Team is higher than individuals: India coach Anil Kumble to Ravi Shastri

Indian cricket team’s new head coach Anil Kumble interacted with media for the first time since been appointed to the position by BCCI last week.

Kumble was speaking in Bangalore were the India team will be attending the preparatory camp before its tour to West Indies for four Tests, the first of which starts July 21. Excerpts:

On Ravi Shastri’s controversy

I was the first one to call Ravi. It’s not about Ravi or Kumble but it is about the team. I told him the same”

On the preparatory camp

We are looking to maximise the outdoor nets sessions. The morning session will start at 9 am and the afternoon session will start at 2 pm

On the West Indies tour

We have a good team. Virat Kohli, Murali Vijay, Amit Mishra and Ishant have played there before. Some of the players have been on the ‘A’ tours. We have experience. I will also bring experience from my playing days

On his one-year coaching tenure

I haven’t thought about how long I would be the coach. I never thought like that when I was captain. It is a journey

On the selection process

Hopefully I will succeed in telling people they are always part of it. Dropping someone doesn’t mean he is out

On the road ahead

I had a talk with MS Dhoni at length after he returned from Zimbabwe. I also had word with Virat Kohli and we discussed the roadmap ahead and I am looking forward to working with them

On his first day as coach

Today was just a welcome meeting. I told them I was privileged to be part of the Indian dressing room again. The next five-six days will be more of the welcoming and work

On the bowling coach

I am looking to get close to the bowlers right now as I think I can do it. We are open to options but a bowling coach to West Indies looks difficult. Right now, I think I can do it

On Test cricket

We are doing whatever to popularsise Test cricket and BCCI has announced 17 Tests in the next one year so it’s evident

On the proposed new ODI structure

I am aware of that but it is too early to comment. I am aware of everything

On the pressure of being an Indian coach

I know the responsibilities of the being an Indian coach. The expectations as well. The responsibilities and expectations are there and I know them

On the decision making within the team

The captain will take the on field calls. I am there to just help. I will only assist him and bring the experience
