The sports working committee of the Delhi and District Cricket Association has decided to propose the name of Vijay Dahiya as coach and Gautam Gambhir as skipper. This on a day when Ajay Jadeja, named as coach by three government nominees and approved by the executive committee, had overseen the practice of the Delhi team.

On Friday, the Vinod Tihara faction, which won a clear majority to form the association’s sports working committee, held its first meeting at the Ferozeshah Kotla. During the meeting, Tihara was named as the convener and Naresh Sharma to be his deputy.

The committee’s co-convener Sharma said that the sports committee will meet on Sunday afternoon.

“We will be finalising a proposal in which we will name the selection committee members for various age groups of the DDCA as well as for the senior team. This will be forwarded to the executive committee for approval,” Sharma said.

With regard to the proposal to push for Dahiya as the coach, Sharma asked, “Why should we not go ahead with Vijay Dahiya as the chief coach this season too? He alongside Gambhir had helped Delhi reach quarterfinals of both the Ranji Trophy and the Vijay Merchant Trophy last year.

“We don’t see any reason to not continue with the same set up. We have decided to only propose Dahiya’s name as chief coach and Gambhir as Delhi captain for this season as well.”

When asked about Jadeja’s presence at the Delhi nets, Sharma said, “The executive committee has done this (appointing Jadeja) to silence the matter (with regard to no decision being taken). But until unless the sports committee decides on the proposal, nothing is permanent.”

With regard to the composition of the selection committee, Sharma signaled that there would be changes. “Never have we had selection committees consisting of just three people. We will make sure each committee comprises of five selectors. But yes, the names that have been given by the executive committee will definitely be considered,” Sharma said.
