Ahead of the scheduled reopening of Aligarh Muslim University on Friday,38 students have been suspended in connection with the April 29 violence that had led to the varsity’s closure.
“Prima facie case has been established against these students for having committed acts of misconduct and indiscipline during the incidents of violence which took place on April 29,” university proctor Mujahid Beg said in his written report.
The AMU Students’ Union described the suspension as unwarranted and said such a decision should have only been taken after a due enquiry.
Meanwhile,the AMU Teachers’ Association which is staging a dharna near the Vice Chancellor’s residence in protest against closure of the university appears to have softened its stand.
“Since the University authorities have agreed to our demand to prepone the reopening of the University and also to provide accommodation to all internal students appearing in the entrance tests,we have decided to take back our decision to boycott invigilating duties during admission tests and annual examinations,” secretary of AMU Teachers’ Association Mustafa Zaidi said.
Zaidi said that the decision was taken “in broader interest of this institution”.
“We will,however,intensify our protest for the removal of the university proctor Beg because he should be accountable for the violent incidents which took place last month,” he alleged.
The AMU Teachers’ Association would meet Vice Chancellor P K Abdul Azis tomorrow to review the situation and press for removal of proctor.
