Ex-prince Paras arrested for shooting at Koirala kin

Former crown prince Paras Shah was arrested Tuesday for having shot at the son-in-law of Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala.

Former crown prince Paras Shah was arrested Tuesday for having shot at the son-in-law of Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala on Saturday. He was charged with attempt to murder.

The police said Paras was taken into custody by Kaski district police in Pokhara,180 km from the capital. The former prince, who was staying at a hotel with his friends, admitted to having shot in the air in Chitwan on Saturday night. He said his actions were triggered by contemptuous remarks made against him,the institution of Monarchy and Nepal by Ruben Chowdhary, the Bangladeshi son-in-law of Koirala, and an Indian national.

According to the police,Paras is being interrogated by two senior police officers in Pokhara. However,he has been insisting that a legal adviser be present. The police will reportedly take him to Chitwan after the interrogation is over.

Chowdhary claimed that Paras first aimed the revolver at his head and then shot in the air. Official sources have said that Paras does not have the license for the revolver that he used, and most likely he would be tried under the Arms Act.
