Gunbattle along LoC nears end,four more ‘militants’ killed in Keran sector

On Friday,three were killed in an alleged similar attempt in the sector,thus taking the toll to seven in the past two days.

On Saturday,the men were killed at Fateh Gali,a mountainous pass 25 km from the Shala Batu village of Keran,where for the past 13 days the Army has been trying to drive away a group of armed militants. It was believed that the stand-off was nearing an end as there had been no exchange of fire for some time between the two sides.

“A group of militants was spotted near Fateh Gali. When they were challenged,they opened fire. Four militants were killed in the gunfight,” Defence Spokesperson N C Vij said. “We have recovered the bodies. Search for other possible infiltrators is on.”

Vij said the infiltrators tried to sneak in during the night of October 4-5 and that they had recovered six automatic rifles,four pistols and some “war-like” ammunition from them.

On Friday,the Army claimed to have killed three militants at Gujjar Tar,in the frontier district of Kupwara.

As in Poonch,Army patrol was the likely target in Keran

The operation in the Keran sector began following alleged infiltration by a group of 30 to 40 heavily armed militants at Shala Batu village last month.

On Wednesday,General Officer Commanding (GoC),15 Corps,Lt General Gurmit Singh claimed that 10-12 infiltrators had been killed. However,he could not explain the absence of bodies or weapons.
