To boost industrial investment and employment opportunities in Tripura, the government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Patanjali Foods Limited to ramp up palm oil production in the state.
“The Horticulture department’s recent MoU with Patanjali foods Ltd marks a significant milestone in boosting Tripura’s palm oil production. Under the National Mission on Edible Oils and Oil Palm, they’re targeting 1,124 hectares for palm plantation, with an impressive 760 hectares already covered. This initiative is a part of the government’s larger goal to increase oil palm production in the State…,” Chief Minister Manik Saha said in a post on X on Tuesday. Patanjali Foods will also set up a palm processing unit in the state, Saha added.
Ashok Kumar Singh, Northeast Head, Patanjali Foods, visited Saha at his official residence and discussed prospects related to oil palm plantations and their commercialisation in Tripura. The government later claimed this would uplift the socio-economic condition of farmers in the state.
Patanjali Foods Limited said in a press statement that it is looking to start a palm processing unit in Tripura and land acquisition for the project is currently going on. It added that it plans to start a model oil palm nursery in the state and set up model gardens on neem plantations. It further stated that it had started using ginger for intercropping in Tripura.
The company also expressed interest in entering the bamboo and horticultural product market in the state.
Since the incumbent BJP-led government came to power in Tripura in 2018, it has been vocal about inviting investment into agricultural and allied sectors, tourism, and other natural resource-based industries in the state.
