England and Australia have failed to have a traditional post-series drink after the fifth and final Test of the Ashes at Oval.
Foxsports.com.au revealed that a source close to the Australians said the English had no desire to do so.
“We don’t really care, we’ve got the urn, but after a hard-fought series, it is pretty pathetic,” the source reportedly said.
“Talk about the spirit of cricket.”
English coach Brendon McCullum previously said earlier in the series that they didn’t want to have a beer with the Aussies, in the wake of the Jonny Bairstow stumping at Lord’s.
“I can’t imagine we’ll be having a beer with them any time soon,” England coach Brendon McCullum has said.
However, Sydney Morning Herald has quoted an England team spokesman saying it was just a misunderstanding.
“After the media commitments at the end of the Test, both teams had their families and friends celebrating and reminiscing in the respective dressing rooms. That lasted quite a long period,” the spokesman said.
“After the formal proceedings we were going to invite Australia in for a drink and they had left.
“It’s a great shame that a drink wasn’t shared and the opportunity of looking back on an epic series.”
“We then did our end of Test wrap up, which included a number of presentations to our retired players and staff.
The Australians, who still haven’t won an Ashes series in England since 2001 but will return Down Under with the urn.
