Whether you speak English as a first, second or third language, there’s one thing we can agree on — it’s too Eurocentric, and the baseline for ‘cool’ keeps changing. So how about we ground things, and lean into our Indianness? That’s our goal with the Express Mini Crossword: a new daily puzzle made in-house by the editorial team of the Indian Express.

Now crosswords as an idea aren’t new. But one designed exclusively for South Asia? That’s rare. And we want to keep it that way. From politics to culture to that trendy snack you keep eyeing on Instagram, there’s a lot one can unpack in five minutes. Get a taste right here:

Starting from 5.30am, you’ll find a new Mini Crossword every day on our puzzles page. Critical thinking shouldn’t feel like a chore, and we hope the Mini lets you have fun with all the lingo you forgot you knew about. The Mini will be joining Indian Expressexisting bundle of games: the old-school Sheffer crossword, which mimics our newspaper grid; three zesty levels of online sudoku; and our Friday news quiz, made by yours truly. To play any of these games, all you have to do is sign in. We save your progress across all logged-in devices. Each game is also fitted with an auto-checker and letter/word ‘Reveal’ tool, so that you can stay on track.

5 tricks to solve the Mini Crossword

  1. Don’t be a soldier! Crack the easiest words first, as the timer affects your score.
  2. The answer is always in the same tense and singular/plural form as the clue.
  3. Tap on the grid to shift between the Across or Down words you want to fill in.
  4. Clues with a ‘?’ at the end indicate wordplay. For example, the clue ‘Swear words?’ can mean ‘OATHS’.
  5. Use ‘Play Together’ to solve the crossword live with a friend.
