Suicide: IAF suspends officer

An IAF spokesperson said that Gupta has been suspended under the Air Force Act after he was taken in custody in a case of abatement to suicide.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) on Wednesday suspended Group Captain Amit Gupta after the officer was arrested in connection with the suicide of former IAF officer Anjali Gupta — the first woman officer of the armed forces to be dismissed by a court martial — in Bhopal.

An IAF spokesperson said that Gupta has been suspended under the Air Force Act after he was taken in custody in a case of abatement to suicide.

Family members of Anjali Gupta have alleged that the senior officer was in a live in relationship with her and reneged on his promise to marry her. IAF officers in New Delhi have said that full cooperation would be extended to the police in its investigation and the senior officer would remain under suspension till the case is concluded so that he is available to investigation authorities.

“The officer, who is currently posted at Nagpur air base, has been suspended under the Air Force Act after he was arrested and taken into judicial custody by the local police authorities in Bhopal,” IAF officials said here.
