Bengal wants to shift Aftab Ansari to Tihar

A court in Kolkata had awarded him capital punishment.

The West Bengal Home department is considering a proposal to file a petition before the Tis Hazari court in Delhi seeking permission to keep gangster Aftab Ansari in Tihar Jail because of security concerns.

Ansari, convicted of masterminding the attack on the American consulate office in Kolkata on January 22,2002,is lodged at the Alipore central correctional home at present. A court in Kolkata had awarded him capital punishment.

“Recently,Kolkata Police Commissioner R K Pachnanda wrote to State Home Secretary G D Gautama seeking that Ansari be shifted to Tihar Jail. The police chief termed Ansari as a ‘high-risk’ prisoner,” said a senior Home department official.

He added that since several cases were lodged against Ansari in other states,he is often taken to the different courts there.

In the last six months,Ansari was produced in courts outside Bengal at least six times, said a jail department official.

Ansari is also often taken to Delhi’s Tis Hazari court by flight.

“A lot of risk is involved in taking Ansari to Tis Hazari court and a lot of money is spent,” said an official.
