"From the players' point of view and where the teams are placed, it was better suited not to take the field when it is not safe to play. Don't want an injury at this stage," Kohli says.
"It's been unfortunate but that's the way it is. The groundstaff did their best but the weather 48 hours prior to today made it really difficult for them. I am not sure what the forecast is but hopefully, the weather is better for Sunday," is the word from the umpires.

The umpires are set for ONE MORE inspection at 7.30 PM. Could this one be the last one for the day? We all thought Virat Kohli and Kane Williamson would be the two who would draw the most eyeballs today. But no, the two men in the eye of the storm, so to speak, have been Marais Erasmus and Paul Reiffel. And here they come out again for the umpteenth time today.
The rain has now stopped but the covers have been kept on. The umpires were seen having a word with the groundsmen before walking off last time. As for the groundsmen, they are not very intent on drying the outfield. Which could be a sign that getting the outfield ready for action in another hour will not be possible. Will we have an announcement of the match being called off in another 10 minutes? Or might we have a T20 match yet? Fingers crossed.
Another inspection will be carried out at 7.30 PM IST! That's the word from the umpires.

Hope is a precious thing on a day like today. Only some at Trent Bridge are holding on to it though, the evidence of the rain pouring down not providing a very happy picture.
Maybe it's time to begin our countdown for a washout. Two more hours till we give up all hope, but the picture is bleak right now.

One positive to take from this rain for both the teams is that both of them can continue their unbeaten streaks. These two are the only two teams in the tournament to not have lost a single game so far.
Seems like this is the heaviest the rain has been all day.
"Very dark now. Huge cloud. This is proper rain. Think both teams will stay unbeaten now," says Harsha Bhogle. Seems like rain could have the last laugh today after all.
No cricket has been possible so far, but the rains have put on a game of their own. With minutes left for the 6 PM inspection, the clouds open up again! And it's dark. People can be seen making their way out of the uncovered parts of the stands. Some sections of the crowd still as enthusiastic as ever of course, they're playing the drums and conches. Not a positive picture to present from the middle of the ground though.
Dinesh Karthik is dealing with the rain delay better than most of us are, with a wide grin. Next inspection in 10 minutes. The covers have come off again.
No glimmer of hope in Nottingham yet
For those fans in New Zealand who are watching on television, it's midnight now and they don't even know if their team is going to play today.
This has been the story of this World Cup so far. Rain goes away, hope glimmers, then rains come down again! So frustrating for everyone!

All eyes on umpires Paul Reiffel and Marais Erasmus at the moment. No official word from them yet, but they might still need some convincing regarding the nature of the outfield.
The umpires are out in the middle with their umbrellas. The players are looking on expectantly from the dressing room balcony. The sky is a bright blue at the moment but there seem to be some problematic soggy patches in the outfield.
Just for the record, if this match is a washout, New Zealand would pull ahead of Australia by one point. A washout would leave India on 5 points, in third place behind Australia and NZ, but ahead of England.
Meanwhile, Iceland are drawing attention to the sunny days in Reykjavik a little to the northwest.

Getting the outfield ready for action will be the challenge for the groundsmen, but the sun is doing its part.

For the record, 8.45 pm IST is the deadline for the match to start, with the game truncated to being a 20-over game. Let's hope for now that we don't have to lose overs.
