Karnataka Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda officially resigned on Wednesday and Governor H R Bhardwaj called upon the newly elected BJP legislature party leader Jagadish Shettar to take over as the third chief minister of the first BJP government in southern India.
In exercise of the powers conferred under Article 164(1) of the Constitution of India,the Governor has accepted the resignation of the Council of Ministers of Chief Minister D V Sadananda Gowda with immediate effect and appointed Jagadish Shettar as Chief Minister…, a press communique said.
Shettar is tentatively scheduled to be sworn in at noon on Thursday. He flew to New Delhi along with the state party chief K S Eshwarappa Wednesday evening to thrash out the formalities of the new cabinet.
BJP sources said the entire cabinet of 33 ministers is likely to be sworn in Thursday if cleared by the party high command. Most of the 24 ministers from the Gowda cabinet would continue while one or two who are facing investigations like forest minister C P Yogeshwar could be dropped,sources said. Ten fresh faces are expected.
The issue of two deputy chief ministers Eshwarappa and R Ashok remained unresolved and more clarity would emerge only after meetings with the high command,sources said.
Gowdas resignation was marked by drama. Initially slated to go on a padayatra to submit his resignation to the Governor,he was forced to use his car after supporters prevented him from walking.
