The government has changed the law officer representing the CBI in the Supreme Court in the disproportionate assets case against Mulayam Singh Yadav and his family members.
Additional Solicitor General Gopal Subramaniam, who had been representing the CBI in the case,is learnt to have been replaced by Mohan Parasaran, also an Additional Solicitor General.
While Parasaran will be arguing on behalf of the CBI,Solicitor General Goolam E Vahanvati will appear for the government along with other counsel when the matter comes up for hearing tomorrow before a bench headed by Justice Altamas Kabir.
While the move to change the law officer representing the CBI has raised questions,it is learnt that the Samajwadi Party was upset with the way its case was presented during the January 6 hearing.
The bench, while repeatedly questioning the CBI counsel, had pulled up the agency over its application to withdraw a request for placing the investigation report before the court and not the government.
You (CBI) are an autonomous organisation. You are an independent probe agency where you are not under any political control. You are under your own control, the bench reminded the CBI counsel.
