West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday hit back at Union Home Minister P Chidambaram asking him to explain what prompted him to quote incorrect figures on political violence in the state.

Chidambaram had said on Thursday: “Political killings are taking place in West Bengal. This is not a healthy sign for democracy.”

Mamata said she has written to the Home Minister regarding his comment. “What prompted him to say this?” she asked. “The facts are incorrect. From where did he get these figures?”

State Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee had earlier said the West Bengal government would send a written rejoinder to the Centre for such comments.

Mukherjee observed that the Congress was trying to mount pressure on Trinamool ahead of the Presidential poll. He also called Chidambaram’s remarks “unethical” since “law and order is a state subject”.

Leader of Opposition Surjyakanta Mishra said though the Left Front is against Centre’s intervention into any state subject, the law and order situation in Bengal is deteriorating rapidly.
