anderson's over. Cuts with power. Stokes, at point, puts in a dive to cut off four runs. Good running between the wickets as well by Chase and Blackwood, who have now added a 39-run partnership. WI 66/3, need 134 to win

18:42 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Chase attacks

Anderson introduced. Runs come in his over as well. England, meanwhile, have two substitutes on. Both Wood and Archer have left the field. Bess and Anderson, the only two specialist bowlers, are operating from either end. West Indies are capitalizing on this relatively toothless start to the session and are bringing up runs at every opportunity. Roston Chase lofts Bess over mid on to stamp the Windies' authority on proceedings. WI 64/3, need 136 more to win

18:33 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Runs

Mark Wood has left the field after having taken a tumble in his follow-through. West Indies have started the second session looking more comfortable than they were in the morning. Four more runs added in the over. How long before Archer is thrown the ball again? 54/3

18:30 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Blackwood drives for four

England persist with Wood. Relief runs for Blackwood as he drives an overpitched ball to extra cover for four. 50 comes up for the West Indies as Blackwood gets a single. WI 50/3 after 20 overs

18:26 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Blackwood living on the edge

Bess is getting a decent amount of turn on this Day 5 pitch. Blackwood is getting all cramped up against the spinner. Blackwood survives narrowly off the last ball! He gets an edge, Stokes, at slip, anticipates the shot and moves to his right, the shot was not good enough and it goes to Stokes's right and he cannot catch that. Big chance goes abegging for England. WI 45/3

18:22 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Runs come off Wood

More runs in Wood's next over as well. Wood gets late movement to go past Blackwood's bat. Goes past Chase's bat narrowly as well later in the over. WI 42/3, 158 to win

18:17 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Bess troubles Blackwood

Bess bowls from the other end. Stokes holds himself back for now. Atherton says Bess is a good bowler to have because Blackwood is on strike. On cue, there are lbw shouts against Blackwood. Still, 38/3

18:14 (IST)12 Jul 2020
162 more to win

Wood starts proceedings after Lunch. Blackwood gets hit on the waist first ball, and there are half-hearted shouts already. Blackwood flicks on the leg side to bring the first runs after the break. Wood again strays with his line and Chase gets going as well. WI 38/3

18:08 (IST)12 Jul 2020
All set for Afternoon session

West Indies need 165 to win. England need 7 wickets. 73 overs still scheduled for the day. So not much chance that this shall peter into a draw. Who will show the bigger hunger? Who will come up with the bigger hearts? 5 wickets fell in what was a highly eventful morning session. What is in store in the next one?

17:44 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Campbell's injured toe

West Indies aare effectively 4 down at the moment with John Campbell having hobbled off after getting hit on the toe by an Archer yorker. Looks highly likely at the moment that his services will be required at some point in the day.

17:32 (IST)12 Jul 2020
Lunch - WI 35/3

The morning session is over. West Indies have scored 35/3 in 15 overs. Chase and Blackwood the men in the middle. Archer and Wood have sizzled in this morning session. Can the West Indies middle order fight back in the two sessions that remain? They need 165 more to win.

17:29 (IST)12 Jul 2020
England review

Bess appeals. England review.

West Indies have never lost a Test chasing 200 in the fourth innings. That could change today if the morning shows the day on Day 5. However, the one thing West Indies have improved on in recent years - and this is possibly the only aspect of their game they have improved in the last 30 years - they bat deep these days. So, the fight is still on!

Meanwhile, the Chase and Hope puns are out on social media.

17:26 (IST)12 Jul 2020
WI need 169 to win

Dom Bess is operating with Mark Wood, as we come towards the end of the first session. Chase and Blackwood taking the runs from wherever they can get. Archer has been the star of the Day 5 so far though. WI 31/3

Crawley, 22, missed out on his maiden test century as he was dismissed for 76 after his attempted flick off the pads flew straight to Alzarri Joseph, who took a good catch in his follow through. Jos Buttler was fortunate after a leg-before decision to Holder was overturned on review but he departed in the following over, his stumps sent cartwheeling by Joseph. Shannon Gabriel dismissed Dom Bess and Ollie Pope in quick succession to leave England tottering before Jofra Archer and Mark Wood saw them through to stumps at 284-8.
