The Maharashtra ATS said it had arrested a man accused in the 2008 Ahmedabad blasts,Mohammed Abrar Babu Khan alias Abrar Shaikh,following an encounter in Aurangabad with an alleged terror module on Monday.
While another member,Khalil Qureshi,was killed,a third,Mohammed Shakir,was injured and taken into custody. The module was allegedly involved in bank robberies in Madhya Pradesh for terror financing.
The leader of the group,Abu Faisal,who was arrested in MP last year,had reportedly told interrogators that his accomplices were operating in Maharashtra.
We got information that this group was active in Aurangabad,Jalna and Buldhana. We believed they were planning similar robberies in Maharashtra. This morning,our Aurangabad unit received a tip-off and a trap was laid, said Maria,adding that a head constable was injured as the module opened fire.
Abrar is wanted in the Ahmedabad blasts. He and Abu Faisal are linked to the Indian Mujahideen. They were part of the Safdar Nagori group of SIMI,and underwent terror training in Kerala, said Maria.
