England vs Australia 2nd Ashes Test Day 5 Highlights: Australia beat England by 43 runs and go 2-0 up

James Anderson and Josh Tongue have survived another over here. Starc has been bowling some brutal bouncers one of which hit the helmet of the Anderson and caused a delay. It is only matter of team before Australia seal the Test match.

Since the wicket of Ben Stokes both Robinson and Broad have departed. This looks like a procession now and seems like there is only one winner here. Jimmy Anderson has walked into the middle with 69 runs more to get. For all the good things that have come out for England today, they are going to go 2-0 down the series and which is hard to come back from for any team. It seems like England needs to rejig their combination a bit and think about other things going forward. After 74.3 overs England 303/9

Josh Hazelwood picks up Ben Stokes. Stunning innings from Stokes where you were standing and applaud the genius of England's skipper. It has been a marvellous inning. A knock which will be remembered for a long time. He might have not completed the job here but has got them as close as possible. The onus is on the remaining batters to do the job from here on. The game has come to a standstill here. Both teams seem like they are going back into their shells. Ben Stokes has stopped to take on the bowling and Pat Cummins seem to be happy with having fielders on the boundary and not to attack. Things have slowed down considerably here for the last 10-15 minutes all the action has calmed down and the crowd seem to be calmer. It may be not a bad ploy for Cummins to bring in his off-spinner Travis Head for a small spell here and ask Broad to take on him which might create an opportunity likewise for Stokes. Cameron Green gets in a maiden and Mitchell Starc will have an entire over to bowl to Stuart Broad. This is Australia's opportunity to turn this game around. Tactics have been semi-decent from Aussies post-lunch but now is the moment when Australia can come back right back into the game. Broad on the other hand needs to manage this over as there may be some bouncers and fierce yorkers. This is tense stuff here. Cummins has finally brought Mitchell Starc into the attack and he bowled a semi-decent over. For all the momentum with the England talk things have slowed down significantly in the last 10-15 minutes. All the fielders have been put on the boundary while Stokes is on strike and the bouncer tactic continues to Stuart Broad. Credit must be given to Broad for how he hung around despite being peppered by the bowlers. England now has to be a bit care full as Starc has a lethal yorker up his sleeve. This has been poor from Pat Cummins. The bowlers have been continuing to bowl short ones despite they have been not working. The wicket has been fairly slow and the ball has not been bouncing much but they continue to use it. The Aussies haven't brought Starc into the attack since the first hour of the morning session and neither are they willing to use off-spin of Travis Head it has been all bouncers and pretty one-dimensional. They now need to bring in Starc and see if the ball is reversing.  After 63.2 overs England 277/6

England is doing it again it is not at all looking good for Australia at the moment their body language has changed drastically. Pat Cummins is looking clueless. The England dressing room is all smiling and Australia can feel the Headingley demons again. Australia continues to persist with the short-pitch bowling which Ricky Ponting is bashing them for bowling. They have been pretty one-dimensional here and it is hard to understand Cummins's tactics of not using Mitchell Starc yet. After 62 overs England 276/6

It has been a terrific start to the afternoon session. Stokes opened the session with a maximum and then he gave a simple catch to Steve Smith which he dropped at the fine leg. The Australian seamers seem to be a bit shell-shocked at the moment. It seems like Headingley all over again here at the Lords.  Australia similar to four years ago seems like they have no idea of what to do now with a bowler. Stokes is hitting the bowlers all over the park. The crowd is into it. It is Test cricket at its very best. After 59.3 overs England 263/6

What a session we had folks! This is Test cricket at its very best. We had a bit of everything in the session. It started properly with a bit of old-fashioned morning session and after Duckett's wicket a bit of Bairstow controversy and then Stokes's onslaught. The momentum is certainly with England now and it looks like Australia needed this lunch break very badly. Ben Stokes has switched on Bazzball mode and there has been plenty of chitchat between Stuart Broad and the Australian fielders. The Australian bowlers are being put under pressure Stokes is going after every ball he probably is looking at the quality of English batters to follow and realised he has to start going from here on and he is doing it. Alex Carey runs out Jonny Bairstow, It is a controversial dismissal, to say the least. Bairstow walked out of the crease right after Carey took the ball. The Australian wicket-keeper hit the stumps and Bairstow was out of his crease and was deemed out by third umpire. It seems like Bairstow was going out casually unaware of the ball being not dead. The crowd has been booing the Australian team ever since. Broad has walked into the middle and he is being greeted by some nasty bouncers things are on edge here at the moment. It has been a feature in this new England iteration to chase scores on the final day. However, they have been in a bit of a pickle last evening when Cummins and Starc were picking wickets for fun. But there seems to be a change in the tide today morning. They say cometh the hour cometh the man and the man has been Stokes for England for the last few years in crunch moments like today. The closer this game goes and Stokes will stay in the crease Australia's Headingley wounds start to open up again. And the English skipper will be confident that he will close this game down. Since the inception of Bazzball, it has been Bairstow who walked the walk and showed the way for the youngsters' last English summer against New Zealand his innings on the final day took England to unbelievable victories and from there on there has been no stopping of this juggernaut. However, Australia however, has posed sterner challengers so far in the series and today is the day when England has to stamp their authority and show their system does work against quality opposition in crunch moments. Bairstow has started positively here but there is still a long way to go. After 49.2 overs England 190/5

Ben Duckett falls to Josh Hazelwood's bouncer. The tactic finally worked for Australia as Duckett tried to pull the ball fine and gets the glove and a brilliant catch from Alex Carey. Huge wicket for Australia's much-needed breakthrough and they are right back into the game and are on top. Bairstow has come into the middle. This is a huge moment in this game. If Australia can pick a wicket here they will be into England's long tail and on the other hand if Bairstow bats for a substantial period of time he will put Aussie bowlers under a lot of pressure.  After 47.1 overs England 184/5

It has been England's phase there is no doubt about it. Apart from a few moments when Starc pitched it up and got the ball to reverse the pair of Stokes and Duckett have looked unphased so far. Australia have been too predictable with the short ball strategy and they have to come up with a different plan. England has been excellent on chasing on final days in the last 12 months the way things have gone so far this morning and with the dangerous man Bairstow yet to looks like we have a cracking game on our hands and might be in for another historic chase. Australia continues to bowl the bouncers while the surface has been offering nothing and at the moment it seems like it is getting too predictable for the batters. Ben Duckett has been setting himself up for these deliveries. Not only those bouncers are difficult to bowl but the take out a lot of energy from the bowlers how much of a risk is Cummins taking in the absence of Nathan Lyon to keep bowling his front-line bowlers' bumpers only time will tell. At the moment the bumper tactic hasn't bore any fruits as this partnership between Stokes and Duckett continue to grow and is turning ominous. After 43.1 overs England 160/4

Ben Stokes has been looking good. Nothing extravagant this has been proper Test match batting. Apart from a few iffy moments, he looked comfortable today morning so far. The onus is on him to take this chase as deep as possible for England to have a chance. Australia on the other are bringing in the bowling changes. They have made a double change by bringing in both Cameron Green and Josh Hazelwood. With two left-handers in the middle we might see Travis Head too soon come to bowl his off-breaks. Mitchell Starc is now started to reverse the ball and he is looking lethal. He bowled a few yorkers to Ben Stokes which he looked uncomfortable against. He was given out LBW by the onfield umpire however, he reviewed the decision and the replay showed he got an edge on it. It is unlike Starc to bowl long spells however, if there is a day today might be it. This might be the partnership which may cause Australia a lot of trouble down the line in the day. On the other hand, Cummins continues to keep the batter guessing by mixing shorter ones and fuller ones. After 39.1 overs England 148/4

The Australian skipper is looking in the zone with his lines and lengths this morning. Despite resorting to short-ball tactics unlike Mitchell Starc who has been a bit predictable Cummins has mixed it up nicely and kept the batters guessing. 30 minutes have gone by the wicket seems to have nothing in it for either of the seamers. They might be looking to get Josh Hazelwood soon into the attack and will be interesting to see if he too will be asked to bounce people out or stick to his strengths which is bowling line and length. The gutsy left-hander is not shying away from taking on the short balls from the Aussies. He milked Starc for a few boundaries whilst he was struggling to get the length of the bumper right. Whilst Cummins has been hitting more of hard lengths at the moment than going for out-and-out bumpers which seem to be troubling Duckett. On the other end, Ben Stokes has been looking solid as a wall until he is in the middle of England and will believe no matter how tough the situation is they will have a chance. Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins have taken the ball for Australia and rightly so as they have been the pick of the bowlers last evening. The field suggests that the Aussies would stick to the bouncer strategy however, the pitch seems to have slowed down significantly. Ben Duckett and Ben Stokes on the other hand have looked comfortable so far in the first two overs. There has been nothing extravagant of the surface or of the ball. The left-handers would be looking to build a partnership in this morning session and take it from there. After 33.2 overs England 123/4

Nathan Lyon Slammed Kevin Pieterson for saying that Australia sent him to bat in a hope that they could get a concussion substitute if the off-spinner is hit by the bouncer.

Lyon said he found this argument very absurd as he has lost one of his friend due to being hit on the head. Lyon, who was on the field when Phillip Hughes was fatally killed by a bouncer at the SCG in 2014.

The ball is held in the hand or hands of a fielder, even if the hand holding the ball is touching the ground, or is hugged to the body, or lodges in the external protective equipment worn by a fielder, or lodges accidentally in a fielder’s clothing.

“I’m sorry that’s the biggest load of rubbish I’ve ever seen. That ball is under control,” McGrath said on BBC’s Test Match Special. Third umpire Marais Erasmus ruled that after Starc took the catch to dismiss Ben Duckett for 50 he slid the ball along the ground. “I’ve seen everything this game has to offer. If that is not out then every other catch that’s ever been taken should not be out,” McGrath continued. “That is a disgrace.”

Earlier, England, probably going against Bazball principles, enforced a holding pattern when Khawaja and Smith threatened to take the game completely out of their range. The short-ball barrage, with fielders on the boundary, not only kept the scoring down but also got wickets when the batsmen tried to break the shackles. They would describe it as a wicket-taking tactic and cite how the day unfolded, but it made for some predictable fare and didn’t provide an entertaining spectacle – as the batsmen were often unwilling or unable to take the short ball on – which they claim is their primary goal.

Ben Duckett, who narrowly missed a hundred in the first innings, and skipper Ben Stokes then got some semblance of control. There was some late drama when Duckett was ‘caught’ by Starc at the fine leg boundary, only for the third umpire to adjudicate that the ball was grounded as he completed the grab.

Then Pat Cummins produced an over from hell to get rid of Joe Root and Harry Brook. Root got a brute that climbed on him off a length and he could only fend it to David Warner at slip. There has been a lot of talk about Brook’s prowess against short-pitched bowling after how he dealt with that type of attack in the first innings and he would have been expecting much of the same again. But after surviving a caught-and-bowled chance, he was squared up by a beauty that moved away up the slope to beat his outside edge and crash into off-stump.

But it was with the new ball that the left-arm paceman broke the game open. If Zak Crawley was strangled down the leg-side with a misdirected in-swinger, the delivery that castled Ollie Pope was the manifestation of everything that Starc is about. The over-the-wicket pacy delivery pitched full at the perfect spot outside off-stump and moved in devilishly to knock out middle stump as Pope’s head fell over.

Ending the day at 114/4, England need another 257 on the final day to level the rubber and set up another enthralling Ashes series. If Australia get the six wickets they need on Sunday, it could very well be job done in the quest of a first Test series win in England since 2001.

Though England has lost four wickets chasing a massive 371 Headingley knock from Ben Stokes in 2019 will be fresh in the mind of Aussies. Stokes along with Ben Duckett fought hard last evening. Australian bowlers especially Mitchell Starc were on a rampage with his swing and Australia still are the favourites to win the game however, with Nathan Lyon unable to bowl England has a slight chance to make history and in Bazzball era they have been phenomenal chasing on final days.
