World Cup: Aiden Markram’s rollercoaster journey from a deflated young man to South Africa’s mainstay
A 17-year-old Aiden Markram is at a social gathering with his family, thinking if he should bother playing the sport he loves more than anything else. In the final year of his school and bearing the frustration of the U19 provincial team rejection, he is confused and deflated as per one of the family friends, in whom Markram confides at a breaking point.
Pierre de Bruyn remembers the flat response he had for Markram: “No. You can’t make that decision. You just can’t.”
A former first-class cricketer himself, de Bruyn would offer Markram an alternative. To come with him to the University of Pretoria and join the local cricket academy where he coached. The intervention seems to have worked wonders for the Proteas number four at the ongoing ODI World Cup. Barring the off night against the Netherlands that saw the entire batting lineup crumble, Markram has helped South Africa resurface as one of the title contenders. He scored the fastest hundred in tournament history against Sri Lanka followed by a match-winning fifty against five-time champions Australia. (READ MORE)

Cricket World Cup brings South African fan back to Indian roots

Maharaj in to bowl the next and Wood has nailed him for a four and a huge six in back to back balls. The crowd love it!! And would you know it!! That's another maximum!! And another!!! Outstanding effort from Rassie in the deep but that might have just crossed the ropes. Turns out that it's a save. And finally, Maharaj finds a way through Wood as he is bowled. And it's all over. reece Topley is injured so can't bat. SA beat ENG by 230 runs
Rabada in the attack and that's another one which is skied and subsequently dropped. Atkinson does not care and advances down the tracks to get a four!! Timed the next one for four more!! These two are frustrating the SA bowlers. Late adjustment next and he gets the 5th away for four again!!! Ends the over by hitting it straight down the ground for 4 more!! Huge over for SA. 18 from it.

Maharaj introduced and Wood has a mistimed hit again but it falls just over Miller. Gets down on his knees next and has smacked the 4th over deep midwicket for his 3rd six!! 10 from this one.
Ngidi in to bowl the next over and Atkinson pushes but gets no runs. Great fielding by Miller to deny a single next. Lovely shot by Atkinson to get a boundary. Another drop. QDK calls for it but can't get to it. Might have hurt his back in the process. 7 from this over.
Jansen back in the attack and Gus Atkinson takes a single from the second delivery. Mark Wood on strike and he has smacked a four off the 3rd delivery. The next one, he has hit it straight into the night sky and falls just inside the ropes for a six!! Not going down without a fight. Ohhhh!!!! He's been dropped by Hendricks next!! Ends the over with a six!!
Ngidi brought back into the attack as SA try to wrap this up quickly. Willey has other ideas though as he smacks the pacer for a huge six!! 100 up for ENG and here's another wicket gone. What a catch by Rabada!!!
AND there goes another one as Coetzee strikes again. Reeza Hendricks in place for the perfect catch as England are in the danger of getting bowled before reaching 3 figures.
Rabada continues and starts with two dots. Rashid tries to play the 3rd but it evades his willow. Unplayable deliveries from the SA pacer. Rashid gets a shot away, clears mid on but just 2.
Coetzee starts the 14th and Rashid navigates the first two balls. 2 dots to start. Swings at the 3rd but it's over his head and straight to the keeper. Finally gets his bat to it and it's over mid on for 4!! Ends the over with 3 as the fielder saves a boundary. Decent over for ENG.
Rabada continues and he has just gone through Wiley for a dot!! What a jaffa. Unlucky next as the 3rd nips back in, gets an edge but runs away for 4. Even the batter does not know what just happened. 4 from this one.
And what do you know!!! Coetzee has struck again. Brook given LBW and he reviews. The impact is umpire's call and ENG are going down in flanes!!!
Coetzee continues and he has his revenge on Jos Buttler for those big hits in his earlier over. The ENG captain gets a nick and de Kock takes a catch behind the stumps. South Africa absolutely bossing it.
Rabada continues and Harry Brook caredully navigates the pace. Nothing from the first 5 deliveries as the over ends as a maiden. Nicely bowled.
On to the 10th over and Harry Brook had gotten some hits in the previous one with a 4 and a 6 to help ENG cross 50. Now, Gerald Coetzee will bowl the last over in the first powerplay. Starts with a wide ball. A bit of delay now as the bowler has gone down with a problem. Looks like a bit of issue with his studs. He's fine to continue though. Gift for Buttler next and he flicks for a boundary to his leg side. Lovely shot to follow that and that's another four, straight down the ground. Ends the over with a huge six!! 17 from this over.
Ishan Kishan was the first to take to the nets alongside Virat Kohli. After batting off Ravichandran Ashwin and Mohammed Siraj for a good 20 minutes, the southpaw was seen taking his helmet off and rubbing the back of his head as he walked to the side in anguish. It was no bouncer that brought an end to the Indian left hander's net session but a honeybee's bite under the floodlights, confirms the BCCI media manager. (From Rahul Pandey)
With Hardik Pandya out of the picture, the Indian head coach had termed Suryakumar Yadav as of the big alternatives for the game against New Zealand. That however seems under doubts now with Surya having picked a blow to his right wrist while batting a full-toss off throwdown specialist Raghu. The support staff are nursing an ice pack as the Indian swashbuckling batter looks in some discomfort. (From Rahul Pandey and Image by Devendra Pandey)
GONE!!! Stokes can't believe it!! He chips and Rabada gets hold of the ball on his followthrough!! Huge, huge wicket for SA. Stokes is disappointed in himself as he walks back.
Jansen will continue and starts with a dot as Stokes pushes the first delivery away. Pull away hard next and he's off the mark with a boundary!! Flicks fine next and takes a single and Brook can see this over off. Nothing off the last 2 deliveries as over yields 5.
Rabada in the attack now and straightaway beats Harry Brook. Brook gets a bat to the second delivery but finds a fielder. No runs so far in this over. Finally gets one away to mid off and takes a single. A leg bye off Stokes as the former ENG captain has yet to register a run.
Jansen again and there's an appeal for caught behind. QDK behind the stumps isn't interested but SA will still review. Looks like an edge. And yes, UltraEdge confirms it. Great review by SA. ENG lose 3rd wicket.
Ngidi steams in to bowl the 5th and Malan defends the first ball. Swings his bat at the next one but just gets an edge and hits it into the ground. Finally gets a single and Stokes will face his first ball of this edition's World Cup. Leaves the ensuing delivery. Swipes at the last ball and misses.
Jansen continues and Root pulls up at the very last moment as he makes the bowler go for his run up again. Takes a single off his leg side next and Malan is on strike. Excellent delivery to beat the batter. The next one is off the leg of Malan for a single more. And gone!!! Root flocks and perfectly finds the leg slip fielder. Miler makes no mistakes and Root has to depart
Ngidi in to bowl the 3rd and Bairstow has smashed him for a boundary!! England flying off the blocks now. Up in the aiiiirrrr and an der Dussen takes a great catch. Cool and collected. Bairstow walks back.
Marco Jansen will bowl the next and that's two back to back times Bairstow has tried for a flick and failed. Maybe, he needs a change of strategy? A leg bye next as Bairstow goes off strike. Malan now faces Jansen and flicks him for a four to start. Ohhh!! Looks close for a LBW. Umpire is poker faced so SA will review. Umpire's call and Malan survives.
We are back for the chase and England have a huge mountain to climb. Bairstow and Malan open the attack and Ngidi will start us off. After 4 dots, Bairstow nonchalantly flicks the fifth for a huge six. England off the mark.
Quite pleased. It was tough in the beginning to find my feet, but happy with the contribution and that partnership with Rassie. Everything happened quickly, got to know it (his inclusion) just 5 minutes before the toss. Needed that partnership (with Rassie) after losing de Kock early. It (Klaasen's knock) was an incredible innings. Was much needed for us as we were under pressure when we lost Markram and Miller in quick succession. We back our bowlers to defend it, need to field well.
Last over have produced only five runs for South Africa or else it would have been more than 400 to chase now it is exactly 400. The innings were going in the balance between both sides until Klassen decided it wouldn't anymore. The way he smashed the bowling was thrilling to watch he hit the bowlers on all sides of the park. It is something which happens at Wankhede usually to bowling attacks which do not have the proper skills to bowl at death and England certainly does not have a good death bowler. It is hard to see how 30 minutes of break will help England to get their heads right and try and chase this well with calmness and composure. But it is doable these are top conditions to bat but the problem is handling pressure and keeping heads. We all saw what happened yesterday and we may something similar today. Stay with us for all the live action from the second innings it is going to be a top chase.
Brilliant ton from Klassen while he was struggling with cramps he managed to score a boundary every other ball. Top class innings an innings which he will remember for a long time. It is the purest form striking something we see from the likes of Kieron Pollard or Andre Russell at this ground before. Jansen at the other end too is playing a splendid innings today. England once again are leaking too many runs at the death today and this has costed them in Delhi and looks like it taking South Africa to a above par score today. Meanwhile Jansen smashed a 50.
Klassen has changed the tempo of this game all of a sudden. Klassen who was batting normally suddenly seems like has gone into the mode where he is looking for a boundary of every ball. The England bowlers are looking a bit shellshocked now because of the assault. Jansen too has joined the party and is looking to score some quick runs. If Klassen continues to bat like this with the remaining overs left South Africa can definitely get to 350. What a player Klassen has grown to be in the last 12 months or so. Until he is striking the ball this well South Africa will always be a force to reckon with in this World Cup.
A handy cameo here from Klassen. He is someone who is known to be a dasher however, today he took a back step when he had to. He bit his time while wickets were falling at the other end. Now the platform has been set and he might slowly start to cut loose now. Jansen at the other end is capable striker of the cricket ball but as of now, he is looking to just hang around and support Klassen. It has been absorbing cricket this. The game has not gone away either way yet. Whenever it seemed like it is tilting towards one side the other party has been making a comeback.
It is fair to say that if not for his unfortunate injury during the IPL playing for RCB, Topley’s stock was on the rise and he was on his way to becoming an elite bowler. The 29-year-old will be one of the major threats when teams play against England. He is quick, strong and can swing the ball. In addition to this, he also can hit hard lengths regularly, which can draw the batsman forward and force them to be in two minds – to play the ball or leave it.
David Miller tried to hit the ball over the cover fielder of Topley however, could not get the elevation and was caught at mid-off by Ben Stokes. That is a massive wicket in the context of the game. South Africa is in a bit of a pickle at the moment and they need to build a partnership. Jansen has walked into the middle this is something which is a bit fascinating to watch from South Africa as they are one side in the tournament who play with five bowlers and six batters. Though Jansen is on the side as an all-rounder his batting is still a work in progress.
Topley comes back into the attack and strikes immediately. Aiden Markam tried to flick the ball once before in the game and he did it again now. The problem has been him trying to keep the ball in the air rather than on the ground. Jonny Bairstow who came a couple of steps forward somehow managed to pull off the catch. Stunning effort on the boundary from Bairstow. Every time it seemed like South Africa was running away with the game England chipped in with a wicket. Topley once again comes back and picks up a wicket showing his importance in this bowling attack.
How easy batting has been today? Just as we speak we have another partnership that has been put on. Markram and Klassen have got themselves in now and have created quite a launching pad here for the batters to follow. We might see the South Africans get up to at least that 350-mark anyway either side of that would leave one of the sides very disappointed. Topley is brought into the attack and he has a strapping to his bowling hand. It would be interesting to see how he would operate with that will he be able to execute his delievries properly or will he be inaccurate.
Thomas Donald Topley says he hasn’t spoken to his son yet but that they waved at each other after the latter helped guide England to their first win at the 2023 ODI World Cup in Dharamshala on Tuesday. Speaking to The Indian Express at the HPCA Stadium after the match, Don – a former player and coach himself – takes us through Reece’s 4-fer. But first, he wears a father’s cap.
“I have huge admiration for the way he keeps coming back. Lesser, better players, probably wouldn’t have come back,” says Don, who’s talking about his son’s constant bouts with injuries. “He’s had five stress fractures, he’s had a back operation, he tore his ankle at the T20 World Cup in Australia last year, then he had a terrible fall in his first IPL game.” (Read more from Rahul Pandey)
Mark Wood is not having a good day today. He is bowling his usual hard-length deliveries which are going for boundaries. There was an IPL game a few years back when he played for Chennai Super Kings against Lucknow Super Giants at the same ground where he consistently bowled hard lengths and was taken apart at a very high pace. He looked like a one-trick pony at the time and the batters feasted upon his deliveries. Today though he bowled fewer slower ones it seems like he more forcing them rather than them coming to him naturally hence accuracy has been missing on those. Rauf yesterday in his initial spells faced a similar problem against Australia but came back well in his later spells hopefully Wood would adopt today.
Some positive news for English fans as Reece Topley has walked back. Since it is an external injury he can start bowling as soon as he walks into the middle. He is an invaluable asset to this bowling attack without him the English bowling line-up would struggle to cope. Finally, some rub of the green going England's way in the last 30 minutes or so. A couple of wickets to Rashid apart from the last over Root bowling a few quiet overs from him and now Topley's return. A good passage of play for England this if they can chip in with one more wicket they will be right back in the game.
Adil Rashid strikes yet again. He picks up well-set Hendricks once again it was the slower delivery which does the trick. Unlike his previous deliveries where he was tossing the ball up slowly this time he pulled back his length giving the batter the perception that it was short enough to cut however, the ball came slower than anticipated and the batter was beaten in the air by the time he realised it was a touch closer to cut and however, went through with the shot got the bottom edge and it hit the stumps. This is top-class bowling from Rashid he has read the conditions well and is adopting his bowling nicely to it.
Expensive over from Root he gave away 16 runs in what is expected to be his final over of the day as his six overs and Topley's four made up 10 overs quota of a bowler. Reeza Hendricks too realised that it might be the last over from Root hence he started to attack the bowler. Aiden Markam has walked into the middle. The skipper for today has started the tournament really well with a century against Sri Lanka followed by a 50 against Australia. These Wankhede conditions are similar to what he will find in South Africa small boundaries and bouncy surfaces with a bit of movement with the new ball. He might enjoy batting and captaining in these conditions. South Africa from here on after the solid foundation they had must be looking to get at least 330 from here on.
Adil Rashid creates the opening finally. Van Der Dussen tried to slog sweep a delivery and got the top edge for mid-on Bairstow to take a simple catch as the ball looped in the air. Nice delivery from Rashid he pitched the ball up and bowled it slower through the air. The English leg-spinner is showing his experience here. He is bowling at a slower pace deliveries and has started to toss the ball asking the batters to make the play. Much needed breakthrough for England if they can pick another wicket here they will be right back in the game.
Is Joe Root an ideal sixth bowling option is something we might have plenty of debate about after the game. Ideally, they would like to have Ben Stokes fit and bowling but given that he is not able to bowl are they missing the balance of the side in terms of the bowling? It is not an issue raised because Topley has walked off but more often than not the format is such that the sixth bowler would be looked to chip in with a few overs. Root considering the back problems he had in the past it may be something they cannot do going forward but if the play another bowler that will lighten the batting. Four games into the tournament England still doesn't seem to get their balance right.
We are done with the first water break much much-needed one for England. Now they might come up with a proper strategy on how to go on from here on. Since Topley's injury, it seemed like things had been happening to England rather than them being in control of things. Buttler turning to Root this early might also be an indication that Topley may not come back onto the field again. Buttler also has the option of bringing Adil Rashid into the attack who may get something out of the surface because of the extra bounce on offer.
Joe Root has been brought into the attack after a one-over spell from Atkinson. It is a bit of a strange move from Buttler with two right-handers at the crease. The English players seem to be they are not enjoying the Indian heat so far in this tournament. Despite spending a considerable amount of the country you can tell the heat is creating a minor lapse of concentration even today from the bowlers. They are bowling loose deliveries as they were going longer into the spells. This is where Buttler has failed as captain as he decided not to bat first in this heat and is giving longer spells in this heat.
Buttler's captaincy in this tournament has not been up to the mark. There was plenty of talking about peaking at the right time before the tournament and this is the time England is supposed to peak if they need to have a successful campaign. They did start well but things today looked like they were on the course to make a comeback but things went down south pretty quickly for them. Buttler has been too predictable with his captaincy thus far. Today he has picked up two bowlers who bowl at extreme pace but Wankhede is one of those grounds as we have talked many times before once the batter is set it takes something extraordinary from the bowler to pick a wicket or contain the runflow.
South Africa has pulled back things nicely in the last 15-20 minutes or so. All the good work done initially is now going in vain. Both the batters are now set and once as a batter you get your eye in the runs are there for the taking. England is already a bowler short and Buttler's captaincy too has been not up to the mark this game so far yet again. It is difficult to see how they are going to make a comeback in this already 10 overs into it considering the options which Buttler has at his disposal.
Not a good sign for England as Topley has walked back. He tried to catch a ball and hurt his finger and had treatment for it. He bowled a delivery and seemed like he was not feeling well and he walked off. Joe Root has stepped in to bowl the remaining deliveries. Topley seems to be frustrated as he walks back if he can't make it back to the ground again it might be a massive problem for England because they have only come in with three seamers into the game with Stokes who might not be bowling plans before the game and is coming on back of an injury himself. This is not a surface where England can bowl a lot of spin like they did in Delhi.
How often do we see the ball continue to move this long? Especially in the Indian conditions. This is what makes Wankhede one of the unique grounds in the country. Bowlers if the bend their back will get something out of the surface throughout the innings. Finger spinners may suffer a touch in these conditions in white ball cricket but wrist spinners too will always get something out of it because of the extra bounce. Willey and Topley have started nicely here. South Africa too is being more cautions reading the conditions, unlike their previous game where they tried to go all guns blazing.
A bit of swing on offer for both the England new ball bowlers as expected at Wankhede with this new ball. South Africa might consider taking a bit of time early on here as once they get their eye there are not many surfaces in the World Cricket better than this one. This is an important game for England as a loss here may almost make their chances highly difficult for qualifying for the semifinal this early in the tournament. However, they have started well today so far with David Willey who replaced Chris Woakes. Willey has been able to get more control than they had Woakes in.
The English left-arm seamer drew the first blood here. Quinton de Cock who has been in fabulous form has now had a couple of poor outings. The dismissal was a bit controversial as it seemed the bat hit the ground initially and that was the nick in the snickometer however, from another angle, it was clear that the batter did get an edge first and then the bat hit the ground. Van Der Dussen has walked into the middle in the absence of Bavuma who is an anchor in this line-up the former would take up that role for today.
We have a cracker on our hands folks. The anthems are just done the weather seems to be a bit muggy but nothing which both teams would have not experienced by this point in time. No Temba Bavuma at the top for South Africa who was in fabulous form this year would be a huge blow. It will be interesting to see how Reeza Hendricks does. England too have made a few changes in their bowling and only we have to wait and see how they respond in this heat.
One of the typical features of this pitch in Mumbai is that it's quicker and bouncier than same other venues of India. The challenge for the quick bowlers is that they need to be fuller in length. There's a touch of moisture in the surface. It's not as hard as it usually is. I think bowling first was the right decision, says Finch. We should be in for a good contest. The sun might harden this pitch later on, and one England batter who likes pace and bounce is Dawid Malan, reckons Michael Atherton.

Quinton de Kock(w), Reeza Hendricks, Rassie van der Dussen, Aiden Markram(c), Heinrich Klaasen, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Gerald Coetzee, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi
Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Harry Brook, Jos Buttler(w/c), David Willey, Adil Rashid, Gus Atkinson, Mark Wood, Reece Topley
Bavuma is ill, so Reeza comes in. Nice opportunity for him. Might be little bit in it during the powerplay. Sort of motivates you a bit. Not focussing too much on it. It's about reaching to those standards. Reeza has been knocking on the door for a while, he comes in. It's a fantastic opportunity for him.
We are going to bowl first. Generally a good ground for chasing, that's the reason behind it. It's not about looking back, need to look forward. Need to be at our best. Stokes comes in, Willey and Atkinson come in for Woakes and Curran. This wicket favours pace, so we are focussing on that. Everyone is eager to get going. Need to be true to ourselves. We need to play our brand of cricket.
Both England and South Africa come into this game on the back of debilitating defeats.
England suffered a 69-run defeat at the hands of Afghanistan in their previous group stage encounter. That defeat sunk them to sixth spot in the points table. The defending champions have just one win and two points from their first three matches. Their semi-final hopes are hanging by a thread at the moment and they will need a win over the Proteas on Saturday to keep their campaign alive for the rest of the group stage.
South Africa, on the other hand, were grounded by the The Netherlands in their last game by a margin of 38 runs. Before that defeat, the Proteas were establishing their credentials as one of the top nations in the tournament.
The Wankhede Stadium is known for being a batter’s paradise. And with both teams loaded with big-hitters, expect a mouth-watering contest.
"Our biggest misdemeanour as batters is that we took the negative energy from the field, the momentum that the Netherlands guys had achieved at the end of their innings, into our batting."
