The All Assam Students Union (AASU) may claim to be a non-political students body, but every time there is an election,it plays a role routinely asking the people to vote against the Congress. And this time is no exception.
The students body published an advertisement in all leading newspapers of Assam on Tuesday, criticising the Congress and asking people to vote it out of power.
All that the Congress government headed by Tarun Gogoi did in the past 10 years is to ridicule and abuse the people of Assam irrespective of caste, creed, religion and language, the advertisement said.
It kept telling lies in the name of development. A major chunk of development funds have been siphoned off. The people can no longer bear this. It is time to vote the Congress out of power, the advertisement said.
The student body, which had led a five-year agitation against Bangladeshi infiltration from 1979 to 1985,and whose leaders later formed the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP),however, did not name any particular party that the people should vote for. But it gave enough hints that the AASU favoured the AGP.
The people of Assam should put a full stop to the ridicule and abuse meted out to them by the Congress party. Nobody should tolerate a party that does not know how to respect the peoples wishes. It is time for the people of Assam to assert their rights. It is now time to elect persons who have respect for the indigenous people, who love Assam, who do not go mad over votes of Bangladeshi infiltrators and who have a strong stand against corruption, the AASU advertisement, issued by its president Sankar Prasad Roy and general secretary Tapan Kumar Gogoi said.
The AASU particularly referred to the Congress governments alleged lackadaisical attitude towards implementation of the Assam Accord and said Tarun Gogoi did this despite certain decisions taken at a tripartite discussion attended by none other than the prime minister.
The Congress has betrayed the people in implementation of the Assam Accord. The number of Bangladeshi infiltrators continues to rise. Updating of the National Register of Citizens to weed out the infiltrators has been turned into a farce by giving it a communal colour, it said.
Referring the education sector, the AASU advertisement said accused the Congress government of pushing the students into a dark future.
While students have had to do without textbooks for most parts of the year, most schools do not have science and maths teachers. Over 30,000 posts of teachers have been lying vacant. Colleges are running hardly 100 days class a year, it said.
