As Uttarakhand continues to reel under the impact of the devastating flash floods, the Ministry of Water Resources has decided to set up an official committee to look into the factors responsible for the disaster and recommend possible solutions for the future.

Union Minister for Water Resources Harish Rawat told The Indian Express that he has instructed the Secretary,Water Resources to constitute a committee that will visit the affected areas and study possible reasons behind the disaster. This is a state subject and we can only supplement with some help. We have decided to constitute a committee to visit the area and study what are the reasons behind the disaster apart from of course natural factors like heavy downpour and cloudburst, Rawat said.

The ministry believes various factors like rivers changing course or encroachment may have also led to the extreme situation. The committee is expected to recommend possible solutions to prevent such disasters. The ministry is likely to look towards the basin approach as a possible flood control measure.
