SC slams Modi govt for ‘spurious case’ against activist Teesta

The court says it is a “100 per cent spurious case to victimise'' her.

THE Supreme Court today criticised the Gujarat government for initiating criminal proceedings against social activist Teesta Setalvad for her alleged role in the illegal exhumation of bodies of 2002 riot victims, saying it is a “hundred per cent spurious case to victimise” her.

Asking the state to re-consider the move “dispassionately”,a bench of Justices Aftab Alam and Ranjana Desai remarked that the FIR registered by the state in the case may be an attempt to victimise Setalvad, who is known for her activism in the riots cases.

The bench criticised the state government’s conduct for having started investigations against Setalvad in this particular matter, saying it was not worthy of credit.

“This case is hundred per cent spurious. In other cases against the petitioner, there may be something,” the Bench said. The Gujarat government has lodged criminal proceedings against

Setalvad in other riot-related cases also.
